War Heart

"Now wait a second," Alex grumbles still half asleep. Dylan stops speaking so Alex can continue.
"I missed the first part. So there are all these girls and they are trying to do what exactly?" He questions. I sigh, it pays to pay attention.
"There are only 4 girls, Nala the red headed bandit, Kara the fighter, black hair comes from Kilren where there are orange dyes, Ali the sword expert who was Dylan's best friend and Bella the leader with the unique ability to order people things and they have to do it. The four of them are trying to defeat Riley and his mutants because he somehow built a mind control system," I sum up for him. He takes in the information and slowly nods.
"So the red head, the fighter, the sword expert and the leader are going up against a vampire with a wicked talent to cause trouble," Alex shortens my summary. I frown at him.

16. Chapter 11 (Dylan)

I study Ali's unforgiving expression which fills me with anger.
"Fine," I snap as I turn my back to them and walk in the direction Bella went. As soon as I hit her waves of anger mine immediately fades. I don't even get within three horse lengths of her before she holds up her hand for me to stop. Her emotions drop off the radar and I am once again filled with the odd sense of emptiness. I hate it.
"I know how you did it," she says and instead of trying to focus on her emotions, which are making me nauseous, I focus on my surroundings instead. My second talent is one I value almost as much as my first. I can sense my surroundings the same way I can feel emotions. It's wonderful except when someone's injured. Then I feel their pain.
"You have two talents," she states and I'm snapped out of my thoughts.
"You can deal with emotions. You kept my emotions pinned on escaping so I wouldn't kill you while you cut the ropes from my arms. You sensed my approach and that's how you escaped my dagger. You played me to your emotions and you changed them to love when I was going to kill you. You're a liar and you cheated me. But I can't kill you because you'll fight until your heart stops both with your talents and your sword," she explains and I swallow hard. I realize that everything she's said is true.
"I'm not afraid of death. With the line of work I'm in I can't be," I tell her quietly and she stays silent. I pick up on her indecisiveness and I watch her intently, waiting for her to do something. She turns to face me and I catch a faint hint of playfulness in her emotions.
"And what line of work would that be exactly," she asks with one eyebrow raised and a smirk on her lips. I press my lips together in attempt to hide my smile and answer without hesitation.
"Yours," I answer her and she closes her eyes. A sigh escapes her lips and my smile is wiped off my face.
"That's the problem," she says and I can tell what's happening. I study her face closely. Her lips are thin but not in a bad way. Her eyebrows arch high and that would give her eyes a laughing look if they weren't so deadly. The deep sea blue color of her eyes are icy but if you can look past it you see everything. I see her past, her emotions, her pain.
"Look, I may not trust you, I may not even like you, I can't even promise I won't come back to kill you but you saved my life so now I'm returning the favor. I can't let you come with us. This is me saving your life," she ends and I close my eyes trying to remember every detail of her face. I've found that although I originally went after her because of her beauty I really do like her. Even though she tried to kill me. Twice.
"I'm sorry I have to do this," she tells me sincerely. Her emotions fade and it's replaced by a hardness.
"Sometimes surrender means giving up trying to understand and becoming comfortable with not knowing. I don't know much about you. Goodness, I don't even know the first thing about you but I do know that you're not dumb. I know that I was wrong to cheat you and in cheating you I've realized that you must've trusted me. Even if it was just a little. You trusted me and I've realized that that's all I ever wanted from you. So in return I'll trust you," I give her an explanation to her emotionless state. For a split second I see her falter and I believe, for a second, that I almost have her. She raises her head and her moments ago friendly eyes are replaced with the icy deadly ones I've come to know. I lower my head in submission. Her emotions are gone and I take a step back feeling empty again.
"Leave. And 'don't' come back," she orders and before I get a chance to say anything my feet automatically turn and suddenly I'm walking away. I manage to look back and I find Bella watching me leave. As soon as she sees my eyes she looks away and walks back toward the others.
