9. Chapter 9

“Where’s Kathryn?” Ivy asks.

“She’s talking to Mr. Cross. She’s trying to get you out of a detention.” Damon says. Damon, Petra, Jasper and Ivy are all standing together. They are waiting for Kathryn.

“Thank you, sir. I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.” Kathryn says. She smiles at the ground. When she looks up at us she is frowning again. she never can be happy can she.

“So what’s the verdict?” Damon asks. Kathryn looks at Ivy and gives a kind of half laugh.

“You’re out of a detention this time but if it happens again you’ll have to do something worse than scrubbing headstones.” She says. Then, she actually starts laughing.

“What is so funny?” Ivy asks. Now everyone in the circle except for Ivy is laughing so hard that they’re crying.

“Oh. We were just imagining you in the detention that’s worse than scrubbing headstones and we thought it would be hilarious.” Damon says.

“What’s worse than scrubbing headstones?” Ivy asks.

“Do you really want to know?” Kathryn asks. Ivy nods her head. “Religion class. They make you sit in a room with no windows and force you to read books about heaven and hell and they don’t let you out until you really believe that both places actually exist. I had to pretend so that I didn’t look like a freak to all of the humans. I had to read a book that I wrote about my life and it made me want to cry.” Kathryn says. “It was incredibly frustrating. Especially since I couldn’t just stand up and be all like hey I actually lived in Hell so yeah I know it’s as real as everything else.” She finishes. Ivy realizes how this is worse than scrubbing the headstones. Especially for Kathryn. It was probably worse than death to sit and listen to stuff about religion when the last thing you want to hear about is a war between the light and the dark. Especially when you are Kathryn and it’s going on on the outside as well as on the inside.

“Wow. I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.” Ivy says. she turns and walks into the building.

“It’s a good thing for you that Mr. Cross is being lenient. You would have to be in detention with me.” A voice mumbles behind her.
