A Long Lost Friend

A trip down memory lane leads me to an old best friend, and some new ones too. One Direction fanfiction.

13. No longer mine

Louis's P.O.V

The next morning, I sat up, remembering where I was and who was next to me. I pushed the covers back and quietly got out of the bed, walking towards the bathroom. I stared at myself in the mirror. What had I done? I stared at myself, seeing the marks that Layla had left on my neck last night. I couldn't believe that I had gone back to my ex.

I rationalized with myself. Okay, sure, she was not Kate, and okay, I didn't want any kind of long term relationship with her. I remembered all too well how psychotic she got when we had dated. Checking up on me every night, going through my laundry to look for evidence of cheating, all that kind of thing.

But, Kate obviously didn't want me anymore. She probably had somebody else already. She was way out of my league. And, being with Layla was better that being alone, right? I shook my head. After I had smoothed my hair and used the toilet, I quietly opened the bathroom door to find Layla still sleeping.

I grabbed my shirt and walked out of the room, putting it on. I walked down her stairs and wrote a note on the notepad she kept by the fridge for her, telling her that I was sorry and would call her later explaining everything.

I got outside into the crisp morning air and stuck my hands in my pockets as I prepared to walk the few short blocks home. As I walked, I caught myself thinking about Kate. About the way her hair fell perfectly, and the look in her eyes when she got excited. I realized then what a huge mistake I had made by going back to Layla, even for just one night.

I was so preoccupied when I reached home, that I didn't even register the car sitting outside our house. A car that didn't belong to us, but that was startlingly familiar all the same. I only looked up from my feet when I heard the car door shut, and saw a small figure get out, her long blonde hair hung naturally in loose curls and was tied up in a pony tail. "Kate?" I whispered.

"Hey, Louis." She called, walking towards me. She carried a stuffed bear. "I'm glad you're here, I wanted to talk to you." She looked beautiful in a light bleached leather jacket, a simple black tank top, some tight black skinny jeans and white flat pumps. With a pang I remembered last night with Layla yet again, wincing at the thought.

When she reached me, she held out the bear. "I got this for you, to say sorry. I'm really sorry about the way things ended, and I'd like to try again. I've really missed you these past..." Her voice trailed off as she glanced at the collar of my shirt. Her mouth shut. She reached a hand up to touch my collar and pulled it away from my neck. "Is that lipstick?" She asked, rubbing a mark with her finger. "And... Oh god." Her face crumpled as she caught sight of the marks on my neck.

"Kate, wait." I said as she dropped the bear. It hit the damp ground with a soft thud.

"I'm such an idiot," she whispered, a tear escaping her eyes. She backed away from me slowly.

"Just wait Kate, give me a second to explain!" I said, walking towards her, my voice breaking.

"Just don't," she whispered, tears falling freely down her face now. "Please, just don't." She turned around and walked away from me quickly, towards her car.

"What? So you're allowed to do whatever the hell you like, get other guys, but I have one night with an old girlfriend and you're allowed to flip out?" I yelled at her, raising my hands as I lost my temper.

She turned around, her eyes no longer wounded but furious. "I have not once even thought about anybody else during our time apart." She fumed at me. "I wouldn't mind if you had gotten somebody else, I was a real bitch to you. But for you to go and get a one night stand with your old girlfriend, and then accuse me of doing the same thing is very low." She said, her voice dangerously low. "Goodbye." She said, turning again and reaching her car quickly, before pulling out of the driveway and taking off down the road.

I picked the wet bear up off of the ground, feeling its soft fur slip through my fingers. A note was attacked to it that said "I'm beary sorry." With a heart signed next to it. I buried my face in the bears wet fur, not caring about getting dirty, but smelling her scent that brought back a thousand memories. "I'm sorry," I whispered into the bears chest. "I'm so sorry."

Kate's P.O.V

I drove quickly through the empty streets, trying to see through my tears. I picked up my phone and dialed Niall's number. He picked up on the second ring. "Hey Katy!" He said.

"Niall," I whispered. "Please come over."

"What's wrong?" He asked, his voice urgent.

"Just please come." I said, my voice breaking.

"There in 10," he said, just as I pulled up to the house and stepped out of the car. I ended the call and put my phone in my back pocket.

I collapsed just inside of the door, letting the sobs rock my body. I had lost him. I had let him go and now he was gone. He was no longer mine.
