3. Professor Albus Dumbledore

The next day, I felt really nervous. What if they thought I’d gone mad and send me to a nuthouse? I didn’t know for sure. But I knew it would be something like that.

Mum paced up and down the kitchen, Dad was watching her while drinking coffee and I was sitting upstairs on my own. Then the doorbell rang. I rushed downstairs and jumped onto the sofa as Dad opened the door. I took deep breaths to keep myself calm.

Then Dad walks in with a man with an extremely long white bread and hair. “Hayden this is Professor Albus Dumbledore,” Dad said “He’s going to talk to you about your problem.” When Dad said problem I knew exactly what he meant. Professor Dumbledore sat down opposite me. “You’re here to send me to a nuthouse aren’t you?” I said.

“No, I’m just here to talk to you about why you’re different to other people your age.” Professor Dumbledore reassured me. “Shall we leave you alone then?” Mum asked. “If that would be possible, yes.” Professor Dumbledore said. Then Mum and Dad left the room. “Now Miss Barrett,” Professor Dumbledore continued “Have you ever experienced something you can’t explain?”

“What do you mean?” I asked curiously. “When your angry or scared does something out of the ordinary happen?” Professor Dumbledore asked. I thought for a bit. Nothing really strange happened when I was angry. But then I remembered something. “Well,” I said, “Something does happen when I’m scared.”

“What happens?” Professor Dumbledore asked. I gulped “I don’t want to say. I’ll have a panic attack if I do.”

“Just take deep breaths, Miss Barrett. Then tell me when you’re ready.” Said Professor Dumbledore. I took the deepest breath I could and started to tell him about what happened last year with out having a panic attack.

How is he doing this? I always have a panic attack when I talk or even think about it. “I see.” Professor Dumbledore said, “I’ve got something to tell you, but it might be a bit of a shock.” I nodded vigorously. Professor Dumbledore cleared his throat then said “Hayden Amelia Barrett. You’re a witch.”

“No. I’m not.” I gasped, “You’re just saying that because I’ve gone mad.”

“You haven’t gone mad,” Professor Dumbledore, said calmly “I’ll show you. Hold out your hand.” I shook my head in worry. “Don’t worry I won’t bite.” Professor Dumbledore reassured me. So I did as I was told.

He cupped his hands around mine. I closed my eyes in case something bad happened. But I took a sneaky peek and saw that a small forget-me-not had grown for of the palm of her hand. “How did you do that?” I asked in astonishment. “I didn’t do anything. It was you.” Professor Dumbledore said with a friendly grin.

After that Mum and Dad came back in and Professor Dumbledore explained everything. He handed Mum a letter and left. I was still amazed about the flower act but still didn’t know why I survived last year. So I ran after him. “Professor!” I called. I saw him round a corner but when I rounded the same corner he was gone.
