The getaway

Kathryn and Ari are in college and they've been on the run for years and they just barely manage to escape everytime their father attacks. They find their brother in a high school and Kathryn has a premonition about a little sister. How far are they willing to go to protect their younger siblings?

4. Chapter 3

I decided that we should go out and have a “no stress allowed” day. Kathryn also agreed that we should get to know more about our new brother. Good grief we have a 16 year old on our hands now. Lord help us. And I thought Kathryn was a pain.

“Hey! I heard that.”

“Oh,” I smiled. “I know.”

We found out that Jasper  has another power other than the mind reading between each other that we all have, thanks to our mother. Kathryn tripped and before the ground broke her fall, Jasper caught her, WITH ONE HAND! He was not even struggling. It was like he was holding a spoon. I forgot to mention I had superhuman strength is what he told us later. We are kind of miffed about that. That is such an awesome power. Anyway back to our day. I planned a nice leisurely bike ride across town so that we can get to know our surroundings. Get a taste of California cause we were thinking we just might stay a while.

The bike ride was amazing. Very relaxing, when you are not racing that is. Of course the two youngest want to race each other. Me however, oh no. I am just like to take in what’s around me. Kathryn and Jasper are about half a mile ahead of me. Then I see her suddenly stop. She turns around and screams my name.

“ Ari get out of here run!”

“What?”  Then she got in my head.  There’s trouble approaching. Hurry get away! So I quickly teleport to her and jasper.

“ I told you to get out of here not come to us.”

“Yeah like I was gonna leave you. Come on.” I say as we link hands and we teleport out of there.

In a matter of seconds we land on a beach in Santa Cruz, right in front of a huge group of professional bicyclers doing what seems to be a triathlon.

“Watch out!” Kathryn says, “Ari, Jasper get in the middle.”

“What? Are you crazy? No!” I scream at the wind.

“Just do it, we will be better hidden there.” Kathryn says.

So we get in the middle of the stir crazy professional bikers trying to keep up with them and making sure we stay together.

“Hey maybe we could go there.” Jasper says pointing to an abandoned beach house a mile up the way.

“Sounds good to me.” I say.

“This place is a dump.” Jasper says testing out the couch which then split in two. That sent Kathryn and me into a fit of hysterical laughter.

“Not funny guys.” Jasper pouted as he cleans himself off. “ So what happened back there? Was that him?”

“Yep. He likes to do that. Showing up randomly and all. He needs a new plan or something. He totally sucks at this.”

“ oh yeah.” Kathryn agrees. “ Its actually getting kind of boring.” She laughs.

“ You guys sound like you do this all the time.”

“We do. You could say it’s a hobby.” I snorted.

“Well I think it is time for us to just teach you the ropes while we can.”

“what ropes?’

“You know, like get away plans. Self defense and how to manage your powers,”

“ You think I need self defense?” Jasper says. I nod at Kathryn and give her the look.

“ Hey Jasper, can you grab that box over there, its kind of heavy.”

“Sure, why not….Random.”  She looks at me and gives me the nod. I teleport right behind him and grab him from behind.

“You see, you could totally be dead right now, mr. I do not need self defense. Its all about being aware at all times. Always ready and never let your guard down.”

He grabs me with one arm and dangles me over the floor. “You were saying?”

“ She was just showing you an example. If she was a bad guy and had a knife you would instantly be dead, your strength does not mean anything if you are not on your guard.”

“Yeah.” I say as I teleport back across the room.

“Earlier today you were not on your guard and moments like that is what can cost us.”

“ Okay I get it, you can stop lecturing me now. I am new at all this remember. Give me a break.”

“ We can’t give you a break, that could cost you your life. We do not want to lose you again.” I say and then walk out the room.

“What’s up with that?” Jasper says.

“ Oh she is just emotional about having a baby brother. She doesn’t want to see you hurt. Dude, I’m not going to give you a break until you learn how to keep up your guard, even when you are asleep. So let’s get a move on.”

A couple hours passed. It began to rain outside. The drops pounding against the fragile window as the house moved with the wind. “Hey you guys, dinner is ready!” I say as we gather to sit and eat together like a family. Jasper has accepted this all so well and has added such a great amount of joy to my sister and I. Its such a blessing. He is so warm. Just like a brother.

“Hey sis, can you pass the corn.” Jasper asks. Kathryn slides it down the table.

“Nice.” He jokes.

“So what are the plans for tomorrow Ari?” My sister asks.

“I was thinking that we should do a round of self defense for ALL of us.”I say focusing my stare on Jasper and giving him a slight smile. “ Then maybe a run on the beach and ice cream or something. Our “no stress day” got ruined so I want to make up for that.”

“Sounds like a plan.’

“Jasper, what did you like to do at school?”

“sleep.” He says while shoveling food in his mouth.

“Of course.” I say. “How did you get by with your powers the way you did? Did you ever tell anyone.?”

“No, I kept it to myself. I would have been committed to a loony bin if I came out with it.”

One second Kathryn is sitting at the table talking then she suddenly stops and her eyes get cloud, the way I had seen happen once before. She’s zoned out for a while until I touch her shoulder. Then she starts mumbling something.

“get away from me.” She whispers. Then I realize that she is having one of her premonitions.

“Get away from me! Leave me alone.” She gets a little bit louder but still in a whisper. She pushes me away and runs over to curl up in a corner. She starts crying. I walk over to her and she looks up at me. I see a scared little girl and not my normal sister.

“Kathryn what’s wrong? What do you see?”

“ We have a little sister and she needs our help.”
