Chapter 3: Heroic Never Works Out

‘Forget it, my name is Joey. And that’s all I want to say okay?’ I replied with my muscles shaking.

‘O-Okay, so… Joey? Why are you saving me, I’d just like to know, not everyone saves a stranger…’ She asked.

‘B-Because I work for him, that man who kidnapped you and your family, I work for him. And you know what, I hate it. Sadly, it’s my way of living okay? So stop asking questions…’ I replied.

Her blue eyes looked directly into my eyes full of tears, it was clear she could see the lost little boy inside of me. I wanted to apologize to her, but I didn’t know what words to use. “Sorry, I had to kidnap you because of Ryan forcing me too.” Nope, I’ll just stay quiet, maybe she won’t ask me. Due to time being against me, Kacey wanted to know more. She asked me more questions as I finally made it to the back exit, a tall iron door with a square broken window.

‘T-Thanks Joey, my family’s names are… Are…’ She gasped.

“No… She can’t die, what am I doing?!” I thought to myself in regret. She’d be better off in that car, she wouldn’t have died, and maybe I would have had time to not shoot them and to take them to a nearby hospital or something. It was obvious to why she is dying, there was barely any oxygen in this place. Ryan made sure that all the trees around the street were cut down. Instead of making sure oxygen never existed in this barrier, he had a devious little plan to make poisonous gasses. It was his way of making sure nobody escaped him, which is why the back exit is never used… God damn it!

She was gone, and knowing that she’s gone made me re-think my next steps carefully. “I’ll take her back to the car and say what to the dad? What can I say to any of this family?!” I thought deeply. This was too much, explaining to the kids and the dad that she died. Telling the kids that their Mother Kacey has hit the bucket. No, nope, it’s too damn much to tell them. So what now? What can I do to make sure they don’t find out? What can I do to make sure Ryan doesn’t find out?!

Taking her body back to the car was easy, less work for when she was alive. I realised that there is no option to let them live with knowing that the Mother is dead. So, I did what Ryan wanted me to do. I held the silver pistol in my left red hand, and aimed it at the father wriggling around the back of the seats. As for the kids, I left them for a few minutes extra. We have little time left, and with such a short amount of time what else could I have done? Nothing!

‘S-Sorry Kacey’s husband, S-Sorry…’ I whispered.

Tears rolled down my face, as I pressed the trigger with ease. Lying in front of me is a human with no life. Just a bullet through his head with a mark of blood around his face. There’s no more beauty, and there’s not a single living being around me… Apart from a few kids and a… Oh yeah, I killed him. As bad as this gets, I’ll never fail to remember those I kill. It just makes me thirstier for the blood of taking down a vile human being. Ryan’s attitude will come to an end, and I’m still waiting…

‘H-Hey, I want you to put your hands on your head, and watch the sky turn red.’ Ryan whispered.

‘W-What the heck are you doing?’ I asked with a shocked face.

‘Nothing, I’m just checking on how this simple task is being completed, that’s all…’ Ryan laughed.

‘Yeah… Well it’s going good, I’ve taken care of one or two and I’m just getting ready for the ones remaining.’ I replied with a sigh.

Ryan looked at me with a smirk on his face. Inside, I knew he was proud of me. Ryan had his doubts and I had mine, sadly I had to put mine to aside for Ryan to combust a broken heart. If he had the energy to take down the kids lying in the front of the car, I’d be made the better man. His choice doesn’t depend on him, it depends on the ones around him. Whether or not he takes it with ease, I’ll be taking mine with a sample of blood to make sure my test is complete.

‘One or two huh? Interesting, I’ve seen a corpse in the back. As for the one whose gag was removed, what exactly did you do that for?’ Ryan asked as he stared at me.

I stepped back a few steps away from Ryan’s approaching smirking face. He looked at me with a tear in his left eye. For once I actually felt like Ryan had feelings deep inside. And whether it was true, it was a matter of fact how can I make him feel sad? He has already approved me of being the one who makes him happier? And if this is the truth, then why won’t he listen to a little bit of reason?

‘R-Removed…? I didn’t know, I j-just left her there, and she would must have bitten through it or something…’ I stumbled.

‘Trembling as an option Joey? I like it! I really do… Whether you have the ability to put a smile on my face is starting to reassure me that something is up!’ Ryan aggressively shouted.

“Crap,” I thought to myself with the dried tears on my face. Ryan swung for me with his powerful left fist, I watched it come towards me and glide straight into my face… Slow motion is what I’d call it. Until it collided, I felt like it was lights out for me, kind of wish I could say the same for Heather… I feel against a broken wall with a third bruise forming around my left cheek. “Ouch…”

‘You have a lot of sense to make Joey! And I like how you stared at the power going into your stupid little face.’ Ryan whispered.

‘I-I didn’t know… And you punch me for no fucking reason!’ I shouted.

‘Watch your tone, I really would start to watch your next steps too. I advise you that your little attitude needs to drop, and go sky rocketing into a death pit…’ Ryan continued.

He has some guts, it’s probably what he was thinking. I mean, what human being destroys a colleague? Or for that matter a friend… I get it, Ryan is a scumbag. I knew this already, and I have to face endless torture for a guy I hate so much! Heather better be sorry when I get home tonight, because I’m not living with her anymore unless she tells me why Ryan is still hanging around these streets. He has no business here, he just wants to cause trouble. At least that’s the way I see it…

Before leaving Ryan’s private garage, I had to clean up the blood and the tears rolling down my face. Ryan whispered to me before leaving. “Time is precious, I’ll be seeing you at 5:00 AM tomorrow.” His whisper startled me at first, I can’t believe he wants me to wake up so early. I’ll be half dead by midnight, so what different does it make… Lack of sleep, lack of concentration, I stand no chance against him. Forget it, I’ll have to move town… It’s my only other option if Heather doesn’t mind, then good. However, if she does mind… She better not mind, or else I’m going to do something…

‘Joey… Your home! About time really… Always going the pub for a few extra hours, while your kids are here with me upset. Asking every day, “When’s dad coming home?” and Amy just cries…’ Heather shouted.

‘The p-pub, you think I’ve been going to the pub to miss my family?! Heather, put the kids in bed, I need to talk to you right now!’ I shouted.

Before leaving Heather with a painful message, I had already destroyed a photo frame with a drawing of Amy. It smashed on the ground and startled me and possibly my family. Heather didn’t look too pleased to see me, she had a little bit of redness under her eyeballs. I wondered whether she had been taking anything, and I was hoping that she hadn’t. She wouldn’t bring back a terrible life to our family, she promised me when we were going to get married…

‘J-Joey come up stairs!’ Heather shouted.

‘A-Alright…’ I mumbled.

The house looked untidy, books of World War II stacked all over the pink rug I brought Heather for her birthday gift. Across the room was a bunch of baby dolls with bite marks. Amy might be teething, although I haven’t seen Amy bite anything yesterday. She might just be growing up, who knows…? I stopped watching an untidy house clean its self and headed up the stairs to Heather and our kids who should be fast asleep. I don’t want any of the older ones to hear it…

Our stairway was not too bad, it had some ripped carpet here and there. As for the railing, well it was completely broken. I promised Heather I’d fix it, I just never got around to doing it… Finally, I had made it to the final step, and could see Heather standing in an empty room with her head held down in her hands. She didn’t look too happy, I thought she might be depressed.

‘H-Heather? I’m up now, can we talk now?’ I asked with a deep sigh.

‘S-Sure… Just come on in, and tell me what you need to tell me Joey…’ Heather grunted.

I didn’t feel like replying to her, so I laid down the situation on her held down head. So much pressure already on my mind, and now I’ve got to confront Heather, a girl I fell in love with. She doesn’t need all this stress, as much as I don’t need it either. Forget it, I’ll tell her. She needs to know what’s been happening for all these months and weeks and even days!

I walked into the empty room to find that the wallpaper had been scratched off. As I looked behind me, I could see that the celling was falling apart. And the stench of baby shampoo started to make me feel little noxious. I felt a little afraid of my own home, all this crap going on isn’t going to help me spill the truth to the woman I love! As for the room itself. It didn’t look too bad…

‘H-Heather… I’ve been out because of your- because of your ex… I mean- your friend, I don’t know anymore…! I mean R-Ryan… Okay! Ryan has been bullying me…’ I mumbled.

Heather finally lifted her head out of her hands, and her eyes looked sorer than when I first saw her this afternoon. Her nails had been painted yellow, she must have been nail painting… She looked at me with a horrified face. Tears were rolling down her nose, and I didn’t know what to say to make her feel better… I’m a terrible boyfriend, and possibly even a worse husband…! Before I could tell her more about Ryan, she hid herself under a dark crimson red curtain.

‘D-Don’t be like that Heath… Please, I’ve seen Ryan because of you, I-I did it for you Heather…’ I cried.

‘Y-You did it for yourself… I d-don’t want to talk to you a-anymore Joey… Just go please, leave me to sleep… We’ll speak when I’m awake yeah? I don’t hate you Joey, I love you… I really do, just go…’ Heather whispered softly.
