Part 72
Can I back out?
I’m standing in the doorway to the bar, considering whether I just should turn back around and leave. I mean what if he doesn’t even show up? And what if he does? I don’t know what will be worst. I’m looking around, trying to see if I can see him anywhere. I can’t.
We were supposed to meet at 8PM and now it’s 10 minutes past. Ugh.
Maybe it was just a stupid joke that I took way too serious and now I’m making a fool of myself by actually thinking he was being serious about this.
- “Looking for someone?” A familiar voice suddenly asks behind me, and I can’t help but feel rather relieved that I wasn’t bailed this time. Thank God.
I turn around to meet Justin’s eyes. He’s wearing a dark navy blue colored pullover hoodie along with some tight ripped jeans and a pair of white sneakers. Looking way too casual compared to me.
I knew it goddamn. I inwardly slap myself for not figuring that out before I decided my dress code.
As I turn around he looks down at my dress, checks me out and I feel a little embarrassed.
- “You could’ve given me a dress code, then this ‘completely overdressed vs. non overdressed but rather causal dressed’ wouldn’t have happened” I quickly say as an answer to his look at my dress.
- “Nah this is what I wanted you to dress like” he then answers, smirking at me which causes me to arch a brow. Really? That’s a smart move, boy. Very smart.
- “Oh really?” I roll my eyes as I turn back around to find a table. As I start walking Justin joins me, laying his hand gently on the bare skin of my back and the feeling of his skin against mine immediately sends shivers down my spine.
- “Can I get you something to drink?” A waitress asks us as we reach a table and starts taking off our jackets. I look at Justin.
- “A mojito for me” Justin answers as we sit down. The waitress smiles at him before unwillingly turning her attention to me.
- “Um, I’ll just have the same” I quickly answer. She nods and walks away.
- “So, have you prepared your vocals for tonight? You know I’ve been looking forward to this evening ever since your little show” Justin smirks, obviously amused. I feel my cheeks turn red.
- “Don’t even mention it. I need at least 5 drinks before you’ll even make me go up there” my answer makes him laugh and I can’t help but join him.
- “You look good tonight, I like that dress” he then says and nods towards my dress as he changes the subject. My eyes meet his.
- “Thank you. I still regret that I chose it though, I’m still overdressed you know” I answer and Justin laughs again. The waitress comes back with our drinks, I smile at her.
- “Now shush and drink, if we have to get you at 5 drinks you better get starting” Justin winks and we both laugh as we take a sip of our mojitos.

- “I can’t believe I just did it!” I shriek as I sit back down on my chair.
Minutes ago I was standing on the stage singing “Hit Me Baby One More Time” and I have to admit that it was fun! I had so much fun, and so did everyone else I think.
Justin was clapping and cheering for me all through the song and it somehow gave me much more confidence to complete the song. And even though I was the one singing on stage, everyone else at the bar was singing a long, I even caught Justin singing along at one point!
- “It has to be your turn now, doesn’t it?” I ask him, my energy refilled. He snorts and looks down at his almost empty glass.
- “I don’t do singing, sorry” he then says, causing me to laugh and roll my eyes.
- “Well neither do I! Come on, just one song!”
He looks up at me for a while, considering the option. Then he sighs as a smile forms on his lips.
- “On one condition” he says and I arch a brow, waiting for him to elaborate.
- “What?” I say, eager for him to sing and humiliate himself just like me.
- “I want you to go with me somewhere right after” his words makes me pinch my eyes a little.
- “Somewhere?” I ask, confused.
- “Yes, somewhere” he repeats, smirking very mysteriously at me. I bite my lip.
- “Okay, fine. Now go up there and sing!” I clap my hands together, leaning back into my chair as he chuckles and rolls his eyes, then finish his drink before walking up to the DJ.
He talks to him and the DJ nods. Then he walks up on stage and in front of the microphone.
I smile at him, excited just like everyone else. Even the waitress has stopped serving for a bit as her attention is on Justin as well. As the music starts, my heart suddenly starts beating faster and it’s like I feel butterflies in my stomach. He has chosen to sing Fast Car by Tracy Chapman.

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we can make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere

I smile as the word “somewhere” is mentioned again and I can’t help but feel that he’s referring to our own little “deal” that we just made right before he went on stage.
And his voice. Wow. I had no idea that this boy could actually sing. Everyone at the bar is quietly listening to his voice, they all seem very shook by his beautiful voice, just like I am.

You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
We gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

I look around the bar. Everyone is mesmerized and he sounds so talented it’s almost as if we’re at some intimate concert. Does he sing often? How many knows about this? Am I the only one?
Suddenly his eyes catch mine and hold a lock on them.
We’re looking into each other’s eyes as he finishes the song.

So remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling that I could be someone
Be someone, be someone

As he stops singing and the music goes off everyone applauses, most people even stand of from their chair. Justin smiles and nods as he thanks everyone, then gets off the stage and down into his chair again. My eyes haven’t left him yet.
- “Wow, what the hell? I don’t do singing” I mimic trying to sound like him.
- “Yeah, well…” Justin just shrugs, then chuckles as he looks down at his empty glass.
- “Who knows about this?” I ask, smiling. I’m curious now and hopefully this won’t be the first and last time I get to hear that voice.
- “You… and my mom.”
- “Your mom knows about this?” I ask, raising my eyebrows.
- “Yea we used to sing together when my stepfather wasn’t home… She was the one who taught me this song.” He smiles at me, a genuine smile that shows me pride. I can’t help but smile back.
- “Now let’s go!” he says and gets up from the chair as he grabs his jacket “we had a deal” he adds.
“Coming!” I answer as I quickly get up and grab my jacket before following him out of the bar.
