21. Part 21

Part 21

I’m pushing through the hallway doors, almost running into them, holding the little piece of paper in my hand, as I’m searching for Justin. I look everywhere, even his classroom and he’s nowhere to find. I stop at the end of the hallway on the top floor.
God damn it.
I sigh and turn around to walk back to my own classroom, and just as I do so, I see him walk out of the men’s toilet a little further down the hall, just where I past a few minutes ago.
What the hell is he doing on this floor? None of us has class up here. I suppose he hasn’t noticed me yet, because he starts walking the other way towards the stairs. I have to talk to him. Now.
“Hey! Justin!” I shout as I start following him. He doesn’t answer but keeps walking, which makes me speed up. I start running.
“Hey!” I shout again, and this time he turns around and looks at me. He stops.
As I reach him, I hold up the piece of paper in my hand, looking questioningly at him.
“What does this mean?” I ask him, waving the paper. He doesn’t answer, but just looks at it.
“Hey, I’m talking to you – what do you mean with this? You should stay clear of me like what the hell?” I frown, now looking both questioningly and frustrated. He keeps looking at the paper, then takes a deep breathe. “Just do as it says” he finally speaks, turning away from me and down the stairs. What?
“What? No, wait! Justin, what is this shit? Why do you write me something like this?” I follow him down the stairs and grab his shoulder, preventing him from walking any further.
He looks reluctantly at me and clenches his jaw.
“Can’t you just take a message? We should stay away from each other, it’s just that simple!” he says, almost snapping at me. What the hell is wrong with him? And then I think of last night.
“Is all of this because of what happened last night? Because I’m really sorry about what I said. I shouldn’t have said it, and I’m really sorry” the frustrated look on my face turns into a sad and ashamed look. I was mean to him last night, I know.
He chuckles, as if I’ve said something funny. “No it’s not because of last night. Last night just made me realize that we shouldn’t be doing this. shouldn’t be doing this” he says, and his face suddenly turns all serious again. Wow, he’s so weird; I can’t read him at all.
“What do you mean? What is it that you shouldn’t be doing?” I just really don’t get it.
He rolls his eyes “listen, I don’t wanna discuss this. Do as the paper says, and leave me alone, okay? That’s the best for both of us, trust me.” He starts walking down the stairs again, and this time I can’t stop him. I just watch him leave, not moving at all. What is up with him? Why won’t he suddenly have anything to do with me? I mean, we hung out last night, and honestly he seemed interested in getting to know me, and now he’s just… arrogant and… cold…
There must be something wrong. Whether it’s something did or not. He can’t just change like that over the night. I’m curious. I got to know what has changed him all of a sudden.
But I’ll have to wait. Class is calling now, and I really can’t miss it. Soon the exams are here, and then there’s holiday. I can’t wait, I so need it right now.
I walk down the stairs and find my classroom. Everybody’s already in there, and just as I walk in, Ms. Darvins comes in. Perfect timing. I sit down at my seat and I can feel Lea’s eyes all over me, craving for answers about where I’ve been the last twenty minutes.
And I’ll tell her.
