Conformation

I followed my sister deep into the tall grass, running as fast as my little legs could carry me.
“Kaitlin, where are you going?” I asked my older sister as she hopped the barbed-wire fence to the outside world. She looked around us, making sure we were alone.
“I’ll be back soon Tommy, don’t worry. I’m just gonna go hang out with some friends for awhile, okay?” she smiled back at me.
“But mommy says we’re not allowed to cross the fence. It dangerous.”
“Gosh, Tommy, stop being such a little brat. I told you, I’ll be safe,” she rolled her eyes at me. But I knew something she didn’t know; that she wouldn’t be safe. Not out there.

1. PROLOGUE

“Besides, I’ll be back before—“ she was beginning to comfort me when she was stopped by a giant, purple bug leaping for her throat. She stood there for moment, stunned and in the next instant, I watched my older sister sink to her knees in tears, clasping her neck tightly.  Being so young, I hadn’t a clue what was going on.

“Tommy, I need you to do me a favour,” she choked through tears.

“Yes, Sissy?”

“Can you tell mommy that I won’t be coming home? And that I love her very much.”

“But Sissy!” I yelled for her, extending my arms towards her.

“No Tommy, I can’t hold you. Just do what I asked…okay?”

My tiny and frail body became racked with tears as I merely answered, “Okay.”

“I love you so much, Tommy. Remember that.”

Kaitlin started convulsing wildly; her eyes turning red as she started foaming from the mouth.

“Run, Tommy!” she yelled in a menacing voice, “Run!”

Those were the last words my sister spoke to me. The last words my sister ever spoke.
