My Brother's Best Friend | One Direction (13+)

The name's Amber. Amber Tomlinson. Yes, I'm the sister of Louis Tomlinson, the biggest player in school. That's about all I'm known for, and all I'm seen as. Although I'm attractive, I've never had a boyfriend. Wanna know why? Because Louis tells all of the guys to stay away from me, even his best mate, Harry. Louis says I'm "too nice" for my own good. And Harry . . . well, Harry's even worse. He's the most arrogant, egotistical player I've ever met. And he flirts with me constantly! I could kill him sometimes.

5. Hoodies & Scary Movies

Ten minutes later, we arrived at the movie theater. I sent a quick mass text to Pietra, Ariana, Liz, Perrie, Niall, and Zayn to let them know we were here, telling them to meet us in the lobby.

The parking lot was packed; I giggled as Harry and Louis bickered like a married couple over where to park. The theater was in a shopping center near the mall, and it was bustling with afternoon cheer. Moms pushed babies in strollers; girls in shorts walked by talking animatedly to each other. A couple about our age sat on the fountain, holding hands and talking, laughing like they were having the best time in the world. I frowned; it seemed like everyone was in a relationship lately except for me.

At last, we found a place to park, and we all got out of the car. As we made our way to the theater, the guys walked in front of me, and even though my legs were as long as theirs, for some reason I couldn't keep up. I heard them laughing about something, and Harry looked back at me before giggling with Louis like third grade girls.

"Keeping up, are you, Amber?" Harry teased.

"Ha-ha," I said sarcastically. They burst out laughing. I rolled my eyes and continued to follow them to the lobby, glad I wouldn't be a third wheel for much longer. Even though I'd been around the two forever, sometimes it was hard to be one of the guys. I sighed as we fell into line.

When it was our turn to pay for our tickets, a girl with straight blonde hair stood behind the booth. Her eyes lit up when she saw Harry and Louis, and they roamed up and down their bodies as she looked at them seductively through her eyelashes. I recognized her as April, a girl that went to our school. She was known notoriously around school for being the girl who literally banged everyone there.

"Hello, how can I help you today?" she purred, raking her hand through her hair. "Don't you guys go to Rosefield? You look so familiar."

"Yup," Louis said stiffly, looking uncomfortable. Harry and I exchanged a glance, trying not to laugh; Louis had a one-night-stand with her last year. April had sex with so many guys, she probably didn't even remember that she'd had sex with him. Louis just stood there, frozen, not knowing what to do. Harry and I glanced at each other again.

Suddenly Harry stepped forward. "Three tickets to Insidious 2," he said, handing her his credit card. She took it, looking a little confused

"Harry, you seriously didn't have to do that, I brought money," I told him, concerned. Wow, he was going to pay for all of us?

He smiled at me, an actual smile. Not a smirk. "My treat."

I laughed, still a little weirded out. "See, these are the moments when I wonder if your soul is momentarily abducted by aliens."

"Very funny, Dots." Harry rolled his eyes and took the tickets from April. Her hand fell limp as she gaped at us.

"Come again," she called after us, but we ignored her.

I literally had to drag Louis away from the booth. He still had his mouth open, his blue eyes wide and shocked. Harry and I burst out laughing as soon as we were out of earshot.

"You okay, mate?" Harry slapped Louis' back, and that seemed to bring him back to earth.

"Good lord." Louis pinched the bridge of his nose, taking a breath. "Did you see the way she looked at me?"

"Honestly, I don't think she even remembered," I put in, smirking.

"Whatever," Louis huffed as we opened the doors to the cinema lobby. The cold air contitioning blasted as soon as we walked in, making me shiver. Goosebumps prickled on the surface of my skin, and I rubbed my arms, my teeth already chattering.

"Are you cold?" Harry smirked.

"Shut up, I'm sensitive," I replied, just knowing he was about to tease me again.

"Hey, I was just asking if you wanted to borrow my jacket," he said, holding up his hands defensively, his eyes sparkling mischievously.

I whirled around to face him; my jaw dropped to the floor. "You're shitting me, aren't you?"

"No, I-" he began, and this time Louis turned around.

"You better not be flirting with my sister again, Styles," he growled. "What's this I hear about a jacket?"

"Chill, man, I was joking," Harry said with a laugh.

Louis just smirked knowingly. "Yeah. Sure. I'm watching you, man. If you try anything-"

"If he tries anything, I'm going to kick him right where it hurts," I told Louis, patting him on the shoulder. "So we're good."

Satisfied, Louis turned back around.

Harry sped up to where I was walking, and he was so close his shoulder brushed against mine. I tensed, smelling the spice of his cologne. He looked at me, and then whispered in my ear.

"You know you would have wanted to."

The words were almost haunting. The breath on my ear was hot, yet it sent tingling shivers up my spine. My eyes widened, and I almost forgot how to breathe.

I turned my head. Our faces were so close together our noses were almost touching. His eyes lit up like Christmas lights as he continued to smirk at me. I felt light-headed. How had Louis not noticed this yet? My eyes shifted to the other side of the lobby. Louis was over there already, talking with our friends.

It was me who pushed away. "Boy, you sure like to push it to the limit, don't you?" I muttered. Harry just laughed, not taking his eyes off me.

"You're looking hot today, Amber," he purred, looking me up and down.

Okay, that was it. Whatever the hell he was doing, I'd had enough. "Fuck you, Styles," I said, giving him the finger as I turned on my heel and quickly walked away. I could hear him laughing behind me. Quickly, he caught up to me just as I reached Louis and our friends.

"Hey, guys," I chirped, trying to pretend like nothing had just happened.

"Amber!" Ariana Grande, one of my best friends, cried, jumping up to hug me. I laughed and gave her a little squeeze. Next was in line was Liz Gillies, another one of my good friends, and Perrie Edwards, a girl I met through Pietra who I was still getting to know. Niall and Zayn were last, and as usual, Louis tensed up when I hugged them, making me roll my eyes.

Harry emerged just then, and as usual Ariana started flirting up a storm. She was so bubbly she couldn't help it; she flirted with every single two-legged male on the planet, even gay guys. Pietra stuck to Louis the whole time as usual, and I could feel him slowly killing me with his eyes.

Once we'd all embraced, Pietra departed from Louis for once and linked her arm through mine as we walked to the ticket guy. "So, Harry Styles, huh?" she mused in my ear once everyone was out of earshot.

"What are you talking about?" I asked, my heart jumping for some weird reason.

Pietra's eyes sparkled knowingly. "I think you know."

I sighed, exasperated. "Pietra, you just don't get it. I swear, he was flirting with me."

Pietra tilted her head. "I don't know. You seemed to like it."

I scoffed. "Please."

"Mmm-mmm-mmm," Pietra tutted, but I didn't respond, and that was the end of that.

After we'd gone through the tickets, everyone wanted to get snacks. We decided on three large popcorns for everyone to split. All together it was fifteen something dollars, and as I was reaching down in my bag, Harry stopped me.

"I got this," he told me, laying a hand on my arm. His fingers were warm and sent a rush I couldn't identify through me.

I looked up at him, flipping my long dark bangs out of my eyes. "Are you serious?" I asked. He just laughed and nodded. "What's with you wanting to pay all the time?"

"What, guys can't be gentlemen these days?"

"Well, that's not what I mean, they can, but not you. I mean, no offense, but you can be a total arse." I winced at my words once they'd come out of my mouth. I hadn't meant to be so mean, it'd just came out like that.

"Gee, thanks," he joked, but I saw the hurt flash across his face.

I grimaced. "I'm sorry, Styles. I just realized how terrible that sounded."

"It's cool." he said quietly, looking at the ground. I was shocked; this was a different part of him I'd never seen before. Why didn't he act like this all the time?

"I suck," I said guiltily, biting my lip.

I expected him to snicker or make a suggestive comment, but he just looked up and smiled. Again, not a smirk, but a genuine smile. It warmed something in my heart that I couldn't place.

"It's okay," he said.

"Okay. Are we good?" I asked awkwardly after a beat, shifting from foot to foot.

He nodded and laughed. "We're good."

"Good."

We ended up splitting the cost of the popcorn. After that, the group headed down the hall towards the movie theaters. Insidious 2 was in Theater 13, ironically. I shuddered, wrapping my arms over my chest. I really hated scary movies, but I'd deal. I guess this just meant another batch of nightmares.

Ariana and Niall fell into step with me; we chatted about random things for a while and it helped calm my nerves. When we stepped into the theater, it was like hell had frozen over. It was even colder than the lobby. I shivered, rubbing my hands up and down my arms in a pathetic attempt to get warm. As if on cue, I heard a familiar laugh behind me.

"I wasn't kidding about the jacket, you know," Harry whispered in my ear, his voice echoing through my brain and making me feel dizzy for some reason. I shook it off and glared at him.

"Sure you weren't," I grumbled.

He blinked. "Amber, I'm saying this as a friend. Do you want my jacket or not?"

I hesitated. Louis and all our other friends had already started walking down the aisle, looking for seats. I looked from them back to Harry, and shuddered again.

Harry chuckled darkly. "I assume that's a yes."

"Damn you, Styles," I grumbled as he lifted his grey sweatshirt over his head.As he did so, his shirt underneath slightly lifted up, giving me a perfect hint of his abs, even revealing a little tatoo with handwriting-like lettering. I squinted, trying to read what it said. When his head popped up again, he gave me a knowing smirk.

I blushed. Great going, Amber!

He'd just caught me checking him out for the third time today. Well, he'd done it more than me, so I guess we were even. With a chuckle, he threw the hoodie in my direction and began walking towards the group.

I lifted the hoodie over my head, breathing it in. It smelled just like him; a scent that was so familiar yet so hard to place. After I'd put it on, I shook off this weird feeling and caught up to him and my friends, ignoring the knowing smirk Pietra kept giving me.

Louis ended up sitting on the very end next to Pietra, much to his dismay. Guess he'd have her to keep him cozy throughout the entire movie. He was upset about that, but he was also pissed at the fact that he wouldn't be able to keep an eye on me. I swear, he was like a vicious watchdog.

On the other side of Pietra was Ariana, and on the other side of Ariana was Zayn. Perrie was on the other side of him, and Zayn looked a little uncomfortable yet pleased that two cute girls were on either side of him. I was happy for him. Beside Zayn was Niall, and I was on the other side of him. We chatted happily as the previews started. Much to my dismay, Harry sat on the other side of me. I tried to ignore his presence as best as I could, but it didn't matter anyway because he was too busy flirting with Liz, who sat beside him.

Most of the previews were ones of horror movies, and even they scared the crap out of me. I was focused on one in particular, yet another remake of Evil Dead, when I heard someone ask a question from the aisle.

"Excuse me, do you guys have the time?" a British, male voice asked. I glanced up, but it was hard to see in the dim light who was talking. All I could make out was an athletic frame and a buzz-cut.

I glanced at my phone. "It's 2:45," I told the stranger.

"Thanks." I could hear the smile in the guy's voice. I turned my attention back to the previews.

About five minutes later, the movie started, and everyone grew quiet. I could already tell by the scary music that this was going to be the most frightening thing I'd ever experienced. I gripped tightly onto the sleeves of Harry's hoodie, and actually found myself breathing in the smell of it to calm me down. God, scary movies were so nerve-wracking to me!

From my left, I felt a tap on my shoulder. Niall grinned over at me.

"Are you scared?" he asked.

"N-no," I lied, ashamed that I'd stammered. He laughed, and I thwacked him playfully on the head.

After a while, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. The camera panned on a creepy-looking house, and suddenly we heard a loud bang. I nearly screamed, my heart racing as I jumped about a half a mile in my seat. Suddenly, I felt the chair on my left shaking. Startled, I glanced over to see Styles silently laughing.

"Fuck you, it's scary," I muttered, which made him laugh even harder. A few people in front of us turned around and looked at us distastefully. I took a deep, calming breath and tried to focus on the movie.

It really was scary. It was about ghosts or demons or something; a haunted family. I hadn't watched the first one for obvious reasons, so I didn't know what the heck was going on, except that it was really freaking me out.

About thirty minutes into the movie, I had both my arms slung around Harry's shoulder and my face buried into his shirt, pressing so hard against him my nose turned numb. I didn't even think about the fact that I was cuddling with my brother's man-whore of a best friend, all I could think of is that I was scared and just needed the comfort. I didn't even think about the fact that Louis was only a few seats away from us.

I was surrounded by Harry's smell, from his sweatshirt to his actual body. I squealed at all the scary parts, causing Harry's arms to tighten around me protectively; my heart raced at his embrace. I glanced up at him, and I saw his eyes twinkling in the dim light of the theater like fireworks or something. He smirked and just held me tighter.

"It's okay, I'm here," he whispered in my ear. Once again, his voice seemed to hypnotise me. I stiffened; the tingling sensation he'd left in my ear had seemed to have woken me up and made me realize what I was doing. Fuck! I was cuddling with Harry! Harry Styles, my brother's best friend, for Christ sake! What the hell had gotten into me?! I couldn't breathe. I wasn't even concentrating on the movie anymore. What did this even mean? What was I doing?

I stirred a little in his arms. He sensed me shifting and looked into my eyes. I looked away; I couldn't bring myself to look him straight in the eyes. It was almost blinding, like looking into a pair of headlights just as the car was about to run into you. I swallowed, suddenly feeling really hot. When had it gotten hot?  I was cold just a few seconds ago.

I wanted to move away, suddenly feeling uncomfortable, but I couldn't. How could it feel so right, having him hold me in his arms like this, yet so wrong at the same time? I sighed, deciding to let it go. I still didn't know what the heck was going on here, but I couldn't dwell on it much longer. Scary as it was, I actually liked this movie (in a way) and I wanted to see what happened next.

I must have squealed about six times during the entire movie. I actually kept count: I gasped five times, screamed two, and jumped four. The only reason I did so- kept count, I mean- was because I knew Harry would just hold me tighter. I really liked the feel of that, whatever it was; it made me feel safe and secure.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, the movie ended. Slowly, just as the credits started, Harry lifted his arms off of me and pulled me away. I blinked, surprised and a little disappointed. My heart was still racing, to my dismay. I shook my head to clear my galloping mind and picked up my purse as we made our way out of the aisle in a single file-line.

"Did you like that?" Harry smirked. I narrowed my eyes at him.

"Shut up," I mumbled, not sure what else to say.

Suddenly I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was Niall. He began talking animatedly to me about the whole movie, saying it was probably the best horror film of the year, but it would have been better if I had gotten more popcorn for everybody.

"No, stupid," I corrected teasingly with a smile. "You hogged the whole bowl."

"I did not," Niall cried defensively, making me laugh. Zayn caught up to us then. and we started talking casually about the movie. They both teased me for freaking out the whole time; I was glad they didn't say anything about me cuddling Harry. Speaking of Styles... I pushed my hands into the pockets of his big hoodie and looked around for him. There he was, walking along with Louis and Ariana, flirting with her like there was no tomorrow.

I breathed a sigh of relief. I should have known it was nothing but two good friends just cuddling in a totally platonic way. It was all good.

That didn't stop me from wondering why my heart wouldn't stop racing, though.

Suddenly I felt a tap on my shoulder. I whirled around, expecting it to be Niall or Zayn or one of the girls, who had fallen into step behind me.

But it wasn't.

It was the guy from earlier, the one who had asked me the time.

"Hey, Amber," he said sort of shyly. His face was so familiar, and so was his voice. I wondered how he knew my name.

"I'm Liam. I was just wondering... if you remembered me?"

He smiled up at me, and suddenly something in my brain clicked.

It had dawned on me.

This was Liam.

Liam Payne, from seventh grade.
