8. Torture for the Soul

“How did you get into the castle?” I felt the burning iron at my chest; I could hardly breathe, with all the marks there.

Second rule of school: Deny everything when captured.

“I didn’t” I lied, even though I know it’s stupid. I’m in… in some kind of torture chamber.

“Why are you here?” he asked.

“I aren’t” I answered, and felt the burning iron again. ARGH! I wanted to scream, but I don’t want to give him the satisfaction.

“Son, you need to help me get her to lay still” the elderly lighter was in the door, I could recognize his voice; I couldn’t see his face.

The man left me alone in the room, I tried going into my water form, but I guess it’s Tyuonja chains: Not letting any magic through.

A scream sounded through the door, from the hall way, not far from my chamber.

“I hate screamers!” the man was inside my chamber again. Please just make it stop. Another scream sounded from the hall.

Think!

Rachael tells…

“You have some guts girl” he laughed “But you’re still just a human girl…” Yeah I am, and it makes no sense.

“Why are you not just killing me fast?” I asked and stared into the old green eyes.

He sighed “It’s against the law to kill humans using weapons; by using vampire poison the vampires get the blame. But that death is slow and painful” I can feel that! They had dragged me down here, chaining me to the wall, with legs and arm spread apart. I yawned, I feel so sleepy now. I hate this!

“So human - I’m curious what where you doing at the lighters house?” he asked. I laughed, I almost forgot where I came from. Adrian and his family, little Quinn that surely still is guilty.

“Taking a shower” I answered.

He laughed “I know that, you were semi-nude when I took you” he got closer “I mean, why were you there?”

“What does it matter? I’m going to die anyway” I reminded him. He nodded and smiled at me.

“Even though you’re a human you have the spirit of a Lighter. That’s a rare quality in these worlds”.

I nodded and closed my eyes. The pain in my chest is getting harder to bear, I want to cry. I want to laugh.

“I guess” I answered and stared into his eyes. “I have a question, what were you doing at their home?”

He smiled at me. “I was looking for a wind lighter, but they are a water light family”

So Adrian is a water light? I don’t think I ever was told that.

“Why did you choose their family?” I stared at him. I don’t want to fall asleep, I’m not sure if I’ll wake up again.

“I picked one randomly” he sighed and stared at me for a second. “You remind me of someone, but I’m not sure who” Then he left, leaving me in pain. A bag filled with black poison is injecting in me by a little needle in my left and right arm.

It’s hard not to scream all the time. If I do they might kill me faster.

Adrian tells…

The screams stopped, the elderly man came into my cell, standing with the young one.

“How is she?”

“In pain” he smiled at me “I remember you! You were at the water light house where I took the girl”.

Yeah, but I hoped YOU didn’t remember that.

“Really?” the man stared at me, and I could see he judged something.

“Let us put them I cells together, then he can watch his friend die” Thank you, I didn’t say. It’s better than just hearing her screams, not knowing what they might do to her. I couldn’t resist when they took me down and brought me into a much whiter cell. The walls and floor. I got chained to the floor, unable to move to her: She is hanging at the wall like a painting, but with poison running into her veins. They left.

“Are you okay?” she asked. I thought she slept! I got as close as I could. “I’m fine, but you aren’t, you’re dying”

She sighed “I know, but… you shouldn’t have come” I stared into her green eyes “I can take care of this myself”

I doubt that! Even when I fought the darkest lighter he took me down without problems.

“You are human, you can’t fight them” I noticed “You need help”

“I don’t need help” she mumbled “I don’t care if I die anyway”

I stared at her. She had a dress on, a guess they dressed her, her hair was messed up, and her cheeks red.

“What’s so wrong that you want to die?” I asked.

She laughed slowly. “It’s not what’s wrong; it’s that I can’t understand something. Why am I human? How do you define a human?” Huh? That makes no sense at all! Why does that matter?

“A human is a being without any magic” I answered.

“Huh…” she suddenly laughed “I guess I know a real bastard then”

Then her head fell slowly towards her chest and I could understand she was asleep again.

I guess I know a real bastard then. What’s that supposed to mean? I pictured mom, dad, Crish, Quinn and Louisa standing beside me, looking at her discussing what she meant. I could see the night come through the window. I could hear the sound of the liquid smoothly going into her veins. She didn’t awake for many hours, I fell asleep at last. “How can a family do such a thing to a child?” myself being a child I was curious, I tried getting closer to the point of attention. People didn’t mind me, so it was easy; I stared at the child laying over the well dripping blood down in it. A woman stood crying besides the body, making a lot of the people around cry. “My son!” she cried again. I stared at the dead body, cuts everywhere, no eyes. “DARK LIGHTERS!” one yelled “LEAVE OUR VILLAGE AT ONCE!” no one moved, until people started leaving the body and woman alone. I stood alone and stared at the woman. Would my mom do that if I died?

“I’m sorry about your son” I went to her, and she stared at me at first, then she smiled at me.

“I’s okay, I’m sure I’ll meet him again, sooner or later”.

I took the candy in my pocket. “Take this!” I demanded, she took it and patted my head while smiling.

“You should go home, before it gets dark” she noticed. I nodded and ran home. I hate dark lighters. Thinking they can kill whoever they pleases. I ran home, and started eating with mommy.

I awakened, seeing the older man staring at her, still asleep.

“Awake now, huh?” he looked at me with no interest.

I stared at Rachael. She should wake up now; she normally can’t sleep at all.

“It’s a shame she’s human” he noticed “I’m sure she could become a good lighter”.

With all the trouble she has survived yeah, she could.

He walked out, and she opened her eyes looking at me. “Adrian” she said while breathing hard. “I’m not afraid of dying you know”.

I stared at her. “I don’t want you to die! For once, just do as I say and survive!” I yelled to her, she laughed.

“I don’t care what you say” she coughed a bit, then smiled to me. “Besides that we have known each other for about a week, it won’t take any longer to forget me”.

I got up on my feet and moved as close to her as I could. “Are you kidding me? You have messed more with my head than anyone else I know! I introduced you to my family, have saved your 2-3 times and am here because I wanted to save you again. You are more than just a responsibility to me, why won’t you see that?” I yelled a bit, making her stare at me.

She suddenly smiled. “Adrian it’s best for both of us if you don’t speak of those things”.

“WHY?” I asked “Why don’t you want to speak of them?”

She smiled at me. “Just believe me, after I’m dead you might discover why”

I saw a tear rolling down her cheek, making me stare. How can it be she just has giving up like that? She always seems so fit for a fight.

“Why-“

“DROP THE SUBJECT!” she yelled at me.

I took a deep breath and stared at her. “If one of us dies I want to know how you feel about me”.

She looked surprised, but didn’t answer me.

“I don’t want to talk about that”.

“Too bad, I want to” I noticed. She sighed and stared into my eyes. Why won’t she talk to me about it? She can kiss a complete stranger, but when it comes to her feelings she shuts down.

“How do you feel about me?” I asked. She closed her eyes, and a few minutes later I’m sure she was asleep.

I was awake, and saw them come and go, checking the bag and the needles again and again, then leaving without saying a word to any of us.

“Wake up” I tried. I guess it have now been all night, she haven’t looked at me, haven’t stared into my eyes. I’m starting to worry. “WAKE UP!” I yelled at her. She didn’t move one inch. Oh no. “WAKE UP!” I yelled once more. She didn’t move, didn’t respond. “YOU NEED TO WAKE UP!”

Her head is hanging down towards the ground, with her hair in front of her face, it’s impossible to see her face. “RACHAEL; WAKE UP! YOU NEED TO WAKE UP!” I got up, and walked as close as I could. I can’t see her chest rising and lowering, aren’t she breathing? “WAKE UP RIGHT NOW RACHAEL! YOU NEED TO WAKE UP!”  I could hear steps from a far, running towards the chamber I guess. “RACHAEL! WAKE UP, RIGHT NOW!” She didn’t respond. I saw the young one of the men come in, with panic in his face. He ripped out the poison and got her down from the wall. He moved her hair and looked at the back of her neck. “Rachael, Wake up” he started to shake her. “WAKE UP!” Her eyes opened shortly, but were then kept shut.

“Rachael, wake up” I stared when tears started running down his cheeks. What? That makes no sense.

“RACHAEL; WAKE UP!” he yelled, and kept shaking her.

He eyes opened a bit, and she breathed heavily.

“Thank god” he mumbled and hugged her.

“Hey dad” I heard from her mouth and then everything went black.
