Something About Her (ON HOLD)

~ON HOLD to be re-written~

2. Settling In

I bit my lip in anticipation as the sorting hat chose which house I was to be in. See, when I was at Hogwarts all those years ago for a few days, I had been sorted into Gryffindor. But time and…other stuff…changes people so I had no guarantee to what house I would be in. It did say certain things about Slytherin and Hufflepuff though. “GRYFFINDOR!” it finally shouted. I exhaled a breath I hadn’t even realized I had been holding. “Congratulations Kate,” Dumbledore shook my hand enthusiastically. “Your things will be delivered to your room shortly and I have directed Professor McGonagall to escort you to the Gryffindor common room.” He instructed. I grinned, it was going to be a bit easier to be in the same house I was for a few days all those years ago. “Thank you Professor Dumbledore.” I said and I bowed my head in respect before heading out the door.

We had arrived at the entrance to the Gryffindor common room when Professor McGonagall stopped me “Ms White, I understand that when you were taught by the Ministry, you were in a solitary environment. So, if it would help, is there anything that would help with this transition back into Hogwarts?” she asked kindly. I thought for a moment. “Actually, there is something. If it’s possible, I used to take long walks after classes so, could I maybe be able to wander off alone after classes? Sometimes I just need to be able to think.” I looked up, my eyes wide in the classic puppy dog-eyes. She couldn’t resist that. “Hmm, yes I think that that would be quite alright.” She patted my shoulder before striding away. I did a little jump and fist pump in the air in excitement. A boy with pale hair wearing the black and green robes of Slytherin just happened to walk past at that moment and looked at me strangely. I grinned sheepishly and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. He walked towards me hesitantly. “So, is it true? Is the famous Katelyn Ivy White really back? For good? Or are you just a spy for the Ministry to go running back every week to sell our secrets?” he said scornfully. I was taken aback but I recovered quickly and snapped back “It’s Kate, if you please. And no, I’m not a spy for the ministry. Oh, and who, may I ask, are you?”  He smirked. “I’m Draco Malfoy, pureblood.” I sighed deeply. “What’s wrong with you,” he scorned. “Afraid of being in a greater beings presence huh? You a mudblood?” I scoffed at his discourteous remark. I didn’t like him much so far. I rubbed my temple. “Actually no. Pureblood.” I retorted. “Then what’s your problem?” he sneered. That’s it. I’ve had enough of this guy’s rudeness. “Maybe once you’ve got your head out of your ass, I might tell you.” I bit back angrily before stalking away into the common room, closing the entrance in his stunned face.

I was met with silent stares at first, but after a few seconds only I was bombarded with questions and the handshakes of people introducing themselves. I smiled and tried to reply to as many as I could before I felt two pairs of arms lift me out of the tangle of people. “Oi, let her breathe.” one said. “Yeah, she’s got stuff to do.” said the other. I turned around to see who they were. Woah, they looked identical. “I’m Fred and this is George.” The one on the left introduced them both. “Here, go up the stairs over there and the girls dormitories are on the right.” said George. I thanked them and crossed the room to climb the stairs. I wondered if I would have any roommates and if so, how many? I walked through a hallway which had doors with names on them. Some doors were open, revealing chattering girls while others were shut. I reached the door with just one other girls’ name above mine. I pushed open the door slowly and saw the girl, who I had seen earlier with the two boys, sitting in the window seat reading a book. She looked up and smiled genuinely. “Hey, you must be Katelyn. I’m Hermione” she stuck out her hand and I shook it gratefully while saying “It’s nice to meet you. But I prefer Kate.”  She laughed. “That’s cool. Um your stuff’s over there so you might want to get changed into your robes before we head off to dinner.” I thanked her and did as she suggested.

We walked down to the great hall where we were to eat. “You can sit with us if you want. I’ll introduce you.” Hermione suggested. “Yeah thanks. That’d be nice.” I replied. As soon as we stepped into the room, all eyes turned to us. “Why is everyone staring at us?” I whispered to my newly found friend. “Not us, YOU. You’re quite famous you know, being taken by The Ministry and all.” She said out of the side of her mouth. Breaking the awkward moment, Dumbledore cleared his throat from the other side of the hall and began to make an announcement. “Ahem. As you may have noticed already, we have a new, or should I say old, student in our midst. Katelyn White has returned from The Ministry to study at Hogwarts once again. I expect you all to make her feel welcome once again. Now, let’s eat.” With that, wonderful platters of food appeared on the long tables and everyone lost interest in me as they began to eat and a loud chatter arose. Hermione grabbed my arm and dragged me to a table where I recognized the two boys I had seen with her earlier were sitting. “Kate, this is Harry and Ron. Guys, this is Kate.” She introduced us all. “Hey it’s nice to meet you.” Ron said with a smile. “Yeah. So how did you and Hermione meet?” Harry asked with a curious look on his face. “Oh, we’re roommates.” I explained before I began to eat some of the delicious food. I thought about my parents and a pang of sadness hit me. My parents were purebloods, it’s true.  Daniel and Cordelia White was a powerful pair of witch and wizard. But the Ministry of Magic was more powerful and they were taken custody in return for my cooperation in this experiment of learning. I missed them, but I found solace in the fact that, as long as I did as The Ministry said, they would be safe.

“Kate. Kate? Kate are you alright?” Hermione snapped her fingers in front of my face. I must have been in a daze for a while for the remainder of my small amount of food was stone cold. I pushed it away and it disappeared. “Blimey is that all you’re eating?” Ron asked in disbelief. “No, of course not. Dessert’s still coming isn’t it?” I shot him a fake smile and looked across to the next table. The boy that I had had a run in with earlier, Draco Malfoy I think, was looking at me with a strange expression. As soon as he caught my eye he looked away and pretended to be totally engaged in the pie he was eating. Hmm, strange. I didn’t think much of it as I tucked into my own pie, lemon meringue, and engaged into a conversation about Quidditch with Harry.

*Harry’s P.O.V.*

This girl, Kate, she seemed normal but I don’t know. There’s something about her that I just can’t quite put my finger on. Underneath her friendly and talkative attitude, there’s some secret she’s hiding. Sure, everyone has secrets. But her eyes seem like they’ve witnessed firsthand something disconcerting. “Alright guys, it was really nice meeting you but I’m really tired. I think I’m just gonna go to bed. Goodnight.” Kate said as she stood up from the table. We all chorused goodnight back at her and I watched her hair swish slightly as she walked out of the room. “I don’t know about you but I think she’s hiding something.” I said quietly, turning back to Ron and Hermione. “I think so too. I just can’t quite put my finger on it.” Hermione replied worriedly. We both looked at Ron. “Look, it’s probably nothing. Let’s just leave it alone and if there is something going on, it’ll come up eventually right? And besides, you’re her roommate,” he turned to Hermione now “If you see anything strange going on then we can look into it then.” He finished. “Ron’s right. It is only the start of the year. Let’s just let her get settled in and we’ll keep an eye on her. Anyways, I’m tired too. Goodnight” I said as I walked out of the hall. As I was heading over to the Gryffindor common room, I heard low and urgent voices. I pressed myself against the wall, clinging to the shadows, and listened closely. “I’m telling you, something’s going on. The Ministry’s hiding something and she may be the key to finding it out.” One voice whispered harshly. “That may be true but there’s nothing we can do about it now. Listen, if we…” the voices faded as they moved away and I gave up trying to hear them. I sighed and continued my journey to the common room, my mind swirling with thoughts. I’d bet my wand that they were talking about Kate. Who else could it be? I just need to find out more. I don’t care what we talked about just before, I needed to find out more.
