Something About Her (ON HOLD)

~ON HOLD to be re-written~

5. A Lot Going On

I was shocked. What was he doing here. “Hi,” he said awkwardly. “Uh I saw you run out of the hall so I followed you.” He explained apologetically. I scanned his face for an signs that he might have heard my conversation with The Minister. None. Good, I didn’t need any more problems. “Uh thanks but you shouldn’t be here. It’s against the rules.” I said. “Well neither should you.” He retorted. “Actually, I AM allowed to be here. McGonagall lets me take walks by myself whenever I feel like it.” He blinked. “Oh,” was all he said. I wonder why everyone thinks he’s so mean, I thought to myself, he seems perfectly nice to me. I sighed and plonked myself down on the soft soil and buried my head in my hands, “What’s wrong?” he asked softly, crouching down next to me. “Nothing.” I mumbled. He didn’t believe me. “It is the whole mind invasion thing?” he asked nervously. I stiffened. How did he know? Maybe he did hear the conversation after all. “You really don’t need to worry, everyone is nervous about it. No one knows what to expect.” I relaxed once more. It was just a general guess. I lifted my head up slightly and saw the moons reflection in the lake. I raised my head up further and gazed at the real thing in the starry sky. “We should probably go back now.” I stated flatly. He stood up and offered his hand to help me up. I took it and he pulled me to my feet. I let go but he didn’t. I looked up at him with a questioning look on my face. “Hey, I know I was kinda mean the other day and I’ve only known you for a little while but um did you maybe want to um go to Hogsmeade or something with me?” I was taken aback. I had never been asked out by a guy before! “Uh sure. I’d love to.” I said. He visibly relaxed but stiffened again. “But uh this may seem weird but we have to keep it a secret. I’m not sure if I want anyone to know. Sorry if that changes anything.” He said ashamedly. I squeezed his hand. “That’s fine. I think I’d like to keep it a secret too.” I assured him. “It makes it seem more exciting as well.” I added when he didn’t seem convinced. We walked back through the forest, hand in hand until we reached the school and we parted ways.

I tried to look normal as I walked back into the common room and headed straight to my room to check my schedule for the whole mind invasion thing. I scanned the sheet of paper and saw my name near the bottom.

I nearly cried. For one thing, I got Snape, and for another, I had to go every night at 10:30! How was I going to get any sleep on top of homework? I pushed inside where Hermione was already getting ready for bed and groaned out loud. “Oh Kate, I’m so sorry you got Snape.” She said apologetically. “When does it start?” I asked. “Tomorrow.” She replied sleepily. I got ready for bed and didn’t say the release spell until I was safely under the covers. And I fell into a troubled sleep.

The next morning I woke at dawn and got ready for school quickly. I headed out the door, glancing back at Hermione who was still fast asleep, and ran out of the common room. I didn’t really know where I was going or what I was doing until dark lines appeared on the wall in front of me. The room of requirement! I waited for the iron door to fully reveal itself before pushing inside. It was empty. Just polished floorboards and the walls covered in full length mirrors. I didn’t think there was any use of it until I saw what was in the corner; my old pointe shoes and ballet clothes. I smiled. It would be great to dance again. When I was studying at The Ministry, they had let me take ballet lessons in my spare time. I did and I loved it. It was my passion. Pulling on the tights, pointe shoes, black leotard and wrap skirt, I checked the time and saw that I had about four hours until I would have to get ready to go to breakfast. I muttered the release spell which was hiding all my scars so that I wouldn’t feel so heavy and tired when I danced. The low-backed leotard kept my scarred back in full view and I wrinkled my nose at the sight of it. As I closed my eyes, soft piano music began to play somewhere. And I danced. I danced as if I had no worries in the world. I danced as if I was a cloud floating in the sky. As if I was a butterfly, fluttering in the wind. I felt the welcome strain on my muscles as the hours went by and felt the familiar agony on my toes as I lifted up on pointe. I felt the drops of sweat sliding down my back and noticed the wisps of hair falling out of my bun. The music stopped and I finished the fouette I had been occupied with perfectly. Arms raised in the concluding pose, I lowered my head and curtseyed to no one before cleaning up for breakfast.

I passed through the day in a turmoil of emotions. One moment I was excited and happy about my date with Malfoy, then the next I was sick with fear about my appointment with Snape, then the next I was irritated with the amount of work I had to do after class. I walked to my next class, care for magical creatures, alone. As soon as Harry, Ron and Hermione saw the look on my face at breakfast, they decided it was best to leave me alone for a little while. When I had walked into breakfast that morning, I had overheard them in a conversation about how they thought I was hiding something. Geez, I was really going to need to up my game. I hung back and followed the rest of the class into the forest. I glanced up from the damp leaves and stumbled on a root as I saw an interesting creature. I approached it cautiously, curious as to what it was. It seemed to bow its head to me and I proceeded to stroke it. “It’s a thestral,” said a voice from behind me. I turned around and saw Luna standing barefoot. “It’s wonderful.” I replied, turning back to the majestic creature. “Yes, but only people who have seen someone die can see them.” She said gently. I froze, I had seen many people die and each one had been a dagger twisted in my heart. “People avoid them though, because they’re…” “Different.” I finished off for her. She nodded and walked back to class. Just before we walked into it, she stopped me. “I saw you and Malfoy yesterday.” She said. My eyes grew wide. “Are you two…?” I nodded and blushed furiously. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.” She assured me. I looked up, surprised. “Thank you.” I said, smiling at her. “Hey, I’m going swimming tomorrow in the Black Lake, do you want to come?” she asked me. “But it’s freezing!” I squeaked. “Yeah but I’ve been practicing this new spell that would keep us warm.” She guaranteed me. “Alright then. That’d be fun.” I replied happily. “Cool, I’ll meet you there at four.” With that, she skipped off and I pretended to pay attention during the class.
