Over and Out

Emma Hamilton is dealing with being a senior while having a crush on Jackson Reeder who she can't seem to shake. With her two best friends as side kicks at her side, can she take the heat or will she melt under school and the pressure of the guy?

4. You

Sadie was stressing me out to the maximum capacity a seventeen year old girl could have. Every single class period we had together she wouldn't stop talking about the dance or the milk carton that had the anonymous name 'Will' written on it. I was about to lose my freaking mind. "Is everything okay?" Sadie whispered to me while we were sitting in our Writing Class. We were in the very back and had the two desks in the middle.

"Yup." I said dragging out the 'p' noise.

"Well something just seems off about you. You don't seem like yourself. Is it this homecoming thing? Are you being stressed out by it?" She said nonchalantly. I cranked my head over to her and gave her bug eyes.

"Are you serious? You think I'm the one who is stressed out about the stupid dance? You're the one who won't shut up about it! It would be nice if we could have one conversation where I didn't hear the words date, dance, homecoming, dress, hair, or glitter."

"Okay, okay. I'm sorry. I won't bring it up again until you bring it up yourself. Your an eleven on the panic meter today. What else is bothering you?"

It's so weird how she knows when something else is gnawing at me..kind of like I've been gnawing at my thumb nail every time I see Jackson in the hallway. I've been trying to think of ways to approach him. As much as I wanted to vent to Sadie about Jackson, now was not the time. Talking about my love life issues in the back of Mr. Keyes class didn't exactly strike me as comforting considering half of my class mates would probably be able to hear me no matter how much I whispered.

"It's nothing. We can talk about it later.." I said averting my eyes to the front of the class where there was an empty desk chair which meant that Mr. Keyes went to go photo copy a new homework assignment.

"You know what you need? A girls weekend! We can go get our nails done and then we can go shopping for a fergalicious outfit that will make Jackson go crazy." She smiled promptly at me before she went back to the paragraph she was writing that was due before the end of the period.

"As much as I would love to look fergalicious," I said sarcastically, "I have to volunteer tomorrow"

"Oh, ew.  Afterwards do you wanna hang out?"

Sadie had never been into anything voluntary unless it had something to do with looking pretty. I had been trying to get her to come along with me for the past two weeks since the sign up sheets were put up on the almighty bulletin board.

"It goes until eight and then I have to help clean up which might take up to an hour.  Thanks, but maybe Melanie could go with you?" I shrugged my shoulders and went back to my paper.

I averted my eyes to the clock that was hanging right above the doorway.  I only had fifteen minutes left and all I had was one sentence.  It was harder than I thought writing about any controversial topic I wanted to write about.  I brought my pencil down to the lined paper and continued writing.  As I heard the lead glide along the smooth surface, the words just started coming out.

Just as I finished writing my last word, I heard a knock on the door.

"Come in Jackson" Mr. Keyes said.

My eyes shot up like a catapult.

"What is he doing here?" I leaned over to Sadie's desk and whispered harshly

"I don't know.  I don't know his life, I'm not obsessed with him!" Sadie whispered back.

"Girls, is there an issue?" Mr. Keyes lowered his glasses down to the bridge of his nose and looked at both of us with a fake concerned look on his face.

"No, we were just talking about the paper sir." Sadie said with a wimpy smile on her face.

He glared at us before he went back to talking to Jackson.

"He scares the crap out of me!" She said not so quietly.

I looked back up at the clock.

"Ms. Hamilton, the clock won't tick any faster no matter how much you look at it. And considering the look on your face, I'm assuming you've looked a lot" he said.

What was this guys issue?

"Sorry sir, just making sure I had enough time to double check my paragraph."

"Don't bother, assuming it's like the other papers you've written, better to just hire someone else to write it for you than to waste your time reading something that resembles useless adjectives put together." a smirk spread across his face.

My jaw dropped to the desk, and across the "useless adjectives" I just wrote. Are teachers aloud to say that on school grounds?"

"Who does he think he is? Just because he wrote a book that was number one for one month does not mean that he has to be all gong-ho on his students. I swear, that man thinks that he is god. And his speeches sound like something out of horrible joke book." Sade's said before she stood up to turn in her paper.

I rolled my eyes and let out an exhausted sigh before I scribbled my name in the upper right hand  corner of my paper and stood up to turn it in.  As I inched closer to the basket that was at the edge of Mr. Keyes desk, I made eye contact with Jackson. I quickly looked away and shoved my paper at the way bottom of the stack of all the other students. Mr. Keyes stood up and cleared his throat.

"I will be right back.  I have to go double check something in the office for another student.  I will be back in eight minutes top...but just in case none of you repudnent people can tell time, just ask Emma.  I'm sure she'd be glad to do it for you" he gave us a cheesy smile and walked out of the classroom.

"Wow, he's an ass" Jackson said.

"I'll say." Although I wasn't in the mood to chat with Jackson after I just got pissed on by my teacher, there was no avoiding it now. He started a conversation which would mean I would have to end it as soon as possible.

"But, I have to say his digs at you, were kinda funny" his right side of his mouth curved up into a smile.

"They were not" I crossed my arms in front of my chest.

"Oh come on, he was probably concerned about you.  Didn't want you to get whiplash from looking at the clock so much." his left side curved up in a smile that was cute, yet condescending.

"What are you doing here anyways?" I sneered at him.

"I came to ask Mr. Keyes a question about my paper."

I didn't know Jackson had Mr. Keyes as a teacher.  Writing class with him is hard to get in to. The school board has to have a meeting about each student before they get accepted into the class. The fact that Jackson was possibly a good writer shocked me.  I've never really seen him do homework or show any interest in school ever.  But maybe he actually does put in effort out of school.  Since I've never hung out with him outside of school, I couldn't confirm that theory.

"Emma, the school didn't buy chairs for them to sit around and be used.  Stop bothering this young gentleman and do sit down." Mr. Keyes said as he walked through the door.

"Here you go Mr. Reeder. " He handed Jackson something as I sat down at my desk.

"Thank you, I appreciate it" As Jackson turned to walk out of the room, he looked at me.
"Wait, Emma, how much time is left before the period ends?"

I looked up at the clock, and then at him.

"Half past get the heck out of here"

I crumpled up my first draft of my paper and threw it at him.  He dodged it with his shoulder, then gave me a solute before he smirked at me and walked out of the room.

"You two are so gonna date" Sadie smiled to herself.

"Whoa, back up love doctor.  We can't even have a conversation without making fun of each other. That doesn't really look like a solid relationship to me."

Sadie popped a piece of gum in her mouth then handed a piece to me. I shook my head no declining it. She shrugged her shoulders and put it back in her backpack. The bell rang and everyone stood up and bolted out of that classroom, or hell if you will. Sadie and I walked side by side to my locker. Once we reached it, I started to spin the dial to open it up.

"You realize once you start dating that you are going to have girls who want to rip your head off." she said while she examined people in the hallway.

"What? No, I won't. And we aren't going to date.....but if we did...why would I have people wanting to rip my head off?" I looked up at her as I shoved my notebook between my science binder and math book.

"Jackson Reeder is the hottest guy in school. There are fangirls everywhere you look. There are freshmen who can smell him a mile way, you better watch your back. There like modern day eighth graders that are jacked and stacked on steroids. The girls in this school who like Jackson are rabid fangirls who are waiting for you to slip and crack your head. Remember, todays fan club is tomorrows console and patrol."

I stood up and looked at myself in the mirror in my locker. What if me and Jackson did end up dating? I knew there were other girls who like him...what made me any different than one of those girls that would be pissed if he dated someone that wasn't them.

"Ho-ly crap. I'm gonna die. I'm gonna die and it's all because of rabid girls." I leaned my forhead against my locker door.

"No you're not. Emma, you're the shit. So put your hater shades back on and black out their vibes. Besides, you and Jackson aren't even dating so you have nothing to worry about until you do start dating, and even though I say you will..you might never. So you actually have nothing to worry about." She smiled at me.

I widened my eyes at her.
"I'm gonna be alone forever" I grabbed my reading book and put it in my backpack. As I grabbed it a piece of folded lined paper slowly floated to the floor.  Sadie and I looked at each other, then at the note. Sadie bent down and picked it up. She handed it to me.

I unfolded it while giving her an uncertain look.

"It says, you" I stared at the note that 'you' written in lower case letters.

"What? What is with all this Morris Code crap?" she said ripping the note from my hands.

"Is some one going to kill you? Are you not telling me something...like maybe you have your own A from pretty little liars who is trying to kill you because you are secretly and slut hut?" she said crossing her arms across her chest while raising her left eyebrow at me.

"No, I don't know what that even means, and I don't know what the heck this means either." I put the note in my backpack and slammed my locker door shut. The bell rang which meant school was over.

"Well, I gotta go home and sleep so I can be ready to volunteer tomorrow, are you sure you don't wanna come and be the bestest friend ever?"

"No thank you. And please, I already am the bestest friend ever" she said as she tossed her hair over her shoulder.

"Okay, so just sit here and cross off their names as they came in and tell them to enter their names for a door prize. Oh and if they have an extra member on their teams, they have to pay a $10 fee and give them extra coupons." an old lady named Linda said instructing me.

"Names, door prize, fee, and coupons. Got it" I said smiling at her.

It was now Saturday and I was at our Community Center volunteering for a trivia contest.

"Your helper should be here any minute" She said looking at her watch on her wrist.

"Am I late?" An out of breath male voice said behind Linda. Linda stepped out of the way and I saw....JACKSON. WHAT THE HELL WAS HE DOING HERE?

"What the heck are you doing here?!" I said emphasizing the 'you'.

"Mr. Vallweg made me and the guys help out...we broke his window playing baseball in wood shop class so we're doing community service to pay it off" he walked over the the table I was sitting at and took a seat next to me.

"Thank you for coming dear. " she smiled a smile at him then looked at me.

"I explained what he had to do over the phone so he's all set. Have fun you two!" she said while she waved and walked away from us.

"How's it going?" he asked leaning back in his chair while putting his hands behind his head.

"Fine, excuse me for a minute." I faked a smile at him and walked quickly to the girls bathroom which was about ten steps away. I took out my phone speed dialed Sadie's number. It kept ringing.

"Come on pick up Sadie!" I yelled at my phone

"Love Doctor speaking. What's up? I thought you were volunteering today?"

"I am and you'll never guess whose here...Jackson! Sadie help me! What do I do!?" I started pacing back and forth.

"HE'S THERE!?" She gasped over the phone.

"That is fifty shades of cray!"

"I know! Help me! There is about three inches between us and I don't know if I can breathe when he is that close to me!" I said biting my thumb nail.

"First, stop biting your thumb. I can hear you chomping down on it all the way over here. Second, act casual."

"Okay, you're right. I can do this. I know what I'm doing."

A knock came outside the door.

"Emma, is everything alright?" Jackson said.

"Yeah everything is great! I'm wonderful!" I shouted through the door.

"Okaaay...just checking.." he said trailing off his words

"Fuck me, I dont' know what I'm doing!" I shouted.

"He's here with his friends so he'll probably just hang out with them anyways and leave me with all the work." I peeked out the door and saw Jackson sniffing his arm pits. I scrunched up my nose and closed the door.

"Bro code and suck it. He's here to help you. Wait, why is he there?" she asked

"Community service, they broke a window. Sadie..HELP ME!"

"No worries, if you get lost on what to say..just text me and I'll help you. I'm a communicator, and a little bit physic."

I hung up with Sadie and walked out of the bathroom. I took my seat at the table.

"Is everything okay?" he asked me

"Yeah, I'm goood" I said shaking my head up and down. Oh my god, what the heck was I doing.

"Here's the first group."He pointed to the door.

I put on my brave face and did everything I was supposed to do.

"Have a good time and good luck!" I smiled at them.

"Wow, thanks for the help." I rolled my eyes as I looked at Jackson who sat there quietly.

"Sorry, I'm not very good at talking to strangers" he said quietly like he was embarrassed.

"What? You? I thought you would love to talk, since that's all you and your friends do in math class" I smiled at him and nudged his elbow.

He nudged mine back and smiled at me. Maybe this wouldn't be too bad

"That's it" I said as we folded the table legs up and leaned it against the wall.

"Thanks for helping" I said to Jackson. He started walking out the door and I followed him.

"No problem..even though I was forced to do it Mr. Vallweg, I actually had fun." He smiled at me and put his hands in his pockets. I looked over at his truck and saw his friends waiting outside of it.

"Jackson! Are we going to that party or not?" Mitch shouted at Jackson.

"Yeah, give me a minute!" He shouted at them.

"Well, I'll see you later.." I started walking to my car.

"Wait, would you ah, want to come to a party. I'll drive?" he pointed his thumb at his car.

I looked over at his car and then at his friends.

"No thanks, not really my scene. But thanks for offering." I smiled at him.

He walked closer to me until he was right in front of me.

"Are you sure?" He looked down at me.

"Yyy,yeah positive." I said trying to spit the words out of my mouth. With him so close to me it made it hard for me to speak.

"Okay, well..I'll see you Monday. I had fun, we should do this again sometime" He said as he went in for a hug.

"Okay," is all I said. Wow, I'm a charmer. I watched him walk back to his car. He looked back at me and I smiled and waved at him.

As I unlocked my car I smiled. Jackson Reeder wasn't so bad. I'm starting to remember why I fell for him in the first place.

I opened up my door and got in my car. I closed the door then put my keys in the ignition.

"Hey" I heard a voice say.

I screamed at the top of my lungs.

I looked over to the passenger side and saw Sadie sitting there.

"YOU SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME SADIE! HOW DID YOU GET IN HERE!?" I placed my hand on my chest and breathed heavily.

"You gave me your spare once in case you lost yours so I had my mom drop me off here so I could see how things went and obviously they went pretty good since he gave you a HUG!" she smiled and yelled at me.

I slowed down my breathing and smiled back at her.

"Yeah, but I don't think it he likes me like that. It was just a friendly hug." I started my car and checked my rear view mirror like I always do.

"What you are saying is batshizat cray Emma!" she yelled at me.

Maybe Sadie was right. Was the hug a piece offering or a gesture that meant he was reeling towards being more than friends...if he did consider us friends. But then it hit me.  Jackson wasn't getting my hints earlier to leave me alone because I was doing it all wrong.

"I know why Jackson hasn't gotten the memo as to why I am mad at him." I said smiling and looking over at Sadie.

"Uh, because you've been trying to out douche a douche? I figured that out a long time ago"

Once again, I hate it when she's right.
