14. Seeing Double

Jackson walked over to me and lightly grabbed my arm,

"Emma, you don't have to drink.." he said in a hushed tone.

"I know," I pulled my arm away from him, "I want to," I took another huge chug of beer and walked away from him.

I didn't know where I was going until my eyes landed on an empty stump next to Mitchell. I walked over to him while taking another drink of the liquid which tasted pretty gross but also good at the same time.

"Hey Mitch," I said smiling while sitting down on the stump.

"Oh heyyyyyyy" he said looking at me with closed eyes.

"How ya feelin?" I asked laughing.

"I feel, wonderful" he smiled at me and finally opened up his eyes.

"You're so pretty Em, ya know that? You could be the next Ms. Alaska" he scooted his stump closer to mine.

I wanted to get up and walk away but instead I looked over my shoulder and saw Jackson talking to some girls. I saw that he replaced his beer can for a Mountain Dew. My face grew red as one girl placed a hand on his shoulder and he threw his head back laughing.

"Emma?"

I turned around and saw Mitchell staring at me with a confused look on his face,

"Why do you care about him?" he took another drink out of a bottle he must have gotten after Jackson chucked his into the woods.

"I, I dont. What are you drinking?" I said trying to change the subject.

He raised his eyebrows at me and smiled,

"Here," he handed the bottle over to me, "Try it" and smiled.

"If you like Jackson forget about it." Mitchell said to me before I could grab the bottle. I stared at him while my heart broke into a few more pieces. He nudged the bottle towards me again.

I hesitated but then pictured the girls talking to Jackson and grabbed the bottle. I put it up to my lips and tipped it back. As I took a swallow an unusual sensation of a fire like liquid hit the back of my throat. I released the bottle from my lips and tilted my head back up. I wiped my mouth off with the back of my sweater and lied,

"Wow. That is really good." I coughed, smiled and handed the bottle back to him. He took it and took a huge sip himself.

I looked back at the fire and let it heat burn my face,

"I already have." I said quietly.

"What?" Mitchell said but it sounded more like "wuttttttt"

"Forgotten about him." I picked up a stick and threw it into the fire and watched it as it lit up a little bit more.

"Emma," I heard a voice behind me and turned around to see Dallas standing behind me. His hands were in his pockets which meant that he either finished the bottle I saw him drinking previously or he decided to slow down.

"Hey Dallas," I turned to Mitchell, "Sorry Mitchell but I really need to talk to Dallas. It's important" I placed my hand on his shoulder and stood up.

Dallas held out his hand and looked at me with a cute smile. I grabbed it and walked away from the fire.

"So what's so important you need to talk to me about?" Dallas said letting go of my hand.

I bit my lip and and laughed, "I lied. I just wanted to get away from him. He was too drunk for me" I said.

Dallas laughed and walked further away from the fire.

He stopped when we were almost smack dab in the middle of a group of people. It was just us two in a swarm of a thousand people but it felt like everyone else already found their cliques for that night. I stood up on my toes and looked behind Dallas to try and find Jackson. When I didn't see him I let out a disappointed sigh and landed back on my heels.

"You never texted me back" Dallas said grabbing a mountain dew that was on a picnic bench behind him.

"You never texted me..." I raised my left eyebrow and looked at him.

"Yeah, I know. I was just using that as an excuse so you'd have to text me back when I text you tomorrow." he laughed and took a step forward towards me.

"Ah, I see. And does that uh, work on all the girls?" I laughed but stayed right where I was.

"Only if you want it to" he smiled at me and for the first time I noticed how blue his eyes were. They stood out underneath his thick eyelashes and the light of the fire was lighting them up. My heart started to race and I opened my  mouth to say something but nothing came out except for a deep voice saying,

"Hey Man."

I snapped out of my staring and looked up at Jackson who have Dallas a high five hug thing.

"Sup man." Dallas said.

"Saw you bring Emma here. You two a thing?" he pointed at me.

I choked on spit that suddenly formed in my mouth and Jackson choked on the Mountain Dew he was drinking. He looked at me and smiled and then laughed. The funny thing was, is that I didn't see what was so funny.

"Nah man. We're just friends. She's all yours" he winked at me and took another drink.

I looked at Jackson and Dallas and suddenly felt way too overwhelmed.

"I need a beer." I said turning away to grab one.

"Didn't you just have one?" Jackson said suddenly sounding concerned.

"Well now I need another one." I turned back around and talked through my gritted teeth.

****

As I finished my fourth beer I was feeling pretty good. A little dizzy, but good. I walked over to the fire and through the can in there and walked away. I was stepping on a bunch of sticks and almost tripping over all of them but I didn't care. I saw Dallas standing by Jackson and a group of friends so I skidded over there quickly, sloppy but quickly,

"Hey guysssss," I smiled at them, "Dallas," I then selectively smiled at him.

"Uh, hey Emma. Um, how much did you have to drink?" He asked turning away from his friends.

"One, two, three, four beers!" I smiled and held up a number four on my right hand.

"You had four beers!? Emma, you weight like 120 pounds! It only takes one to get you drunk!" Jackson said turning away from his friends too and looking at me. He crossed is arms over his chest,

"Anything else?" he asked.

"Eh, maybe a few sips of other peoples drinksssss." I said laughing.

"It's a partayyy, who cares?" I said throwing my hands in the air and grabbed a can of beer that was in a case on the ground.

Before I could even crack it open Dallas pulled it away from me.

"I think you've had enough." he said looking at Jackson and then me. He smiled,

"You look like you're actually having some fun though compared to when you first got here. I thought you were going to ask Jackson to take you home early. I heard you were a goody two shoes."

"Whaaaat?" I said taking a huge gasp of air and then dramatically placing a hand on my chest.

"Guess I'm not a goody two shoes anymore. Huh Jackson?" I smiled and raised up my shoulder.

"Whatever." Jackson looked at me and turned away from Dallas and I.

"Party pooper." I said sticking my tongue out at him.

"Do you by chance know the night of time?" I smiled at Dallas.

"If you mean the time of night then yes, I do," he laughed and checked his phone, "Its 12:56" he said putting it back in is back pocket.

"I should probably take you home." Jackson said walking away from the group and then over to my side.

"Nuh-uh! The parties just getting started!" I frowned at him.

"One more drink!" I said stomping my foot. As soon as I stomped my foot I felt a little uneasy and dizzy. I swayed to my left a little bit. Jackson hoisted me back up,

"I think you've had enough" he said.

"See ya later man," he nodded at Dallas and placed both of his hands on my arms to help me walk.

As he was helping me, and we started making our way up the path again someone yelled,

"BEER PONG!" there was huge cheer and I gasped,

"Oh I am so gonna go beat that!" I stepped, more like stumbled away from Jackson.

"Emma!" he called after me.

I turned around and looked at him. I stopped and crossed my hands over my chest and started tapping my foot,

"Well is you comin, or is you not comin soldier?"

He took his hands and folded them behind his head and let out a deep sigh,

"Fine. One," he held up a number one, "One more drink. And just to remind you," he jogged over to me, "I was the one who told you to stop. So tomorrow morning when you're feeling all of this, don't blame me."

"You're the best!" I gave him a high five,

"MOVE OVER BOYS. YOU'RE ABOUT TO GET YOUR ASSES WHOOPED!" I yelled through my hands.

****

"Emma, you promised me only one more drink." Jackson said whispering in my ear as I chugged my fourth cup.

"Hey, its not my fault these guys keep making it in." I finished my drink and made an "Ahhh" sound.

As I shot the ping pong ball into the cup across the table and heard it go in with a little splash, someone yelled,

"Thats game."

I held up my hands in the air and started doing a victory dance.

"Okay, now I'm taking you home." Jackson said.

I stopped jumping and let him lead the way back up the path. My stomach gurgled loud enough for Jackson to hear it and ask,

"Are you okay?"

"I am awesomeeeee" I smiled at him.

I stared into his eyes and kept smiling. He stared back into mine but looked upset.

"You are so gone" he shook his head and then chuckled.

"What is so funny now?" I asked crossing my arms.

"Well," he placed his hands on both of my arms and started walking again, "I just never though I'd see you drunk. Let alone have me the one to take you to the party where you got drunk." He laughed again.

****

The car ride home was silent because I fell asleep. I woke up when I heard felt the car jolt forward a little bit.

"Am I home?" I asked looking around me. Everything looked fuzzy and or doubled.

"Yes" he laughed. He got out of the car and walked over to my side.

I tried unbuckling my seatbelt but I was too drunk and couldn't seem to get it. Jackson opened up my door and stepped up so he was at my level. He reached over and unbuckled my seat belt. He stepped back down and held out both of his hands. I reached for them and slid off the seat. When I landed on the ground I stumbled back a little bit and banged my head on the side where the door closes.

I laughed not feeling a thing and got help from Jackson who helped me stand back up. Well, he helped me as much s he could have.

I looked into his eyes again as I watched him look back at me,

"You have such pretty eyes." I smiled and closed me eyes.

He laughed, "Okayyy, we need to get you inside." He walked behind me and held up upright as we made our way up my steps.

"Do you have a key?" He asked as we stopped in front of my door.

"Do I have a knee?" I asked laughing.

"Duh, right here!" I held up my leg to show him my knee but almost fell over because my balancing abilities weren't too great.

"No, a K E Y" he said yelling it a little so I might understand better.

"Oooohhh, yeahhhhhh.  A KEY," I yelled back and laughed, "In my pocket," I pointed at it.

Jackson unzipped my pocket and grabbed the key. Even when I was drunk he could still make my heart race.

I dizzily watched him unlock my door and place the key on the table that was behind my couch. He went back to me and helped into the living room.

"Where's your room?" He asked, "And please don't say up the stairs"

I pointed up the stairs, then looked back at him and placed my hand over my mouth and started to giggle.

"Oh no" he said, "this is gonna be a doozy."

I laughed and then felt hands underneath the back of my legs and then a hand on my back. Next thing I knew I was hoisted up and was being carried up stairs.

I wrapped my arms around him and laid my head on his chest to help me from feeling like I was sea sick.

When he made his way into my room and laid me on my bed and went into my bathroom. He came back with a bottle of aspirin that I had sitting on my counter and placed in on my nightstand.

"Your so nice" I smiled into my pillow.

"I bet everyone's nice right now," he smiled and pulled the blanket that was folded on the end of my bed. As he laid it over me I heard him say,

"Remember, I warned you."

"Warned me about what?" I said yawning and then curling my legs up into a ball.

"You'll see in the morning." He laughed.

He turned around and walked over to my light switch, he placed a hand over it,

"I'll call and check up on you tomorrow."

Next thing I knew I was looking into pitch darkness. I waited until I heard my front door close and then his truck start up before I closed my eyes to fall asleep.
