6. Adventures of Car Girl and Truck Boy

I went home and finished my homework and shut my phone off for the whole night. I didn't know if Dallas was going to text me or not but I wasn't in the mood to text anyone, not even Sadie.  I went down stairs to eat dinner and stared at the two empty chairs across the table from me. I took my fork and pushed my peas across my plate while thinking about how lonely it gets in this house.  I suddenly became nauseous and thought that finishing my peas would be a horrible idea. I cleaned my plate off and put it in the dishwasher.  I walked up stairs and checked my alarm clock on my night stand next to my bed. It read 7:08.  I threw on my pajamas and turned my light off. I walked to my bed, pulled down my covers, and then covered up my legs up to my hips.  My book was already out from the night before so all I had to do was turn on my lamp.  I read until the words started to blend together and everything became hazy. The next time I looked at my clock it was 8:57, and I decided that it was time I hit the hay. I put my book down, turn my lamp off and pulled my covers up to my shoulders and laid on my side, thinking about what kind of day tomorrow at school was going to be. I shut my eyes and was out like a rock.

I woke up around six, and jumped out of bed. I had gotten my full nine hours of sleep and was ready to start my day. I walked over to my laptop and checked the weather. 43 degrees?! It shouldn't have came as such a shock to me since it was Wisconsin, and the weather is so bipolar here, but somehow I wasn't ready for it to be this cold.  I walked to the bathroom, and took a shower.

As I was standing under the warm water, shampooing my hair, I started thinking about Jackson and the coffee shop yesterday.  How did he know my number? I couldn't decide if I was creeped out of flattered.  Once I realized that my head was numb forms scrubbing it so and that it was time I got out, I also realized that I had to endure a full week of school with seeing him in it.  I didn't know how much longer I could take secretly pining over him while he doesn't even have any clue. It was exhausting and taking a toll on my mind and relaxing showers. I shut the water off, grabbed my two towels and through my hair up in one and dried my body with the other. I then grabbed my white robe and wrapped it around me so I could walk back to my room without freezing. I sat down at my desk and pulled my hair out of it's towel so it could air dry a little bit. I put my moisturizer on my face and then moved to my eyeshadow. I through on a neutral color, and then put my councilor on under my eyes and around my nose to cover my dark circles and redness. I set it all with my powder and then curled my eye lashes and put on my mascara. I was blessed with the long eyelashes from my dad, and my deep dark brown eyes from my mom. I personally thought they looked like a pile of dog shit but my mom loved them because she knew that I was her daughter.  I went to my closet and looked at it. Everything was so neutral and bland. As I looked at my shorts hanging up, I knew that I was on the wrong end of my closet. I looked over to my right which had all of my fall and winter clothes and started looking there. I pulled out my favorite pair of skinny jeans that were the perfect shade of blue. Light, but not almost white. I looked in the middle where all my sweaters were hanging. None of them were what I was in the mood for wearing today. I pulled out my cranberry colored flannel that was girly, but relaxed looking and thought it was good enough. I pulled out my white colored pullover sweater and decided I was going put it over the flannel. I put on my undergarments first and then put on my jeans, and realized that next time, I shouldn't put them in the dryer. I threw on a cami, and then my flannel and put the sweater on over it so the collar and bottom of sleeves were peeking through it. I walked back to my desk and stared at my hair. I was halfway air dried and it's usually wavy self. I pulled out my small clip and clipped it half up and hair down. I went to my dresser and opened up the top drawer, and pulled out my gray and white polk a dot pair of socks. I pulled out my brown riding boots and zipped them up. There, at least I was dressed and ready to conquer the day. The clock read 7:29. I spritzed a little perfume and another layer of deodorant just in case.  I grabbed my keys on top of my dresser and my backpack and headed out the garage door. I opened up the door to my bronze colored chevy cruse and got in the drivers seat. I slammed the door, buckled up and put the key in the ignition. The engine roared to life and I was on my way to school.

I parked my car and got out of of seat. I opened up the door behind me, where the passengers would usually sit in the back, and grabbed my backpack. I shut the door and pressed the lock button on my key set and started walking into school. As I was halfway up the side walk about to enter the school I heard, "EMMA! WAIT UP!" I turned around and saw Sadie speed walking/sprinting up behind me. She was wearing a cute sweater and a scarf and her favorite pair of jeans as well as her own riding boots. Her hair was in a cute side braid and she looked better than I did, as usual.

"Hey" I smiled at her

She smiled back at me then examined my outfit, and then frowned a little bit.

"Is it dress like your teacher day?" She grabbed the collar of my flannel and pulled it and then let it go and chuckled.

I flattened the end so it wasn't sticking out and then flattened my sweater to make sure all the wrinkles were out.

"Is it really that bad?" I moaned and looked at her and continued to walk into school. I grabbed the handle of the doors to the side entrance of the school and held the door open for her. She smiled at me and walked ahead of me through the door and then held the next door open for me. As I walked past her she cleared her throat and then caught up to me.

"No, I mean you can pull it off...but next time...maybe just go with something...flirtier?" she tried to give me a nicer friendly look.

"Oh yeah, because I flirt with so many people" I rolled my eyes.

"All I'm saying is you'll never get Jacksons attention if you dress like you are the substitute teacher." she laughed

"Hey! I am not dressed like that!....am I?" I looked at her and then my outfit

"On the plus side, if you were his substitute teacher, I'm sure he'd be more than happy for you to help him after school study sessions if you know what I'm saying" she nudged her elbow at me a few times then winked. We both laughed and walked through the hallways to our lockers. She grabbed the books she needed from hers and I did the same for myself.

School flew by that day, unusually and I didn't have any run-ins with Jackson. I didn't know if I was relieved or sad. I walked to my car, and started it and slowly backed out and was on my way to head back to my house.

It was about 15 minutes later and I was driving when my car started to make a dinosaur noise when I pressed the breaks.

"What the hell?" I mumbled to myself. I pushed the gas and the same noise came out of the engine again.  I put on my hazards so cars would knew that it wasn't my decision my car was stuck going 30 mph in a 60 mph zone. I pulled over to the side of the road and popped open my hood and then got out. I walked over, opened up my hood all the way and immediately started coughing because of all they dark grey smoke I just inhaled. I took one of my hands and waved it back in forth while taking my elbow and coughed into that one. I looked around me and saw a black truck driving up towards me. Crap, i recognized that sticker on the front windshield. I immediately ran and hid behind my car by the passenger side door so he couldn't see me. I heard the truck pull up behind my car and the car door open. It slammed and foot steps started getting closer to me.

"Emma?" I heard his voice say. I heard a little grin in his face.

"Hey Jackson. Funny bumping into you here" I smiled trying to sound casual.

"Are you okay?...Why were you hiding behind your car?" He looked around my car and then at me.

"My car started making these weird noises, so I pulled over to check it out. I saw a car coming and decided to hide in case a random person tried to ubduct me...." I talked to fast I couldn't even make out what I just said.

"I don't think you have to worry about being ubducted in Wisconsin...but are is your car alright?" He smiled at me the walked over to the hood and took a look himself.

I stood up and walked over next to him so I was standing next to him, but behind him still. My arms were crossed and I was freezing. I went to the passenger side door and grabbed my black North Face jacket I got for christmas last year and put it up and zipped it up to keep me warm.

"Do you know what's wrong with it?"  I said walking up to him while shoving my hands in my pockets.

"I hate to say it, but your car is done." He looked at me

"Done? Like dead, as in...no more?" I said freaking out. He nodded at me and then closed the hood.

"Oh my god. What am I going to do!? I don't know when my parents are coming home, my dad will kill me if I use his car, and I live 30 minutes away from school! I am screwed!" I was pacing back and forth. Jackson walked up to me and stood right in front of me so I couldn't pace anymore.

"It's alright. My dad own's a towing company. I'll have him pick up your car free of charge and I can give you a ride back to your house if you want...?" He looked down at the ground when he said that then up at me. He was taller than me, so his face was a mere 7 inches away from mine but holy hell it felt like my heart was a sledgehammer.

"Oh, no. You don't have to do that. I live 20 minutes away and it's rush hour so I won't get home for a while. Plus we're supposed to get rain and it might freeze. I'll just call Sadie and ask her if I can stay there." I started pulling out my phone and pulling up my contact list to call Sadie when Jackson put his hand over my hand/phone gently and stopped me.

"Emma, stop. You can stay at my house until rush hour is over. Then I'll drive you home." he smiled at me and started walking to his truck.

"But don't you live on the other side of town from me? That's like a 50 minute drive. I don't want to put you through all that trouble." I said walking slowly to his car.

"It's fine. I don't mind driving and I just wanna make sure you get home safe." He said smiling at me. He walked over to his passenger side door and opened it up and made gesture for me to get it. I smiled at him and rolled my eyes. I quickly ran over to my car to grab my backpack first so I could do my homework. I sped walked over back to his car so he wouldn't have to wait long. I wasn't used to being in a car that was so high up, so it was new for me to have to hoist myself up into his seat. He shut the door and then jogged over to the other side, got it easily and shut his door. We both buckled up at the same time. He started the car and the Star Country radio station started playing and he turned it down.

"Sorry, I liked to listen to music while I drive" he gave a cute small smile at me.

I decided to be bold, and reached over and turned it up slightly and then smiled back at him.

"Its okay. I love country." I watched him and he put his car in reverse and spread out is free hand put it behind the my headrest so he could see as he backed up slightly so he could do a quick 180 and start going back the other way. When we were on the road he had one had casually on the top of the wheel and the other resting on the side of the door that had all of the window controls. I had mine folded in my lap and I was looking out the window. I cleared my throat and decided to be bold again and start a conversation.

"So, if you live on the other side of town, why were you going up this way?" I asked still looking out the window.

"My dad's company works up here. I was on my way to work but decided to stop to help a damsel in distress."

I wasn't looking at his face but I could tell he had a smirk on his.

"You're missing work for this? Crap. I'm so sorry. You didn't have to do this. Turn around. I'll just wait by my car and have Sadie pick me up. Rea-"

"Emma" Jackson said sternly and I looked over at him.

His face was so serious and then he smiled and looked over at me again.

"It's really no problem. I'm actually relieved I don't have to go to work now. I haven't had a Monday off in ages" his eyes were back on the road.

"Well, then in that case, you're welcome" I smiled at him. He looked at me and laughed

"Yes, thank you Emma for pulling over of the side of road and taking me back to my house-oh wait...that's me helping you. So really, I should be saying you're welcome."

I rolled my eyes and smirked while looking out the window

"I know you just rolled your eyes at me" he said and we made eye contact again.

"How'd you know?" I asked

"I know you better than you think" he winked at me and then laughed.

He turned on his right blinker and we pulled onto a small backroad.  A few houses later and we were pulling into his driveway. Two garage doors were shut and he pulled into the third one that was open. He put his car in park and unbuckled quickly. He sped walked over to my side and opened my door before I even finished getting unbuckled.

"Thanks" i smiled shyly at him

"No problem." he said

I walked behind him as he led me into his house from the door his his garage and stood inside. I was in Jackson Reeder's house. I have dreamt of this day since I was a junior and have, I mean had a huge crush on him. Now I am here and don't know what to do with myself.

"Are you just going to stand there like a statue?" he asked while he took off his shoes and walked through the kitchen.

I followed his lead, and unzipped my boots and set them next to his shoes. I walked behind him and walked through his kitchen.

"Are both your parents working?" I asked to find out of we were in his house alone

"Yeah, my moms a nurse so they usually come home around the same time or she comes home a little earlier" he walked over to a set of stairs that let upwards. We were alone, in his house. My heart started beating faster than it did before. I might go into cardiac arrest. Still following his lead I walked behind him as we went upstairs.  He led me to a door and opened it and made a gesture with is arm for me to go first. I walked into the room and saw it was his bedroom. It was surprisingly clean. I

 I WAS IN JACKSONS BEDROOM.

"It's um, really clean." I said unsure of what to say. He left the door open behind and walked over to his desk and grabbed a few books and his laptop.

"Yeah, my mom likes my room clean. She always says, "You never know when we'll have unexpected visitors" which for once she is right because you came here and that was very unexpected." He looked over his shoulder at me and gave me a cute grin with two dimples.

I chuckled and folded my arms over my chest again still standing near his doorway. My backpack was super heavy which only reminded me that I had a lot of homework I needed to do that night.

"Ready?" he asked me walking out of his room

"Ready? F-for w-what?" I had no idea what the hell was going to happen but I was going to say yes.

"To do homework...? You do your homework, right?" he looked at me confused.

"Of course. Every night. I just, well, don't take this the wrong way, but I wasn't expecting you to say that to me." I said giving him a nice, generous grin.

"Well, I knew you're really into school so I thought we could do our homework together so you wouldn't be all alone."he said leading me to another room down stairs on his main floor. Jackson knew I was really into school? Maybe he did know me. And he didn't want me to be alone. That was sweet of him. Or maybe he thought I had a creepy crush on him and if he left me alone I would try to go into his room and steal a pair of his underwear and smell it when he left the room. Let's hope it's the first one. We walked into another room that had two couches and a coffee table and lamps. He sat on one couch and I sat on the other.

"You don't have to sit over there Emma. I'm not going to bite." he laughed and then scooted over so I could sit on the same couch as him.

"Yeah, I know, haha" I laughed actually saying the word 'haha'. God, I was a freak.

"Don't worry. I'm not going to put any moves on you either" he winked at me.

"Of course you're not" I whispered to myself.

"Huh?" he asked, stopping mid way of opening up his notebook.

"Nothing" I smiled at him.

I sat down on the other end and set my backpack down and unzipped it. I pulled out my English notebook and started working on my rough draft that was due next week Friday. I kept sneaking peeks at Jackson as we worked. He was so focused on homework that his eyebrows were permentley knitted together I thought. I smiled to myself and went back to writing my paper.  I yawned to myself as I was writing and then looked up at Jackson realizing that I distracted him. I looked at him, grinned and then shrugged my shoulders indicating that I was sorry. He smiled and shook his head back and forth. The fact that I was in Jackson's house doing homework, sitting on the SAME couch as him was crazy enough for me to believe I was dreaming. Or maybe I was drugged this morning somehow at school. I was hoping it was neither of those two options. Half an hour passed by and my eyelids were heavy. I looked at Jackson writing away and then closed my eyes. 'Ten seconds I told myself, thats it.' And just like that, I was out cold.
