Chapter One

“Hey babe,” Camila, Mila’s best friend of nine years, called. Mila glanced over her shoulder and waved.

“Cam, what’s up?” Mila asked.

So far, Mila’s day was pretty crappy. She couldn’t understand what the point of school was, especially teachers. Mrs. Reed, her English teacher, assigned her class a four-page essay because one kid was late. What the heck does that teach anybody?

“I’m getting a ride of Rico, I’m not sure how much I can handle his flirting but his rides are definitely appreciated.” Camila grinned. Mila shook her head.

“The poor boy looks love-sick. You’re being mean,” Mila scolded. Camila laughed.

“I can’t help my good looks, plus, I’ve already reminded him a hundred times that I’m not interested; it’s his fault whether or not he listens.”

“Whatever. Anyways, I’m off to the library – Mrs. Reed assigned us an essay.”

          Cam grimaced, “Another one?”

“Yeah, I swear, sometimes I just want to throw her off a plane or something.” Mila growled.

Camila laughed. “Seriously? Where does a plane come in? And don’t growl – you sound like an angry puppy, it’s an oxymoron – it doesn’t work.”

          “That’s not an oxymoron-”

“Just don’t do it,” Cam waved her hand in the air, ignoring her comment.

They were now at the entrance of the school and Rico pulled up by the sidewalk, urging Camila forward with his head. He noticed Mila and waved. Mila waved back and looked at Cam.

“How about we do something this Saturday?” Mila asked.

Camila nodded. “Sounds perfect, I’ll get my dad to lend me the car, he won’t need it; I’m sure.” She paused. “I’ll see you later then.”

“Bye,” Mila grinned, shoving Cam lightly toward Rico’s car. She looked up at the sky and sighed, hoping it wouldn’t rain for a few more hours. “Stupid English teacher.”

She started her thirty minute walk to the local library, praying that the sky wouldn’t suddenly open up and drop buckets of rain on her, with that thought in mind, she quickened her step. The rain could wait for a few moments, Mrs. Reed would not.

She was nearing the library when she heard a yell and shout, she didn’t stop to investigate, thinking of the movies where the girls always get killed from their naïve curiosity. Mila was not going to be like that, not today.

She finally could see the entrance of the Stanford Library, the soft lights outlining the structure of the building. She was happy that it was open; the darn essay was due tomorrow.

“Ms. Benedict, nice to see you again,” Mrs. Laura Woods, the library caretaker, grinned.

Mila smiled, “Hey, Laura, unfortunately, this time it’s not voluntary.”

“Oh, well you know what to do should you need anything,” Mila nodded distractedly and walked away. She wanted to get this darn thing finished before five p.m. She’d have to pick up Pax, her little brother, from next door and feed him. Hopefully her mother would have made something this time.

She wandered all the way to the back – her favorite spot – and logged on to the dinosaur-old computer, setting out her materials so she could get started.

She glanced at the topic: What do you plan to do for the rest of your life?

Mila had to admit, although Mrs. Reed was terrifyingly strict, she did give good topics. Thankfully, Mila knew everything she wanted, she had planned it out four years prior – making sure her life was absolutely in check; wanting the best not only for herself but for Pax’s future.

She had gotten into the essay writing so much that she had lost track of time, she had a moment to pause and glance up. She was surprised to see how vacant it was.

          Where was everybody? She wondered.

She got up and looked around her area – still nobody. She sat back down and looked at the computer time: 9:27p.m.

“Oh my god,” she uttered. She leaped to her feet, suddenly forgetting about her essay. She quickly pressed save and ripped the USB drive and stuffed everything in her backpack. She rushed to the front and unceremoniously bumped into Laura.

          “I’m sorry.”

She didn’t stop to say more – she had to pick up Pax! How could she have lost track of time like this? She should’ve paid more attention! Ugh. Stupid English essay!

As soon as she stumbled outside she quickly walked down the street to her house. In her haste to get home she completely forgot she was taking the back street to her house – the street where criminals lingered. But she couldn’t stop now; she was already a quarter mile in.

“Damn it. Damn it. Damn it,” she muttered.

This really wasn’t her day, she’d completely lost it. She imagined herself relaying the story to Camila – if she made it to her house alive. She heard raucous laughter and jumped, startled by the sound. She really needed a car. She’d have to get a way to purchase one, that way she wouldn’t end up in a situation like this.

Her mind wondered to her unfinished essay and sighed in defeat – she would get to school early tomorrow and used the library to finish it. She suddenly wished she had just left it be. No essay was worth this.

Another bout of laughter erupted, closer this time than the last. Mila spared a glance over her shoulder and narrowed her eyes. A group of people were closing in on her. She panicked. Were they following her?

“Shoot,” she murmured, trying to find a way to avoid the group. She glanced the side and caught side of a small alley way. She made her way, hopefully inconspicuous, to the other side. She waited for what seemed like eternity.

Oh god, if I get out of this alive, I promise – I’ll finish my essay; I really will. I promise. I’ll even stop messing with Mr. King, but you have to admit, God, he is very amusing, especially when he snaps at people for-

She shook her head and clenched her fists and opened her closed eyes. Explaining to God about this would have to wait another time or else she’d fall into hysteria.

Were they gone? She strained her ear to listen to anymore laughter or noise that might show where the group was. She decided she could wait a few more minutes; she was already late to pick up Pax a few more minutes wouldn’t hurt. When she was certain they had to have passed the small alley she moved from her spot. She dusted her jeans and started forward.

“Gotchya.” A man popped from nowhere, it seemed, and shoved himself right into her.

Mila let out a scream and tried to throw her arms in front of her, hoping to push the man away. To no avail; strong arms wound around her, keeping her arms by her side.

“Well look at what I found!” the bald-headed man exclaimed excitedly. Mila struggled under his grip and let out small whimpers.

“’Ey, Slim, you caught a mighty fine one this time.” another man came, he was burly and when he smiled some teeth showed missing. Mila cringed slightly. This wasn’t good.

“Whadda ya say we do?” Slim asked. Mila struggled again.

“Please, let me go. I have no money, I swear.” Mila pleaded, how was it that she constantly found herself in horrible situations? “My d-dad’s a cop, he’ll find me; you better let me go!”

The men laughed, obviously not believing her lie. Mila felt adrenaline course through her at the sick laughter. She pushed her arms out and Slim cried out in surprise. She kicked the man and swung her backpack, hoping it would have an effect.

Her arms swung around her as she tried to effortlessly defend herself from the inevitable. She kicked, scratched, screamed, punched, she did everything she could.

Suddenly a large hand swung and made impact with her face. Mila’s hands cupped her face in astonishment. The big man had punched her! He punched a girl!

She was left on the floor, groaning from the stinging pain. She tried to get up but a foot stepped on her hand that laid beside her head, she cried out again.

What kind of monsters were these? She kept on squirming, struggling under the force. She couldn’t let this happen! This wasn’t happening.

“Let’s see what ya got under these, eh?” Hands flew to her top, pushing it up; exposing her skin. Suddenly it hit her like an ice block of what they were going to do to her.

“Help! Somebody, please help me!” She screamed. She moved her other hand to fight the man groping her, she fought tirelessly – not willing to give up, not letting herself give up. She felt another punch to her temple and her vision blacked out.

“What’s going on here?!” a voice, from behind the man on top of her, demanded. Mila sucked in a breath, this could possibly be help!

“Ah, Scuro, come join us!” the burly man called.

Mila felt herself go cold. This was no help; this was another one of them. Tears suddenly pinched her eyes. She wasn’t getting out of this. There would be no escape.

“Move.” The man said softly, so soft that Mila could barely hear him. She shut her eyes tight and chanted softly in her head; please let this be help, please.

“C’mon Bourne, stop playing.” the burly guy whined, his foot eased on her hand, but not enough to move it.

          “I’m not repeating myself.”

The burly man’s voice abruptly became cold. “This isn’t your problem,”

          “It is now.”

“There’s two of us; one of you, who do you think is gonna win?” Slim snickered.

The man with the calm voice, Seb, didn’t seem phased by the enemy. “Why don’t we find out?”
