2. Deaf vs. Hearing

***This is a poem I wrote for an assignment for my ASL class last year.  I'm not deaf, but I take on the perspective of a deaf person for this poem.  Hope you enjoy it and maybe it gives you a little bit of understanding about the deaf community and what they go through. :)***

What are you saying?

I can't hear you.

What am I saying?

You can't read me.

I'm not stupid, I'm not dumb.

Soon you'll learn I'm not the only one.

Life is tough, no matter who you are.

And just because I'm deaf doesn't mean I can't go far.

You have friends, you have fun;

I have friends, I have fun.

I may be different, you may think me strange.

But please don't ever ask me to change.

I don't use my voice, but you don't understand--

I do talk:  I talk with my hands.

Is there something about communicating this way

That makes you think I have nothing to say?

I'm not stupid, I'm not dumb.

You have to know I'm not the only one.

What are you saying?

I can't hear you.

What am I saying?

You don't read me.
