12. Menace

Justin's POV

I tugged on my hair as I looked over at Flynn. He was still sleeping, his face barely visible from the mass of sheets covering his face.

I grinned faintly, before burying my head in my hands once more. I started sobbing, the feeling of guilt getting the better of me.

That’s it. Im going to tell Jessica.

My thoughts were interrupted by the squeak of my bedroom door opening. I looked over at Dav who was cautiously walking into the room, his hands behind his back.

‘What?!’ I whispered, looking at him with furrowed eyebrows.

‘I have something for you.’ He said, throwing a white envelope at me.

I caught it and looked at it with wide eyes.

Legal Guardianship Council

Jay Mallette

IPV Lofts

Inman Village Parkway Northeast, Atlanta GA.

I quickly ripped open the envelope and look out the letter, reading the letter quickly.

Mr. Jay Mallette,

We have read your reference letter and are pleased with the context. We are happy to tell you that we all have agreed to for you Legal Guardianship over Flynn Hales.

No court case or house inspection is needed, as your clean record and good appearance and dedication has made up for it.

Yours sincerely,

Council of Legal Guardianship

Robert

I smiled at the letter, nodding at it absent-mindedly, before slipping it back into the envelope.

I grinned, before standing up and walking towards the bedroom door. With one look back at Flynn, he walked out.

He faced Dav who was leaning on the kitchen counter, drinking a beer, and gave him the letter.

'What was it about?' He asked, looking at it with furrowed eyebrows.

'It’s from the legal guardianship council, they said I'm eligible and that I'm not Flynn’s guardian.'

'Woah man, that's good to hear.' He said, placing the letter on the counter.

'Yeah,' I replied, 'it also means I can go back to Canada.'

'Oh yeah. I bet after a year you'd be declared dead or missing. They must've realized you're gone. But what about Arden?' He said. A frown twisted my lips, and I looked down.

'I don't know. I hate her but she's carrying my baby…’

'Have you told Jessica?'

'No.... I don't have the guts and... I want to tell her face-to-face.'

'Oh. Well how about this? You go back sometime this week, tell Jessica see what her reaction is, stay in contact with Arden and when she has the baby, go take a paternity test.' He stated simply, shrugging.

'Hey that's a great idea!' I said. 'But Flynn doesn't have a passport.' I said, frowning again.

'We can get him one.' He shrugged again.

'Alright. I better book the flight.' I said, biting down on my bottom lip.

Dav nodded, and disappeared into the bathroom. I grinned at the thought of finally seeing Zachary and Jessica.

I ran towards my bedroom and opened the door slightly, looking in to see Flynn still sleeping. I tip-toed towards my Macbook, and took it in my hands, before walking back out.

I placed it on the coffee-table in the open living room I had, before typing in a travel website URL into the appropriate bar.

I typed up the flight I wanted to take (Atlanta, GA to Toronto), how many people I was bringing and which class. I couldn’t afford anything other then economy.

When I booked the flight, I closed the lid of my laptop and lay back on the couch, a satisfied grin on my face.

 Jessica’s POV

‘Ok, milk, eggs, formula, canned baby-food…’ I mumbled to myself, while holding Zach’s hand and walking around the grocery-store, pushing the shopping cart with my other hand.

When I reached the cool section, I found the milk and eggs. I wandered off to the baby-food section and found what else I needed.

When everything off my list was mentally crossed off, I went to the check-out.

‘That’d be $96 thanks.’ Said the boy who was standing behind the counter, looking about 17 years-old.

I gave him the money, and held the straps of the shopping bags, placing them back in the cart. I turned around to receive the last bag, but it wasn’t there.

I looked over at Zach, who was holding it out to me. I smiled at him and took the bag, shaking my head in disbelief.

I took a hold of Zach’s hand again, and took him to the parking-lot, where we reached our car. I strapped him into his seat and put all the shopping into the boot.

I went around to the driver’s seat and got in, leaning back in my seat and closing my eyes for a brief moment. I never get to relax these days.

I open my eyes and look over at Zach through the rear-view mirror. he was playing with a small can.

‘Zach, where did you get that from?’

‘Sops.’ He replied.

‘Out of my bag?’

‘No, the self.’ He replied.

(I’m not missing out the ‘h’ by accident.)

‘Zach!’ I said, un-buckling my seat-belt and twisting around fully, taking the can from his small hands.

‘You can’t take things from the shop without telling mommy, ok?’ I say, thinking about how my son just stole something.

‘Yes mommy.’ He said quietly, looking out the window.

I sighed, and put the can in the cup-holder, before pushing the key into the ignition. Zach just stole something.
