When the war had ended, we thought all was done

What do you do when you've spent the last five years of your life fighting for freedom and suddenly everything stops, the tyrants are dead and the revolution has won?

Write, you might say, but the restoration of the country to it's former glory in the elder days of the King is not going to be as easy as they thought. Especially when the new king is not all he seems to be.

9. Chapter 8

(*Mina's POV*)

I breathed in the cool night air as I walked along a winding path through a sparse forest as the moonlight shined through the leaves. I traced my hand along the trunk of the white bark of a birce tree, as I entered my destination, a hidden clearing that you could only find if you knew where it was. I found this place when exploring the forest behind my first Library.

I kicked my shoes off to explore the grass with my toes. Soft green blades, bending at my touch, My dark hair spread out as I lay down on the grass, gazing up into the stars, twinkling lights sprayed randomly across a pitch black canvas.

A red spark flied into the sky, exploding and bathing the forest below in red, smaller red sparks floated down to the ground. I sat up immediately, alert. A signal flare could mean only one thing. Someone was in desperate need of help, but who?

I pulled myself up, slipping my shoes back on and ran into the trees in the direction of the flare. It surprised me that someone had a flare in the first place, so if it wasn't an emergency it was worth looking into anyway.

An empty plain was all I found after what seemed like hours, except for a single tree standing in the centre. Confused, I looked around, thinking maybe I'd gone to the wrong place when a glint caught my eye. I turned to find it was coming from the tree. I ran over excitedly and inspected the trunk, looking for the object. It was a pen, pinning a note into the trunk. Whoever had written this had been in a hurry- the writing was scrawled and messy, yet slightly familiar.

The sound of someone clearing their throat made me jump and spin around to find a girl standing behind me. Blonde hair fell down to a blue top with a dragon on it.

"Did you set off the red sparks?" she asked. I shook my head.

"I was about to ask you the same thing? I saw them and went to find the source. I suppose that was what you did?"

She nodded, holding out her hand. "I'm Soul, by the way".

I shook it. "Mina. Can you read this?" I handed her the note. She frowned as she read.

"There's something here about- 'capture', no- 'captured'. And I think that says 'library', but I'm not sure. The next part is about a 'blue covered book with no title that contains ev-everything'? I don't know. And below it is the word 'rusty'. But it doesn't say what is rusty"

"Rusty!" I gasped. "No, Rusty is a friend of mine. Pass the paper!" No wonder the writing was familiar!

"So Rusty is the one who has the blue book?"

"I suppose, but that would mean he's also been..." my voice faltered "captured. This must be mistaken surely!" I scanned the writing, but it looked as though Soul hadn't misread a single word.

Who could have done this? I put the pen in my pocket hurriedly and prepared to leave the plain, when out of the corner of my eye I noticed a hole in the ground. Large enough for a person to fit through, but small enough to not be seen easily.

Peering into it I could see light shining so I ducked inside to explore. Torches lined the walls of the cobblestone tunnels. Thorny bushes were strewn across one point in the tunnel, delaying anyone who decided to enter the tunnels depths. Had Rusty come from in the tunnels? Or had he evaded his captor down in the tunnels and was now wondering the tunnels unforgiving depths, lost? I pushed the thought out of my mind, it was unlikely that Rusty would've been willing to jump into the unknown being the cautious calculating person he is, but who knows how desperate he might have been.

"What's- where are you going?" called Soul from above. I turned back towards her

"To find this blue book. Coming?"
