What is on the other side of your window?

2. Night

When Emily came home from her first day at her new school, I couldn't have been happier. She said it was great, and she made a lot of new friends, and her teacher was the best. Everything seemed perfect, and so it was for another few weeks. Every day she would come home with an interesting story of how her day went. Something new each time. I swear, that kid has more life in her than the whole school combined.

That night, I tucked Emily into bed. I read her the same story I've been reading her for 2 years; "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". I don't know how she doesn't get tired of it. The way she finds it interesting is beyond me, but at least she's memorized all the lines and reads more of it than I do. And I guess its practice--even though she already knows what it says.

After she fell asleep, I got up slowly, kissed her in the forehead, and quietly made my way to her bedroom door. It opened with a low squeak as usual, and closed silently. I walked across the small hall to our room, opened the door, and walked in. I was greeted by my wife. I walked over to our bed and laid down. We said our good nights, kissed, and fell asleep. At least she got some sleep.

I woke up at around 12am. I had only slept 3 hours, and I couldn't go back to sleep. This heat was intense. It was the middle of summer, and I was wrapped up in a blanket for gods sake. After a while, I took off the blanket, got up, and walked to the screen door in our bedroom. Balconies. Nice. I opened the door, stepped out, and was hit with a burst of fresh night air. I felt so relaxed there. I started to think. Where was I going to get my job here? How much longer will my wife be able to work 2 part time jobs? Was this a good idea? The thoughts kept coming. It was nice to stand there alone, leaning against the cold metal railing that protected me from falling to the hard cement below.
