Learning to Trust

*Sequel to Different From the Rest*
Kady is grown up now. She is now eighteen, a far cry from fourteen. There is no One Direction, if you asked your kids about them they'd be like "are you high again?" Kady's stutter is long gone, but the fears from it will never surrender. Being alone, forgotten, useless. Mainly she can't trust, anyone, not others around her, not herself. She makes a mistake that can't be fixed, and must go on with her life. Kady has to learn that you must leave the past behind you before you can move forward and not all mountains can be moved. It's a bowl of cherries, with a few-no many, nuts thrown in.

11. Making That Promise

We all line up to walk down.  Each of the bridesmaids are paired with a groomsmen. My Maid of Honor, Peyton and Liam's Best Man, Niall are paired together. Liam is at the alter nervously rocking back and forth next to the priest. Guests pile into the church, and there's a knot in my stomach. Why couldn't this have been a private ceremony? Little booklets are being handed out, and I get even more nervous, everyone has something to remember this day by.
"You'll be fine, trust me," El says handing me a bouquet of perfectly arranged white flowers. I readjust my veil in nervousness. El grabs onto my shoulders and shakes me, "This will be the best day of your life Kady Brown."
I want to believe her, but what if I mess up and fall in front of everybody? I tuck my hair behind my ear and the music starts. The first two out are El and Lou, then Perrie and Zayn, Lena and Harry and so on. Liam has his back towards me so his face can't help me calm down. Everyone is looking at the back of the church where everyone is entering. They have their cameras out, I have had like a fear of cameras after London with Li when we were just kids. That was the trip when everyone found out we were dating. Samara and Emme throw flower petals onto the floor as Here Comes the Bride starts to play. That's my cue, don't screw up like you do with everything else. I put the bouquet between my two hands, I loop my arm around my stepfather Anthony's and I start to walk down. There are camera flashes and everyone marvels at my dress. My dress is stunning. I walk in the beat of the music like I'm supposed to. One, two, three, four. I smile, though I'm dying on the inside. Anthony looks at me with pleasure, but I pretend I don't see him. It's crazy to see my friends and family. I instantly spot my mom in the front row with Liam's family. I want to just sit down with them and watch a wedding, but I'm in it. The bridesmaids go to the left and stand, and the groomsmen go to the right and stand. The trail on my dress tickles the back of my legs. Thankfully, I haven't fallen over yet with the long dress and mid-high pumps. I hold my flowers a little tighter as I approach the alter. Liam's back is still turned and I just want to walk up to him and say it's okay. But, I still don't know if it'll be okay. After a what felt like a mile long walk, I'm up on the alter. Anthony is at the foot of it, why didn't I just keep clinging onto him? I hold both of Liam's hands as he looks me in the eye. I feel like crying right now, and I can see his eyes getting glassy.
"My friends, we are gathered here today to celebrate one of life's greatest moments, to give recognition to the worth and beauty of committed marital love, and to add our best wishes to the words which shall unite Liam and Kady in marriage," the priest says. Liam perks up when hears our names being said. He must see the uncertainty in me, so he gives me a grin and I can't help smiling like a looser.
"The commitment that the two of you are about to make is the most important commitment that two people can make, you are about to create something new, the marriage relationship, an entity that never ends. As you stand here today, are you now prepared to begin this commitment to one another?"
"I am," we reply in unison.
"Have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourselves to each other in marriage?"
"I have," I say first, and Li follows quickly.
"Liam and Kady , I would ask that you both remember to treat yourself and each other with dignity and respect; to remind yourself often of what brought you together today. Give the highest priority to the tenderness, gentleness and kindness that your marriage deserves. When frustration and difficulty assail your marriage - as these do to every relationship at one time or another - focus on what still seems right between you, not only the part that seems wrong. This way, when clouds of trouble hide the sun in your lives and you lose sight of it for a moment, you can remember that the sun is still there. And if each of you will take responsibility for the quality of your life together, it will be marked by abundance and delight," the priest says. I swallow a lump in my throat. I look over to El is on the side and she gives me a small smile and nods.
"Liam will you have this woman to be your wedded wife?"
 "I will."
"Will you love and comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others, keep yourself only unto her as long as you both shall live?"
"I will," he says and I feel like melting, it's just so much right now. I'm surprised I haven't broken down in tears yet.
"Since it is your intention to enter into marriage, join your right hands, and declare your consent by repeating after me:
I, Liam James Payne."
"I, Liam James Payne."
"take you Kady Madge Brown."
"take you Kady Madge Brown."
"to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward,"
"to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward."
"for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer."
"for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer."
" in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, as long as we both shall live."
"in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, as long as we both shall live," Liam says. Nicola's son who is four, comes running up with my ring. Li takes the ring and puts it around my finger. It's beautiful and it matches my engagement ring perfectly well. I can't stop staring at it. It must have costed a fortune.
"Kady, take this ring as a sign of my commitment and fidelity to you," he says with perfect words from his perfect lips. It's almost as if there isn't a ton of people watching, but there is.
"I, Kady Madge Brown take you Liam James Payne to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, as long as we both shall live," I can't believe the words coming out if my mouth, it is as if I know what I am doing. Liam's brown eyes gleam in response. Again, Nicola's son comes running up with my ring to Li. I take the ring off the pillow and I put it on his finger, "Liam, take this ring as a sign of my commitment and fidelity to you."
"Liam James Payne and Kady Madge Brown, in so much as the two of you have agreed to live together in Matrimony, have promised your commitment to each other by these vows, the joining of your hands and the giving of these rings, by the authority vested in me by the State of Rhode Island, I now pronounce you Husband and Wife. You may kiss your bride," uh oh, the dreaded words. Liam wraps his arm around my waist and pulls my veil out of the way. I stand on my tip toes, reaching for his mouth with mine. Everyone cheers, so I guess that's the end. I pull away first embarrassed.
"May I now present you Mr. and Mrs. Liam James Payne!" the priest says. I take his hand and we run/ skip to the back door and we go on the steps to talk to the guests.
"I love you so much Mrs. Payne," Liam whispers in my ear once we are outside.

Guests pile outside. The first ones to greet us are our parents.
"Take good care of her Liam," my mother says taking his hand between hers.
"Of coarse Ms. Brown," he says. Anthony is next and all he does is pat me on the back and says, "I feel like your my biological daughter Kady."
I don't know how to respond to that, so I smile and say thank you. Liam's parents are next and they're a little more heartwarming.
"Oh, Kady look at you, you are a fine young lady, and not because your next to my handsome son," she says with a laugh. Liam's face turns bright red, "Moooom."
"Thank you Mrs. Payne, but your son is the best I could ever have," I say giving Liam a hug.
"You know, your a Payne now, so I guess I like you better now," Mr. Payne says.
"Did you not like me before?"
"Don't ask questions you don't want to know the answer to," he says pinching my cheek.

After we finish talking to everyone, Liam and I go into a horse drawn carriage waiting for us to take us to the reception at the beach. Everyone else is already there. Liam lifts me up and drops me on the plush seat, "This will make you feel like a royal, flashback to London 2013."
I laugh at that silly memory, the day my life turned upside down.
