Broken (Harry Styles FanFic)

Part of me wanted to walk up to her and wrap her in my arms because as much as I hated her for making me feel this way; I also hated watching her cry. But the other part of me, the part that was build up with rage and pain, just wanted to walk away from all of this and never turn back.
I wasn't sure what part I wanted to listen to, so I just took a deep breathe trying to control my anger and took a few steps towards her. I tried my best not to hold her in my arms and whispered, “sometimes broken things can't be fixed, Monica.

Chapter 23

“Nicky are you going out today,” my dad asked.

I was sitting in the living room watching a spider walk across the table. I was choosing to ignore my dad. He has been asking me the same question for the past two weeks and I have been answering with the same answer everyday.

Instead I sighed and grabbed the rubber bad that was around my wrist. I scooted forward and began to hit the spider with he rubber band.

“Nicky,” my dad called from behind me, “are you listening to me?”

I nodded and then he walked closer to me.

“What are you doing,” he asked and I pulled the rubber band hitting the spider once more.

“I am slowly and painfully killing this spider,” I said.

“Nicky,” he yelled taking the rubber band away from me, “you need to get out of the house. Martha and I are a bit worried about you.”

“Why?” I asked. I mean I know I have been doing nothing but going to school and spending the rest of m day locked up in my room.

“Well all you do is listen to music in your room and you only come out of there to eat and apparently kill spiders now,” he said throwing his hands in the air.

“Dad I am fine,” I answered, “I am waiting on Bethy to tell me when I can start work. I talked to her last week and she said that she was going to let me know today, so I will be going out of the house.”

He rolled his eyes and said, “I meant you have to go out meet people and have some fun. Didn't you go out to that one club with Bethy last time. Why don't you go out with them again?”

“No I don't think I want to go back there,” I said.

Going back there would only bring back memories of Harry. That was where this all started. I wouldn't be having this conversation with my dad about me moping around if it wasn't for that night at the club.

“Does it have to do with that boy with the curls because Martha said that you guys were talking outside and ever since that day you seemed to be hiding out. Nicky if that boy is causing you problems then maybe he shouldn't be around you,” he said and for some reason I wanted to defend Harry. I wanted to tell him that he was wrong and that Harry was a good person, but the truth was that Harry was selfish.

Everything that Harry did was for his own selfish needs. He began to talk to me and sleep with me because he needed a distraction from still loving Monica. I couldn't deny that being with him masked the pain I was feeling from my mother's recent death, but it was different for me. I actually like Harry. I have always liked him and I think at first I was trying to convince myself that it was just sex, but I was wrong. To me it was more than just meaningless sex. I loved the way his curly hair covered my face as he hovered over me. The way my fingers trailed his skin and brushed along his nipples that I have grown so fond of. The little things he does while he lies in bed with me like look up at the ceiling and catch his breathe as he came down from that high we reached together.

It was always more than just sex to me and I think he knew that. I think he knew that I liked him and took advantage of that.

“Nicky did you hear me,” my dad said.

“Yea. Um sorry dad. I promise you that I am fine. I just haven't been feeling like going out these past two weeks,” I said.

My phone began to buzz and I looked at it not wanting to pick it up.

“Pick up you phone and try and have some fun Nicky,” my dad said before walking away.

I picked up my phone and looked at the caller ID. It was Bethany and I knew she was calling me to let me know about the job. I have been looking forward to this call all week and I was hoping that she was calling to give me some good news.

“Bethy please tell me you have good new,” I answered.

“I do actually and where have you been you don't stop by the cafe that often anymore,” she said.

“I've been studying,” I said.

“Right,” she said not convinced, “anyways so I talked to my manager and he said you can start tomorrow at 8am. I am not going to be there tomorrow because it's me day off, Keaton will be training you.”

“I need training on how to make coffee,” I asked.

“Yes trust me there is a whole process, but don't worry it's easy and Keaton is nice,” she said, “Well good luck I have to go because Scarlet is crying.”

“Right Scarlet I still can't believe you have a daughter,” I said, “well say hi to her to me and thank you so much Beth.”

“Your welcome,” she said and quickly hung up the call because Scarlet began to cry even louder.

I was so happy that I had a job now. This way I would be a lot more busy and maybe my dad would stop bugging me about going out.

I woke up at 7am to shower and get ready for work. I was nervous, but excited to finally have a job. I checked my outfit on my full body mirror about ten times and then changed it a couple more times. I wasn't sure what would be the appropriate attire for this job. They didn't have a uniform or anything which made it a lot harder for me to figure out what to wear. Bethany told me to wear something nice and casual and not slutty. I am not sure what nice and casual was but I tried my best by just wearing jeans and a black shirt. I wasn't really feeling colorful today.

My dad let me borrow his car so that I can drive to work since I was running late because I changed my outfit about fifty times.

When I walked in to the cafe there was already a line of people ordering there coffee.

There was a guy on the other side of the counter taking the orders and charging people. He had ocean blue eyes and dirty blonde hair. He was really cute and I wondered why I hadn't seen him in the cafe before.

“Good Morning,” he said to me smiling a pearly white smile, “I'll be right with you.”

I smiled and walked over to the counter, “Um actually I am here to work.”

“You're Nicollette,” he said surprised.

“Uh yea,” I answered.

“Sorry it's just i've seen you come in here before and I didn't know that you were the one that Beth was talking about,” he said.

I wasn't sure what he was trying to say, but I just brushed it off.

“Ok well I am suppose to find Keaton,” I said looking around.

“Well you found him,” he said throwing his hands in the air. He turned around and called someone to take over the counter as he made his way around it to meet me on the other side.

“You are Keaton,” I said. I was expecting someone older and less good looking.

“Yeah that's what my name tag say,” he said pointing at his name tag, “follow me.”

He walked around the cafe clearing the tables by putting the coffee mugs in a plastic bin. He was explaining to me the rules and policy's that the cafe had and what I should do if I am going to miss a day or going to be late. It was all common stuff any job would tell you about. When he finally cleared half of the tables in the cafe he stopped placing the bin on a table and handing me a cloth that he was using to wipe down the tables.

“For now you can wipe down the rest of the tables and put the coffee mugs and plate in this bin. When you are don you can go and take them to the back and wash them. If you have any questions just let me know. I was going to teach you how to make coffee and lattes and all that, but it is kind of busy this morning and I think it is because of those finals,” he said.

“Maybe some other time,” I said taking the towel and bin.

“Yeah,” he smiled and went back behind the counter.

He was really nice and very cute. I was glad that he was nice because I am not sure if I would be good with someone yelling at me and pressuring me to do work.

I began to clean up the tables and also try and be nice to customers as they tried to cram all of there notes into their brains for the exams. This is why I made sure to study all my notes at home weeks before the exams. I feel like I am ready for these exams and I think it is mostly because I've been using my studying to distract myself.

When I finished picking up the rest of the dishes from the tables I went to the back where Keaton told me and placed the bin of dishes in the sink. I began to wash them trying to do it as fast as possible so that I can go back out and clean the tables again because I know that there are more dirty dishes out there again.

“Having fun,” Keaton's voice scared me from behind making me drop a plate causing it to shatter all over the ground.

“I am so sorry,” I said staring down at the plate, “you can take that off my paycheck.”

“What paycheck. You are fired,” he said.

“But...I....I am –”

“Nicky I was kidding,” he said giving me that cute pearly white smile.

“That isn't funny,” I said throwing a towel at him.

He laughed, “You have to lighten up. How is it going for you so far?”

“Oh just dandy,” I said pointing down at the plate.

He bent down to pick up the broken pieces and I bent down to help him, “Don't worry about it. This happens to me at least twice a day.”

We both stood up quickly and as we stood up my head bumped into his.

“Ow,” I said, “I am so sorry.”

“Believe it or not this happens to me twice a day too. Only it's usually against the swinging door,” he said rubbing his head.

I laughed as I rubbed my head, then handed him the broken pieces so that he can throw them away.

“Alright well when you are done washing those dishes you can go ahead and take a lunch,” he said.

I nodded then went back to washing the dishes.

After what seemed hours of dish washing; I finally finished and took off the apron that I was wearing. I stepped outside of the backroom ready to have my relaxing lunch...or not.

There at the counter stood Harry. His tall lean figure was impossible to miss and I knew that this can only mean trouble. I stood there emotionless staring at him as he ordered. His eyes were looking down at his wallet and I prayed that he wouldn't notice me standing there.

“Nicky,” Keaton called me from across the cafe.

I turned to look at Keaton and then back at Harry. His green eyes met mine and I immediately felt my heart race. My palms began to sweat and all I wanted to was run away from here.

“Hey are you going to lunch,” Keaton asked me. He was now standing in front of me and staring at me with those cute ocean blue eyes.

I looked at him thankful that he snapped me out of this trance that was Harry.

“Uh yeah I am,” I answered.

“Great let's go together. I'll buy,” he said.

I smiled at him and said, “Yeah sure.”

We walked together passing right by Harry and I glanced up at him ignoring the fact that he was staring at me.

Keaton and I reached the door and Harry's voice filled the room, “Nico.”

I stopped taking in a deep breathe and slowly turned around.

“You are not going to say hello,” he asked.

“Hi Harry,” I said then turned around and walked out the door without looking back.

It took everything in me not to yell at him or let down the water works. All I did was just smile and show him that he hasn't broken me, yet, not completely at least.

“You know Harry,” Keaton asked me as we walked down the street.

“Sort of,” I answered.

“Well that's interesting,” he said.

I laughed then said, “Let's just go get some lunch.”
