A Collection of Short Stories

This is for the times when I think of an idea, that doesn't quite expand enough to make a full Movella.

8. I Know What You Are

"I know what you are." A voice whispers in Carrie's ear.

"Excuse me?" Carrie turns around in her seat to see Kyle watching her.

"I know what you are." He repeats.

"Congratulations. You can tell what a human is when you see one." Carrie said, turning back round, good mood having disappeared completely.

"You're not a human." Kyle says plainly.

"I don't know what you're talking about." Carrie continues to face the front, her face set in a blank expression.

"Carrie, don't lie, I know what you are and you can't hide it forever." Kyle is silent for a moment, "I'll tell everyone."

Carrie flinches, "You wouldn't dare."

"Ah. So you are different. If you weren't, then you wouldn't have flinched." Kyle says triumphantly.

"You have no proof." Carrie replied.

Kyle is silent again, until the bell rings and everyone begins to leave the classroom.

"I'll find proof." He mutters in her ear as he joins the flow to get outside.

Carrie stays, frozen on her seat. Her heart is thumping in her chest and her blood runs cold. She feels a tremor flow over her body and shivers. It's time. Without warning, she springs out of her seat and runs down the corridor to get to the forest. She doesn't even pick up her bag.

The forest floor is cold beneath her feet. She slips on the mud that is squelching beneath every footfall, it sprays up her legs. She doesn't care. She hears their voices, crying through the night. She skids to a stop, tips her head back and responds to their cries. She hears an answer not long after she has lowered her head again. She jumps over the fallen tree in front of her, and picks up her pace when a fourth voice joins in with the others. She has to reach them before the night is over, as she knows that she will not find some of them after this night. Including him. Including the one who waits for her. She spots their large bodies through the trees, and a burst of energy sends her forwards. She crashes into him, the one she came for, and gently noses his face. He licks her in return. The others all press round them, encasing them in a group hug. Her mouth is full of his fur and her eyes are stinging from the mud that sprayed into them. Her nose is overwhelmed by their scent, the wet, earthy scent of the forest and the hot, musky scent of them. The group separates, and almost as if they are telepathic, they tip their heads back simultaneously and howl into the night. Everyone knows when the wolves are together.

"Where have you been?" Kyle spits in Carrie's face, barely a second after she has crossed the threshold to their Biology classroom.

"None of your business." Carrie snaps, pushing her way to her seat.

Kyle follows her all the way to her table and takes up the normal empty seat beside her.

"What do you think you're doing?" Carrie asks crossly.

"Sitting here." Kyle replies as if it is the most obvious thing in the world. "I'm suspicious of you. You disappear the same time each month- it's always the first ten days. And you're always gone for exactly ten days, reappearing on the eleventh of each month. Your house is right next to the forest and you always smell of the forest when you come back."

"So?" Carrie's heart begins to beat faster. "Have you been stalking me?"

"No, it's just so obvious. Show me. Go on. After this lesson, show me what you are." Kyle says, determined to get the truth out of her.

"Fine. But you will be disappointed."

Carrie turned away from him, trying to kick her brain into concentrating on the enzymes that her teacher was talking about.

Carrie crossed her arms, glaring at Kyle who was watching her with a smirk on his face.

"Go on then." He said.

"I can't. I can't do it at will." Carrie told him.

"Yes you can."

"Nope, sorry, not going to happen."

"Do it." Kyle said stubbornly.

"I can't! Okay, Kyle, I can't do it at will!" Carrie cried in frustration.

He glared at her. "So tell me what you are."

"What do you think I am?" She said, beginning to walk towards the forest, she didn't want to be seen standing around with Kyle.

"Werewolf." He says, as plain as if he was telling her what pet he had.

Carrie pursed her lips, giving a curt nod. She could hardly believe that he had guessed it. She had gone all her life without anyone knowing and now that was ruined.

"Who else knows?" Kyle asked, smiling that he had guessed it right.

"Nobody." Carrie replies, Kyle raises his eyebrows. "Well, okay, my carers know, but that's all."

"My parents died when I was seven." She gulped nervously. "I killed them."

"What... How?" Kyle questioned, genuine concern on his face.

"I've been a werewolf since I was born, and when I was seven, I was a bit... erm... vicious. I transformed before my parents had had time to lock me in the basement and I attacked them. Normally, when I'm a wolf, I have slight human thoughts, but when I first shift I only have wolf thoughts. It takes a while for my human brain and my wolf brain to link up." Carrie paused to wipe away a tear that had leaked out. "I shifted back after my ten days to find myself lying in a puddle of their blood. They were laid either side of me with their throats ripped out. No one had come to check because they told people that I had to have hospital treatment the first ten days of every month. I didn't know what to do. I was seven, scared and feeling horrible after my transformation. I kind of grabbed some clothes and ran into the street, sobbing my eyes out and covered in their blood. It only took a couple of hours for the police to drive past and see everything."

Carrie glanced over at Kyle, who was watching her with a shocked expression.

"So, yeah, I know what you are."
