A Magical Year (Magical trilogy book #2)

*Complete* 1976 ... Last year, Alex and Kyle visited Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with their school. They're best friends, and more like a brother and sister. Hogwarts was not the kind of school they expected to ever visit, since it taught REAL magic. And they never expected to meet such people there, people who they'd love.
Because of this love, Alex got the ability to make some simple spells; a talent that it so rare that it's nearly impossible. Now what'll happen when Alex turns from a muggle to a part-witch? And what will the Ministry of Magic decide to do about her?

75. The Unforgivable Curses

It's Friday and in Friday I don't have much classes. I only have Defense against the Dark Arts, an apparition class, Potions and Ancient Runes.

The Defense class was a bit depressing, it went like this;

Professor Merrythought was excited to teach us today's lesson.

"Listen class. Today our class will be more of Dark Arts than a Defense." The Slytherins who shared my class looked delighted by that. "We'll learn about the unforgivable curses and on Monday we'll learn how to defend them.

"Now the unforgivable curses are extremely dangerous, we only learn about them to know how to defend ourselves if we were put under them and to avoid them. Using any of these three curses on another human being, Muggle or wizard, will cause the caster his life. Well, not literally but the caster would be sent to Azkaban for the rest of his or her life, which is technically the same. There is only one way the caster can be considered innocent and that's if he was put under an imperius curse himself and ordered to use them.

"There are only three unforgivable curses. First, the imperius curse. The effect of it is that it places the victim completely under the caster's control. It's really hard to resist though a person with exceptional strength of will is capable of resisting it. Most people can't resist it, but we're hoping to get all of you the ability to fight it. We don't want anyone of you to be put under it, it's such an unpleasant thing. One can do anything while under the imperius curse, anything

"Its incantation is imperio. Let's take an example. We have a box full of experiments' rats, one full of spiders and one full of worms. Normally I would use the spiders or the worms but they're too small and I'm not in the mood for an Engorgement curse so I'll use the rats. She took a rat out of the box and pointed at it with her wand saying, "Imperio." The rat started moving the way she ordered it to. "See, I can order it to bite its own tale..." And it did. "Scream." And it did, in its own ratty way. "And perhaps.. go to the box again." And it did. "The castor can order the victim to lie, kill and do many horrible stuff. That's why it's forbidden." All I could think of was Sirius, because he was newly put under the imperius curse. He could've done anything. He could've killed me if his mother wanted and he couldn't have done anything about it. It's not that easy apparently.

"Second, the Cruciatus Curse." Only mentioning it got some students to shudder and murmur some stuff, talking about how horrible this curse is. I've been told about the curses before by Sirius, but he only mentioned them and their effect and incantation, and I can't really remember anything about the Cruciatus curse. I've never seen someone casting one of the unforgivable curses on anyone, or anything.

"Yes, yes. Such a horrible curse. The Cruciatus Curse. Incantation: Crucio. Also known as the Torture Curse. It's used to torture other people. Horrible, horrible torture. It can cause the victim to die or get mad. To successfully perform this curse, the wizard or witch must possess a deep desire to cause the victim pain. For example;" She took another rat out of the box and said, "Crucio." This rat even screamed more than the first one did, it screamed with pain and was trying to fight it. It tried to run or bite or do anything to fight it. Of course it couldn't be fought. Professor Merrythought didn't make his torture long. She stopped the curse, and the rat looked quite exhausted. She lift it with her hand and inserted it back into the box and exhaled.

"Now, the last and worst curse of all. A curse used only by monsters; the killing curse. Incantation:" She said and wrote on the blackboard as she did, "AVADA KEDAVRA."

"It's been cast, of course. And no one's ever survived it. Let's take the last rat here-" She gave the rat one last sad look before she frowned and pointed her wand towards it saying the incantation aloud. "Avada Kedavra." The rat lay on earth. A motionless body. It was like killing someone with a bullet, but no, there was no bullets in magic.

I was depressed by seeing it like this, and seeing the other rat which was put under the Cruciatus curse. How could people do that to other humans?! It's so unimaginable! It's so heartless. And why would anyone do that?

The thoughts chased me all day until it was nighttime and after having dinner with my friends. It was probably because Sirius held my hand and said,

"I want to take you somewhere at dawn."

I've got used to the fact that Ben's a wizard, by now. It's not that strange for me, really, my daughter's a witch as well, but it's just that I never expected him to also be a wizard. I turned the TV on and the news channel popped up. There were more people dying mysteriously. I'm not a person who likes news that much or watch them, but Ben is. This mysterious dying though, has totally got me to get all confused. I really don't know how the investigators can sleep at night with having to think about things like those.

"Jane, I have to tell you something." Ben said suddenly. Oh dear. A million questions and bad thoughts came to my mind, I tried to ignore them as I said,

"It's about these people. They're not really dying mysteriously." Why is he telling me about this? Is he a part of it somehow?

"What? Then how're they dying." He turned to face me.

"Well, to muggles it's a mystery but to wizards it's clear. I'm about to tell you a huge secret Jane, and because I trust you completely I'll tell you about it. I'll need your help in something."

"Ben, please talk you're making me nervous." He took a deep breath and talked,

"There's a dark wizard, Jane, called V- called Vo-"

"Voldemort." He said in a whisper. "He has some strange power, he's quite powerful and he's rising now, he just needs some more power to become ready. He's killing those muggles, that's either him or his assistants, they call themselves Deatheaters. These muggles you're seeing on news are the families of some of the muggle-born wizards and witches. He, like Salazar Slytherin believes that muggle-borns shouldn't be allowed in the magical world. People should be either half-blood or pure-blood which means, their parents must be wizards and witches, at least one of them."

"But .. Alex is.."

"Alex is a muggle-born which means she'll be threatened, but don't worry, she'll be fine. Hogwarts is one of the safest places in the magical world. As for you, you shouldn't worry either. I'm here for you, I'll always be here for you. I'll protect you with my life, Jane. And I mean it."

I just ran to him and hugged him tight. He gives me safety, something I've lost a long time a go. The feeling that men aren't really frighting or killing machines that are built to torture women. Men can love and protect and be good. Yes, I'm tough, but sometimes even the strongest need protection.

"We should do something about it Jane." He whispered as he kissed my head.

"What should we do though?" I asked.

"I have a plan."
