A Magical Year (Magical trilogy book #2)

*Complete* 1976 ... Last year, Alex and Kyle visited Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with their school. They're best friends, and more like a brother and sister. Hogwarts was not the kind of school they expected to ever visit, since it taught REAL magic. And they never expected to meet such people there, people who they'd love.
Because of this love, Alex got the ability to make some simple spells; a talent that it so rare that it's nearly impossible. Now what'll happen when Alex turns from a muggle to a part-witch? And what will the Ministry of Magic decide to do about her?

65. The Champions' Selection

It's been three days since the day we put our names in the goblet of fire. Max, Clara, Lara and I were walking to the Great Hall. The announcement of the selected champions' names will be this evening, which is now.

I wasn't that nervous, because honestly, I knew I wouldn't be selected, but I put my name anyway. The Marauders put their names too, so did Max and Lara, Clara didn't though.

As we reached the Great Hall we seated ourselves next to each other. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and nervousness. Many people put their names, and we all longed to know who'll be the three champions.

"Today the three champions will be selected. The minister of magic came to Hogwarts to watch the tournament. This is the first step in the tournament, picking the champions. And in any second now, the Goblet of fire will be ready to announce the name of the first champion. Durmstrang Institute's champion is..." Professor Dumbledore paused. A piece of parchment came out of the goblet, half burned. Professor Dumbledore caught it with his fingers and read, "Ragnar Dahl." Despite the idea that I had no idea who that guy was, I cheered with the cheering crowds. It must be such an honor, to be selected as a champion. The guy was huge, like really, huge. He was quite muscular too, which made me wonder, does the tournament require physical strength in addition to magical abilities?

"Cambridge High School's champion will be..." We waited again, and just like the first time professor Dumbledore caught it with his fingers, though I think some of the hair on his fingers were burned this time. "Kyle Alford." Kyle? My mouth fell open. We cheered, but I didn't really find my voice, so I only cheered by applauding. I looked at him and his face as shocked as mine. What? I saw his lips mouthing but I couldn't really hear him over the cheers. The marauders were the happiest in the hall, it seemed.

"And finally, Hogwarts' champion for this year's Triwizard Tournament will be..." The Hall was filled with silence, a single breath could be heard. "Katy Zeller!" I thought about the name for a while before I actually realized which Katy that was. Katy Zeller, our Slytherin friend. We spent some good time with her last year, she was Ruby's closest friend here at Hogwarts. Not only because I like her, but also because she became our champion, I cheered like all the others.

"Silence!" I never heard professor Dumbledore silencing us in that, so it must've been urgent. "The goblet of fire has considered another student as a champion. It might be because this student doesn't belong to only one school." I looked around me and noticed that I wasn't the only one who wasn't really sure what he was talking about. "It looks like there'll be another champion, who doesn't only belong to Hogwarts, and neither belongs to only Cambridge, it's as if the Goblet of Fire decided that this student will be dealt with as a fourth school." What? Neither belongs to only Hogwarts nor to only Cambridge..? "This champion will be..." Professor Dumbledore paused, so did everyone else in the hall. As if I was watching the scene on a muted TV. " Alex Cross."

Everyone around me was shouting, but I didn't really hear much. All I heard was a low tone of cheering, it was as if I put on a headset and it lowered the voices around me. It was probably shock.

"I'm a champion?!" I shouted.

"Oh my God I can't believe it!" Max said excitedly.

"Oh God." Clara was shaking her head.

I'm a champion. So is Kyle. I don't know what's happened to the world but it's gone insane.

"Now I'd like to ask the champions to kindly join me in the trophies room."

"So if she won, both Hogwarts and Cambridge will win?" The Durmstrang's headmaster Michael Eriksson asked. He wasn't pleased about this, not at all.

"Well, yes."

"But that's not allowed, Albus. The tournament must have one winner!"

"Let's just say there has been a couple of changes this year. Believe me, Michael when I tell you that I was as shocked as you by knowing about this. I never thought it could happen. But now that it's happened let's not think about it as a tournament, but remember the real reason the tournament was made for." That kinda shut him up for he opened his mouth as if to say something, but closed it immediately.

Sure, I was happy to be a champion, that's why I put my name in the Goblet, isn't it? But I was still in shock. I knew there were only supposed to be three champions, that's why it's called Tri-wiazrd tournament. Apparently, we weren't supposed to hear this conversation, but we heard it anyway. In the trophies room we were. I looked around me and discovered that sure, the trophies room was the only way this room can be described. It was full of awards and trophies.

"Did I do something wrong?" I whispered to the other champions. Kyle mouthed, I don't know but Katy spoke, joined by the Durmstrang champion.

"Alex you put your name in the Goblet on purpose didn't you? You knew this would happen since you - "belong" to both Hogwarts and Cambridge."

"What?" I asked. The professors were still busy discussing things.

"It's just .. not fair, is it? I mean, your odds are better than mine!" Ragnar said.

"I didn't- I- what the-" I stopped. "Listen guys, I'm partially a muggle, I don't even know that much about the triwizard tournament. I never thought something like this would happen if I put my name! I never thought I'd be selected anyway!" Maybe the only reason I got selected is because I'm the only one here in this case, being half a muggle and half a witch. I continued to myself. "I don't think you should blame me, because I never intended to do such thing."

Katy just rolled her eyes. What's wrong with her anyway? It would only make her odds better, and besides, she was my friend!

"Weren't we friends?" I asked not able to keep it in.

"Were we?" She asked raising an eyebrow.

"We were." Kyle helped me. "We were. Look, I don't know about you guys, but I'm not here to fight. It's a tournament, it's something dangerous and fun at the same time. We're here to compete, yes, but that doesn't mean we have to hate each other or talk to each other like this. Alex is my best friend, but you know, even if she weren't I wouldn't have blamed her for a decision the cup made. Even Dumbledore didn't expect something like this to happen, because, well apparently, it's unusual, so I say we stop this whole fighting and compete as true champions. I don't know about you, but that's what I'll be doing."

Ragnar Dahl nodded. Kyle stretched his hand and I put mine on top of it, so did Ragnar. We all looked at Katy who finally huffed, rolled her eyes, and said,

On the count of three we said in union, "Triwizard champions!" Putting our hands in the air. Then the professors came.
