A Magical Year (Magical trilogy book #2)

*Complete* 1976 ... Last year, Alex and Kyle visited Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with their school. They're best friends, and more like a brother and sister. Hogwarts was not the kind of school they expected to ever visit, since it taught REAL magic. And they never expected to meet such people there, people who they'd love.
Because of this love, Alex got the ability to make some simple spells; a talent that it so rare that it's nearly impossible. Now what'll happen when Alex turns from a muggle to a part-witch? And what will the Ministry of Magic decide to do about her?

36. Potions

We had an Apparition class today, which was our second one. I still didn't manage to Apparate, but I'm still trying. The Apparating professor agreed that I had to keep on trying, and that I had a chance, though it wasn't really a big chance.

We were having lunch in the Great Hall. Talking about Quidditch. I still had two more classes for today; Potions and Ancient Runes. I shared Potions with Lara, luckily. Even that Lara and I are not as close as Clara and I, we're still friends, and I like Lara a lot.

Sirius gave me a kiss on the cheek as I said goodbye to my friends and went with Lara to the potions class. Professor Slughorn was delighted by our -or rather my- early arrival. It seems like he likes me, I'm not sure why. He likes people who are skillful, talented and clever, I can tell. And I'm pretty sure I can be considered as none of those. Even that the sorting hat decided to put me in Ravenclaw, I still can't believe -or admit- that I'm ... smart, in a way.

Kyle makes it really funnier. Since we're best friends, it's nothing but normal of us to tease each other a lot, and ever since Kyle knew that I was a Ravenclaw he'd made this whole believing I deserve to be a Ravenclaw thing, harder. It's not bad, really. He jokes a lot about it, and I joke about his courage when he gets scared by silly things. We both do it, and it makes things more fun. Joking about our days at Hogwarts during the vacation was really great. It reminded us of our days, and got us to believe that they did actually happen, that they were real. It gave us hope that someday we will visit Hogwarts again, probably as grown ups. That was, of course, before I discovered that I was actually going back to Hogwarts.

The thought of Kyle made me miss him. The truth is, when I imagined going back to Hogwarts, I didn't imagine doing it alone. Even that I'm technically not alone, I have the best friends anyone can wish for here, but it's just that I miss him a lot. We shared everything together, and even the trip to Hogwarts. But this time he's not here, and it's sad. And hard.

"So, Cross." Professor Slughron was saying. "Can you tell me what you smell?" I think I blushed. Because I was embarrassed. I hated being caught in my daydreams, or lost in thoughts. Especially when the attention of everyone got turned to me.

"Huh?" I asked.

"Come on, take a step closer to the cauldron." He said. Lara nudged me, and I noticed that many students were standing by the cauldron, most of them were girls. They went back as I got closer, and I sniffed.

I could smell mum's perfume, the one she wore when dad used to get home, before all the cheating.

The smell of my teddy bear's fur, that got less and less by the day, that I may not be able to smell it someday, and miss it.

The smell of Sirius, that I can only smell when he kisses me or gets really close to me.

The smell of home.

"Can I tell you what I can smell, professor?" I heard a faint or Lara's voice. I continued sniffing. I couldn't resist the lovely scents.

The smell of a new book.

The smell of ink.

The smell chalkboard.

The smell of newly baked bread.

The smell of my Hogwarts robes.

And strangely, Kyle's room.

I smell those and other things that I loved. I hadn't even appreciated how good these things smell, but right now. I wanted to keep on sniffing, maybe the sniffing will get all these things with me, right here, right now. Maybe sniffing will return them to me, and keep them forever.

"Well I smell cats, strawberries-"

"Let Cross tell us, Patel." Professor Slughorn said. As I looked at Lara I noticed two things.

One, that she was kinda disappointed by the dismiss of professor Slughorn, and two, that then she got all relieved when she found me looking at her. Clearly awake. She sighed.

"Come on Alex."

I didn't really want to shared that with everyone else in the class. It felt personal. And somehow, I felt that no one would want anyone to know what they could smell. Not everyone could smell the same things, I could tell because of Professor Slughorn's question and Lara's answers. No, I won't share it with everyone. It didn't occur to me until now, that maybe Lara was not actually telling the truth. Perhaps, I didn't really have to lie, just choose some of them.

"Bread and ink ..." I hesitated. "and home."

"Ah, home sweet home. Now see this potion everyone? It's a love potion, it causes whoever drinks it to fall in love with the maker of the potion. Only permanently."

I looked at Lara and laughed. Lara knew about the love potion incident that happened last year with Sirius. We told her about it. We both giggled as we remembered all about it.

"We also will be learning how to brew this potion. Can you tell what it is? Anyone?" Lara had her hand in the air, and as always, most of the Ravenclaws did. "Yet, Marvel?"

"Draught of Living Death."

"True. And can anyone tell me what that is?" Professor Slughron asked, pointing at another cauldron."Yes Patel?"

"Felix Felicis. Also known as, liquid luck."

"Indeed. Liquid luck. It's a luck potion. And let me tell you, it's not easy to make. It needs six month of preparing! Now, you can open your books and turn to page twenty four, there you'll find  the instructions of Draught of Living Death potion, which we'll be learning to make today. The best Draught of Living Death maker will get some of this." He said pointing at Felix Felicis.
