This is the story of how Marietta fell in love with her best friend.

6. "Pretty Cool Girl"

I hung up the phone without answering Jovannie, and put the phone on my nightstand.

“Hey, Ucello”, I said and smiled.

He walked around, took a look at my room. He looked at the shelves with pictures, the dandelions in the windowsill.

“You have a pretty room”, he said and continued looking around.

My hands were warm and almost moist.

“Can I ask you something?”

As soon as I said those words, I regretted it. I shouldn’t have done that, I knew it! I felt like an idiot.

He stopped, turned around and looked at me with a strange expression in his face.
“Sure”, he answered and sat down next to me on the bed.

I sat up with my legs crossed and looked down at the duvet.

“So… what is it?” he asked.

I calmed myself down and looked him in the eyes.

He smiled and seemed very confused.

“Why… what?” he said oddly and made me feel like an idiot.

“You can do this…” I said to myself in my head.

“Why are you talking to me?” I asked. Crap, I was so stupid.

He giggled and gave me a half smile. I looked away ‘cause I just couldn’t look at it – he was too perfect.

“Marietta, you’re not as bad as you think you are”, he quietly said with a low, rusty voice.

I looked immediately into his precious eyes.

“Wh-what?” I asked. The thoughts stumbled through my mind. Did he mean that? Did I even hear what he just said?

He sat up and leaned a bit forward.

“You’re a pretty cool girl”, he whispered.

“Ucello, help with the dishes!” his dad shouted. Ucello smiled and left my room. He closed the door slowly behind him, as if he wasn’t supposed to be there.

I was surprised and confused. I couldn’t figure out if I was happy, worried, unhappy, angry or whatever it was. I guess I was just confused.

But what did it mean? ‘Not as bad as you think’ and ‘a pretty cool girl’? What was that supposed to mean? Was he telling me that I was an awesome friend? Was I one of the guys? Or was he saying that he liked me?

Those words could’ve meant anything!

I went downstairs. Dad was cleaning the table, but Ucello’s parents had apparently insisted that Ucello should help.

It was all dark outside. Ucello was doing the dishes and I wanted to go over there and talk to him, but dad was there, and it would just be awkward…

As I was about to leave the kitchen, dad shouted:

Ucello almost dropped a plate on the floor.

“Mariola has gone to bed, so be quiet”.

How ironic of him.

Everything was cleaned and pretty, and Ucello and his family were heading home.

Dad shook their hands and thanked them for coming.

As he helped them get their jackets, Ucello walked towards me.

“See you in school”, he said and went for a hug. I couldn’t hug a guy in front of my dad, he would go crazy!

I couldn’t believe I did it, but I rejected the hug by crossing my arms.

Ucello looked down and put his hands in his pockets, hid them awkwardly.

“See you in school”, I answered him shyly and smiled a bit. He seemed to understand that my dad was there, and that I didn’t want him to get suspicious. Dad didn’t even know that I knew Ucello.

He smiled back and winked at me. I felt the warmth in my cheeks from blushing.
