4. Cooking for Clients

It took me a long to walk home, but I made it. I closed the door behind me and walked in.

“Marietta, take your shoes off, right now!” dad yelled at me. “And where have you been?!”

I was calm and stayed that way.

“Don’t worry, I was just over at Jovannie’s place”, I said.

Dad was making chicken with vegetables for dinner while Mariola sat at the table and played with her dolls.

“Mariola! Get the toys down from the table!” dad said with an angry voice.

“Geez, dad… what’s going on?” I asked him frustrated. I guess I easily lost my calmness.

“We’re having guests tonight and I want to make sure everything is perfect”, he said.

He ran all over the place. I grabbed his arm and held his shoulder.

“Dad, calm down”, I said. “There’s no need to get stressed.”

“I’m sorry girls. It’s just very important clients that are coming for dinner tonight…” he said exhausted.

I pulled out a chair for him and sat him down.

“Papa, you need to relax. I’ll make the dinner”, I said.

He turned his head and looked at me with his big, shocked eyes.

“Really?” he asked. He seemed very relieved.

“Of course I will”, I said happily and smiled. “Just sit here, calm down and relax. I’ll take care of everything.”

“I can’t just sit around”, he said all confused. “I’ll be in my office if you need me”.

He went to his office while I stayed in the kitchen with Mariola.

“We’re having chicken?” she asked.

I started cutting some vegetables to put on the pan.

“Yeah”, I said.

Mariola got off her chair and went to the living room to watch some TV.

“Hey, hey, hey!” I said while running towards her.

“What?!” she shouted annoyed.

I took the pillows that were on the couch.

“Dad is really trying his best to make the house look good”, I explained. “We’re having very important guests tonight, and I need you to keep the house clean, and don’t sit on the pillows!”

Mariola got up and shouted at me:
“You’re not the boss around here!”

I was shocked. Everyone was so pissed that evening.

“Don’t talk to me like that!” I said while pointing at her.

“You are such a meanie!” she shouted as loud as she could.

I sighed, took her hand and dragged her towards the kitchen. I placed her in the corner and said:

“Now you’ll have to sit here until dinner’s ready.”

She started kicking, punching the air and mumbled:
“That’s not fair.”
“Life’s not fair, sis”, I responded with an attitude.

I went over to see the chicken. As I started mixing the vegetables with it, I noticed an awful smell.

“There’s something wrong”, I said to myself.

I studied the pan and noticed the chicken was all black and burned.

“Oh my God!” I shouted as I turned off the heat.

“Look Mariola, now the chicken is burned thanks to you!” I shouted and sighed as I tossed it in the trashcan.

“And dad trusted me…”

I searched through the fridge while panicking.

“What else can I serve?” I asked myself.

I went through every single cabinet in the kitchen. As I was losing hope, I found a can of baked beans.

“That’ll have to do”, I said and started making baked beans.

“Dad is going to kill me”, I said to myself.

Dinner was ready, the table was set and I only needed the guests to arrive.

“Mariola, go sit at the dinner table”, I shouted at her.

She came running with her dolls in her hands, but I took them away and said:
“You know how dad gets when he sees you playing at the table”.

That sure didn’t make her happier, but she’d had to deal with it.

The doorbell started ringing. I hurried to the door and as I opened it, I shouted “Dad, the guests are here!”

To my surprise, it was Ucello and his parents.
