5. Awkwardly Surprised

“Oh… eh… hey” I said awkwardly. His parents looked very oddly at me, but Ucello just smiled.

“Hi Marietta”, he said and showed off his shiny, white teeth. “I had no idea you lived here”, he continued.

Oh really? Of course, it was all just one big coincidence.

“I sure do”, I said – once again awkwardly. I was nervous and I didn’t really know what to do.

“Come on in”, I said and moved to the side so they all could get in and take off their jackets and shoes.

It was Ucello, his mom and his dad.

Ucello’s parents threw their jackets at me like I was the housekeeper or some kind of maid.

Of course Ucello took the jackets and said:
“Don’t worry, I got this.”

I went from being happy about Ucello, to not trusting him at all. Why was he suddenly obsessed about me?

They sat by the table, and dad came as fast as he could. You could tell he was nervous.

“Hello, and welcome”, he said while shaking their hands. He sat down and asked me to go get the food in the kitchen – and by that he meant the chicken with vegetables.

I went into the kitchen and got the bowl of baked beans… I was so ashamed and embarrassed…

I sighed as I put it on the table. They all looked extremely shocked but mostly my dad, who was expecting to see chicken.

He grabbed my arm, held it down so my head was next to his. He whispered angrily into my ear:
“What is this?! Where is the chicken?!”

I didn’t think the others heard it – at least I did’t hope so.

“I’m sorry”, I just whispered back and quickly found my seat.

Ucello went for the baked beans as the first one. He took a big spoon next to the bowl.

He shoved it down into the bowl to get a great scoop.

He poured the baked beans out on his plate.

“Eh…” he said quietly.

There were chunks of frozen beans stuck together with sauce like glue.

Everyone at the table looked frightened, afraid to eat it, but no-one said anything.

He tried it while making strange faces, but at least he tried to cover it up with a smile.

He almost looked like he was in pain for each scoop of frozen baked beans he tried to eat.

“It’s really good”, he mumbled through his mouth filled with frozen beans.

I was too disgusted to even try it.

“Can I go?” I asked.

“Sure…” dad said frustrated.

I hurried towards my bedroom and closed the door after me.

I picked up my phone and called Jovannie.

“Hello?” she said.

“I just had to call you! You’ll never believe what’s going on…” I said.

“What is it? Tell me!”

I lowered my voice and whispered into the phone.

“My dad is having guests over for dinner. Guess who it is…”

“No way… is it…?”

“Yes. Right now. I’m in my room, they’re downstairs having dinner.”

“Go down there, talk to him!”

“No, what should I say?!”

“I don’t know just… I don’t know.”

“Don’t you think it’s the weirdest coincidence ever?”

“Yeah… Go downstairs and talk to him now!”

As I was about to scream at her and tell her why I couldn’t, someone knocked on my door.

Ucello entered the room with a big smile on his face and sat down on the bed next to me.

“Marietta? Hello? Are you there?”
