Only When I Walk Away (Under Major Editing)

Don't you only love me when I walk away?

3. Chapter 3

The vibration from my phone under my pillow woke me up. I groan lifting my head, searching under my pillow for it. It was a text from Liam. I groggily sit up unlocking my phone.

From Liam:

Wake up Lotus! I'll be outside at 6:50 :)

I smile at my phone throwing it on the bed. Liam has always been my 'alarm clock'. Since our freshmen year of high school, I would always get up extremely late. I would even miss first period sometimes, until Liam decided to just wake me up. And for some strange reason, it worked. I stand up walking to my closet picking out my outfit. I choose a lace spaghetti strap shirt, and I pair it with high waist shorts. I stand on my tip toes grabbing a pair of high-top sneakers from the top shelf of my closet and throwing them on the floor.

I leave my room to shower. After getting out, I tie my thick dark wavy hair in a high messy ponytail. I rush to my room getting dress. I grab my backpack and phone, and check the time. It was now 6:45 and I had five minutes, I quickly ran downstairs. My mom and dad were sitting at the kitchen table. My mom is slowly stirring her coffee laying her head on my dad's shoulder as he reads through the newspaper.

"Morning Lotus." The both greet me simultaneously.

I grab a banana and a water bottle before kissing them both on the cheek. I rush outdoors closing the door behind me and locking it. Liam was outside, right on time. His hands deep in his pockets as he kicked random rocks.

I catch his attention as I walk towards him. He gives me a bright smile, before he drapes his arm around my shoulder as we begin walking. School wasn't far, just a couple blocks away. I let out a loud yawn as we were walking, it made Liam chuckle. I rolled my eyes as we continued walking. It was getting more difficult, I was too tired to even walk. My eyes began to shut slowly, as I began shaking my head side to side in order to wake myself up.

"Hmm?" He hummed.

"Can you carry me all the way to school?" I asked in the most polite voice I could muster up.

Liam scoffed looking down at me and giving me a 'seriously?' look. I gave him an innocent smile before he finally gave in. He bent down in front of me, encouraging me to get on his back. I got on wrapping my legs around him, as my arms wrapped around his neck. I lay my head down on his shoulder, trying to fall back asleep.

"What time did you go to sleep?"

Great. I thought, his brotherly instincts kicked in. I couldn't lie and tell him I went to sleep early. He could tell when I was lying. I sighed before replying.

"Midnight." I mumbled hoping he wouldn't hear me. He stopped walking.

"Midnight?! Lotus, I woke you up at six this morning!"

I groaned. Liam continued walking. We were halfway to school .

"Six hours of sleep isn't enough. They say you're supposed to have at least eight hours of sleep-" I eventually tuned Liam out as continued to scold me.

"Alright, dad." I replied sarcastically. He always hated when I called him that. He quickly dropped me from his back, causing me to almost tumble over. I gave him an angered look. He furrowed his eyebrows, his eyes dark and full of anger.

"I told you not to call me that." His voice was thick with anger

"Well I wouldn't have to call you that if you didn't act like it." I retorted.

"Only looking out for your best interest."

Liam's gaze fell to the floor, his hands in his pockets. I sighed before wrapping my arms around myself, guilt began to wash over me. I slowly and hesitantly walked up to Liam, wrapping my arms around his waist. I began apologizing against his chest. Liam's arms hovered over me before he finally pulled me closer to him.

"Alright, let's go."

Liam draped his arm around my shoulders once again as we continued to walk our way to school.

Liam pushed the school door holding it open for me. I walked in as he began to walk behind me. As we turn the corner making our way to the student lounge, he wraps his arm around my waist. I never really know why he does this, but I'm guessing it has to do with his overly protective side.

"Hi, Lotus."

My eyebrows furrow as I look around trying to find out who called my name. I was confused, I didn't have many friends, so who could possibly be calling me? I continued to look around as I spot Josh waving at me, a big grin on his face. I blush back as I slowly wave back smiling. I can feel Liam pulling me closer to him. Josh looks at Liam confused as his smile drops. We continue walking down the hallway until we reach Liam's locker. He opens it grabbing out his notebooks and shoving them in his backpack. I sigh leaning my back against the lockers behind me, looking up at the ceiling.

It was finally lunch and I was waiting at the tree Liam and I normally sit under. My back leaned against the tree as I sat down. My legs crossed as I began shaking them getting impatient. I checked my phone again for the fortieth time, waiting for a text from him. Suddenly shade covers my body, I look up and spot Liam standing above me.

"Sorry I'm late! I went to the vending machine and bought us both chocolate."

My anger suddenly disappears as he sits down next to me, handing me my chocolate bar. I quickly snatch it away, eagerly tearing off the wrapper. Liam chuckles, dammit, he knows my weakness is chocolate. I take a bite lying my head on his shoulder. Suddenly, more shade is covering both of us. We both look up and noticed a girl standing in front of us. It was Miranda. She was a nice girl, around the same age as us. She had long dark hair and pale skin, her lips and cheeks were both very red, and she had light blue eyes. She was a really shy girl, but she was extremely nice. I lifted my head from Liam's shoulder.

"Hi Lotus." She greeted the turned to Liam. "H-hi Liam."

It was well known around the school that she had a thing for Liam. Liam was just too modest to realize it. She smiled down at us, her hands together.

"Hi Miranda." Liam and I both greeted simultaneously.

"I-I was wondering Liam, if maybe you wanted to do something this Saturday?" Miranda smiled down at Liam, he began to play with his fingers before hesitantly answering. He looked up at Miranda giving her a forced smile.

"Sorry, but I have family coming over Saturday. Maybe next time?''

A look of sadness and embarrassment washed her face. She nodded her head before waving goodbye and leaving. Liam sighed.

"I didn't know you had family coming over."

"I don't." Liam said.

"Wha- Why did you sat that then?" I gaped at him. I turned to look at Miranda as she walked farther away, her head down in embarrassment.

"I don't want to go out with her."

"Liam she's adorable! And really nice! How could you say no to her?" I furrowed my brows. There wasn't a flaw that I was able to find on Miranda. Liam shrugged his shoulders before laying down and resting his head on my lap. He pulled out his phone and began texting. I quickly took his phone out of his hand. He looked at me confused. "I'm not giving you your phone until you agree to go on a date with her."

"Lotus don't be silly. Give me my phone."

I shook my head, Liam attempted to grab his phone, but I dodged his hands every time. He sighed sitting up next to me.

"I didn't want to have to do this.'' Liam said with a suspicious smirk.

"Do what?'' I asked, I was actually fearful. Although Liam was sweet, I still had yet to learn what he was capable of.

Liam began poking my sides causing me to yelp. He continued doing it adding more pressure each time. I began to laugh hysterically, begging him to stop. My eyes began to water from laughing so much. The whole school turned to look at us, Liam was on top of me tickling me. I tried my best to kick him off, but it seemed like it didn't faze him. My laughing was getting louder, he covered my mouth with his hands, I quickly licked it causing him to pull away in disgust.

"Okay, Liam! Here!"

Liam laughed loudly before getting off me and snatching his phone away quickly. I sat up wiping my tears away letting out a final chuckle. I checked my phone and realized our break was now over. Liam stood up extending his hand to pull me up. I stood up as we began walking.

"What are you doing later?" Liam broke our silence.

"Nothing." I shrugged my shoulders looking up at him. He looked down at me giving me a smile.

"Do you wanna have a movie night?"

I smile as we stop in front of my English class I nod my head before Liam smiles giving me a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I enter my English class before Liam jogs down the hall to his class. I quickly walk to my seat at the back of the class, slumping down in my seat.

"Alright class! Get with your partners!"

Feet shuffling began around the room. Josh slowly made his way to me, grabbing a chair and placing it across from me. I wave at him as he plops down in the seat. I grab my backpack pulling out the book we're going to be working with.

"Before we start, can I ask you a question?" Josh says scratching the back of his neck.

"Of course." I smile at him.

"The guy you were with this morning, is he your boyfriend?" I look at him confused. I thought everyone knew Liam and I were just good friends. Guess not.

"His name is, Liam. And no, he's just a really good friend of mine." A look of relief passed through his face, causing butterflies to flutter in my stomach. My cheeks turned crimson.

"He must like you or something." Josh began to tap his pencil.

"No, he's just really overprotective. But honestly, there's nothing between us." I explained while opening our book flipping through the pages

"Well if there isn't anything between you guys, I was wondering if you wanted to do something Friday night?"

My eyes widened and my heartbeat sped up. Is this really happening? I thought to myself. I tried to open my mouth, but the words weren't coming out.

I was sprawled out lazily on my couch flipping through the channels. Suddenly my doorbell rings. I excitedly jump up rushing towards the door knowing who it was. I opened the door slowly and Liam stood in front of me. He had movies in one hand, and a bag of junk food in the other. I excitedly hugged him.

"Lotus y-your crushing me!" Liam managed to get out.

"Sorry! I'm just excited!"

I let him go before guiding him inside and closing the door. Liam kicked off his shoes before making his way to the couch. He laid the movies and the junk food on the coffee table. I made my way towards him. I stopped in my track, looking at his movie selection.

"Liam you always bring the same movies," I scoffed picking the movies that I once loved, but was now completely tired of them.

"I like them."

"Fine." I rolled my eyes before playing the first movie.

We were in the middle of watching Liam's second movie. Well I should say Liam was in the middle of watching the movie. I wasn't watching it much, but Liam was watching it like he's never seen it before. Since there was an awkward silence, and I was already bored with the movie, I decided to tell Liam what Josh asked me today. I paused the movie causing Liam to groan.

"Why'd you pause it?"

"I have to tell you something." I said. I was excited and I only hoped Liam would be happy for me. It's not like I get asked out everyday. Liam looked at me confused. He shifted his body turning to me, crossing his legs. I turned sideways reciprocating his actions. I sigh before opening my mouth to speak. "Josh asked me to go out on Friday."

Liam glared at me, for what seemed like eternity. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. He lifted an eyebrow.

"What did you say?" His voice was low and stern.

"Yes." I shrugged, my gaze fell to the floor. I began to nervously play with my fingers.

Liam turned to the T.V. he grabbed the remote and played the movie. I sat there awkwardly playing with my fingers. Why isn't he saying anything? I quickly glanced at him. He looked sad, almost upset. I watched the tight grip he had on the remote, his knuckles turning white. I moved closer to him, grabbing one of his arms wrapping it around me. He was stiff, and wasn't giving in like he normally does.

"Liam," he didn't even look down at me. He just ignored me. This was the worst. He was always too overprotective, and his brotherly instincts always kicked in. "Why don't you want me going out with Josh?'' I quietly asked looking up at him. He ignored me again and continued watching his movie.

"I don't think he's right for you." He shrugged, I lifted my head and looked at him. He just sat there clenching his jaw.

"But you don't know that."

"You don't know that either." He retorted.

I sat back and crossed my arms. Liam sighed, he put his palm down on my knee while looking me in the eyes. I couldn't handle this, his eye contact was making me feel vulnerable.

"Look, I can't tell you who can or can't go out with. All I'm trying to say is I don't think he's the right guy for you."

"Well then who is?" I asked frustrated, raising my hands.

"Maybe you'll just have to wait and see." Liam leaned over and gave me a soft peck on the cheek before going back to watching the movie.

Wait and see?

Liam's POV

Sometime between the ending of the second movie or the beginning of the third movie did Lotus fall asleep. Her head rested on my shoulder as she peacefully slept. Her chest slowly rising and falling with every breath, a small smirk appearing on her face. Beautiful. It's pretty obvious I had extreme feelings for Lotus. Everyone I know knew that, which confused me even more how she didn't see it. Those fits I have that she calls 'brotherly instincts'  it's just pure jealousy and hurt. I wish I could be the one taking her out Friday night. The one she spends hours getting dolled up for. The one she stays up all night thinking about. Oh well.

I look down at Lotus and she's in a deep sleep. I can't just leave her down here. I carefully pick her up bridal style, trying my best not to wake her. I make my way to the stairs slowly going up, one by one. As I reach the hallways I turn left to her bedroom. With one hand I open the door walking in. I turn on the light and walk to her bed. I peel back the covers and lay her down, tucking her in. I grab a chair and pull it up beside her bed. I watch as she peacefully sleeps. I brush a strand of hair out of her face, before sighing and looking down at her in awe. I quickly look behind me to make sure no one is in or around her room. I lightly kick her door shut.

"I know you can't hear me or anything but I like you. I mean like you." I grab her hand in mine.

"I've always have, for as long as I can remember, and I probably always will. You're beautiful, and flawless, and I just wish you can see how mad I am about you. You are the reason I wake up smiling every morning, and the reason for my many sleepless nights." I pull her lifeless hand to my lips and give it a soft kiss.

"Today you told me you have a date Friday. And hurt. But, I just want you to be happy. I just wish you were awake so I could tell you this." I gently let go of her hand before standing up and looking behind me again. I lean down and give her a soft kiss on the forehead.

"Goodnight, Lotus."

I quietly exit her room going downstairs and locking the front door before I leave, making my way back home.
