Self Belief, Surfing and Me

For the Jamal Edwards Self Belief competition. I know this is kinda a bit too different, but I'm hoping that people will embrace the... oddness of this. Enjoy!

1. Hello

So I have decided to do something a bit different for the new Jamal Edwards competition. Surfing has been a passion and a hobby for nearly three years now, and it's something that I'm proud of. Not only is it fun but it has built my confidence up by a mile, and there's just something so calming about being out there in the ocean with just the sound of the water lapping against your board.

Deep, I know.

But before you ask, 'what on earth has this got to do with self-belief?' I will answer this simply. First of all, because where I surf there are not a lot of females in the sea with me, and it has kind of become a stereotype where people just assume it's a men's sport. It's a really good feeling when you come out the water and there's a little girl staring at you, and then runs over to her parents going, "I want to do that when I'm big!"

And secondly, because surfing is a dangerous sport. It is not only physically demanding, but mentally as well, and once you have had an accident it takes up a whole lot of courage to get up on that board again. Last year I suffered an accident whereupon I caught a wave but fell off, my board was flung up into the air and the fin on the underside of my board (the sharp, black pointy thing' went into my leg. It was incredibly painful and I had a huge bruise the size of a watermelon but I wasn't going to let that stop me. While surfing, you look up at a huge wave looming above you and think, "I'm never going to be able to catch that."

If you think about it, that's a lot like life. We see something scary approaching and lose all of our self belief, we think we are too weak. But that's not always the case, and sometimes it takes the scary things to prove to ourselves how strong we really are.
