These Bruises

"Que sera, you'll never guess who I saw."
I was loved. I was hurt. That was repeated when I left you. But there are two other people who I love. As a single mom with two little kids in California, my life got better. It was six years. Six years since I last saw you. Six years since those little talks. Now you can see that these bruises that I've been hiding for those six long years mean. (Second book in Little Talks duology)

20. The Return of Britta Carter

I pull out the keys and unbuckle my seatbelt. I step out of the car and slam the door. I take a deep breath and walk towards the front gate.

I've been going to these Friday games since I graduated high school.

The Amelia Island High School homecoming football game.

"Cassidy!" I hear Katie yell my name. I turn around and see her running towards me. We finally reach each other and hug. "Guess what?!"

"What?" I ask. She looks down at her stomach. "Oh my gosh congratulations!"

Katie is pregnant.

And Britta is going to be an aunt!

If only she was here...

"Cassidy, lovely to see you again." Mrs.Carter comes up behind her.

"Mrs.Carter, nice to see you again too!" I reply.

"Why don't we go buy our tickets and to find seats?" Katie suggests.

And with that, we do.

The band marches off the field and the lights in the stadium go dark. There are mumbles from the stadium in the front and the back.

I get a text from Liz, and it said.

"Katie and your mom are with Cassidy and I. And everyone else is sitting w/ Zayn."

I don't text her back because the band is set up on the 50. Not the marching band, the band that I met in front of Caribou Coffee.

The lights go dark, which is my cue to walk onto the field.

"And now, making a surprise return from San Diego California, singing a song titled 'Why Don't We Go There', welcome back from the class of 2013, Britta Carter!"

The lights dim back on, I take a deep breath, and start to sing.

"I know you want to-know you want to take it slow-oh oh.

Think about all the places we could go-oh oh.

If you give in tonight,

Let me set you free,

We'll touch the other side,

Just give me the keys.

Cause we got all night,

And we're going nowhere!

Why don't you stay?

Why don't we go there?

Let's take a ride,

Out in the cold air!

I know the way,

Why don't you go there with me?

Say the word-say the word, but don't say no-oh oh.

Sky dive, you and I, with just these clo-o-othes.

Your secret's safe with me,

There's no right time or place,

Cause anyone could see

Through it anyway.

Cause we got all night,

And we're going nowhere!

Why don't you stay?

Why don't we go there?

Let's take a ride

Out in the cold air.

I know the way.

Why don't you go there with me?

Hey, I don't want you to be the one that got away.

I want to get addicted to you, yeah!

You're rushing through my mind,

I want to feel the high,

I wanna be addicted, don't say

Just say

Cause we got all night!

And we're going nowhere!

Why don't you stay?

Why don't we go there?

Let's take a ride! (Let's take a ride)

Out in the cold air!

I know the way! (I know the way)

So why don't you go there with me?

With me!

With me!

Why don't you go there with me?"

I set the mic back on the stand and take a bow. I can see people running down the bleachers and over to the gates. The man opens the gate and a crowd runs towards me.

My family.

My friends.

The ones that I left long ago.

I cry as they get closer to me, and once they finally reached me, the first thing I do was something I'd never do in a long time.

I hugged my mother.

"Ladies and gentleman, Britta's mother Kameron, her sister Katherine, and Britta's friends! They weren't expecting the return of Britta, but Britta, we welcome you back!"

I get to my sister and give her a big squeeze. I reach everyone else, and the boys decided to give a group hug with me.

I missed them all a lot.

-another mystery person

I wait for her at the gates. Holding flowers in my hands.

People were giving me looks like I'm weird to have flowers at a football game, and then they realize it once they see me.

A group walks out of the gates and I see her.

I hear someone say, "Britta, we have a surprise for you."

Finally she got to me with her back turned to me. I touch her shoulder and she turns around.

She looks up and starts to tear up and covers her mouth with her hand. She's shocked.

With that, I hand her the flowers.

"Yes, sweetie."

[did you expect Britta's dad to come back. In the first book, he was in prison for quite some time. But now he's back!

QOTC: If you can change your name to anything, what would it be? Well, my name is Maddie, but I would change my name to Kelsey or even Jenna because I was almost named Jenna.
