39. is this real?

~Kristen POV~

Zayn, Niall, and I run into the lobby of the hotel where Niall runs up to the counter and asks where maternity level is. The woman says it's on the third floor, so we run up the stairs to the third floor.

When we reach it, we run to the maternity ward and we find everyone else sitting there. "Are you Rachel Horan's husband?" One of the doctors talking to Louis asks Niall.

Niall says yes and he is taken back to the birthing area.

"Where's Harry?" I ask sitting down and catching my breath.

"He's with Liz. Since she and Jessie got a divorce like last week, he couldn't come in for the birth of twins. So she asked Harry if he can come in." Liam answers reading a magazine. "Becca went with Rachel."

"What took so long for you three to get here?" Nicole asked. Of course we had a run-in with media.

"Paps found us." Zayn answered taking a seat. That's when everyone suddenly looks at me.

"What?" I asked confused.

"Was that your first paparazzi experience?" Eleanor T. asks. I nod. "I'm surprised at how well you handled it."

I sigh. "If you excuse me, I'm gonna go out the back." I excuse myself and get up. When I reached the bottom floor, I exit the back way and pull out a cigarette.

There's just a lot on my plate. Helping out with this case, trying to piece clues together, paperwork, explaining past experiences I don't want to relive, a fucking lot of stuff. I blow out a cloud of fog until I reach the cigar butt. I throw it on the ground and stomp on it.

"Excuse me." I hear a little voice. I jolt to sudden surprise. I look around and I don't see anyone.

"Who's there?" I ask at ready.

"I'm behind you." The voice answers. I turn around and see a girl who looked about fifteen or sixteen. She was wearing a tattered shirt and shorts with an old baseball cap on her head. Her blonde hair looked greasy as if she hasn't showered in days.

"Are you okay? You look worried." I ask.

"I'm fine. I just need to find a phone."

"Are you lost?" She shakes her head no. "You want to use my phone?" I ask pulling out my phone. "Who do you need to call?"

She replies with "The police." And with that, I put my phone away.

"Well, you happen to be talking to someone associated with the police. I'm officer Kristen Gregory. Well, not officer but I am an intern."

The girl's eyes widen. "Oh my god! I need you to come with me!" She yells pulling me. "I I I was running and and and I found this house and and and...."

"Sweetie calm down!" I say. My phone buzzes and I don't know how I got Nicole's number.

"Come back up. Please." The text said.

I put my phone back in my pocket and turn to walk back in. But then a sudden guilty feeling came inside of me. I look at the young girl, and without thinking, I speak.

"Want to come inside with me?"

Her eyes start beaming as she runs past me when I open the door.

"Where are we going? And I still need to tell you about...yeah." She says as I walk towards the elevator. I push the button and when the elevator opens, we step inside and head to the third floor.

The girl, who's name I later found out was Amelia, told me about how there was this house in the woods occupied by two burly guys. The house was unsanitary and she overheard a conversation which she vaguely remembers.

"And then one of them went upstairs cuz he heard someone crying and then the other guy went up behind him. Next thing I heard was upstairs and there was thumping, screaming, and sobbing." Amelia states.

"Do you remember anything else?" I ask.

When the elevator stopped, we exit and walk towards the maternity area where Amelia recalls one thing that changes the entire case.

"One of the guys said 'well the only news we heard regarding Britta was that Rachel girl going into labor' but I'm not sure if I'm right. He did say Britta or something."

Britta.

Oh my god.

I have to tell the others.
