9. Chapter 9

Eventually Robin found his way back to the small alcove that they had slept the night. He had taken a few wrong turns, and had to hide behind a bush when some passer bys had appeared, but luckily the streets were basically deserted which made it a lot easier. He climbed down the grassy river bank and peered into the dark, small hole in the side of the bridge. His heart missed a beat when he found it empty, with just a small cardigan which Favel had used as a pillow the night before. He frantically looked around him trying to see if his sister had wondered off anywhere but there was no one to be seen. He climbed back up the river bank and walked along the crumbling, unused bridge to see if he could see her. But he couldn’t.

“Favel!” he yelled, pacing up and down the bridge. He knew he couldn’t draw attention to himself but she had to be found. What if Master Napier had taken her? He asked himself anxiously. He kicked himself for not bringing her along with them. Why was he so stupid! Unexpectedly there was a cry from behind him. He swung himself around and saw a figure running up the bridge. Favel. He thought he was going to cry with relief as she ran into his arms, gripping him tightly.

“You stupid girl!” he shouted at her. “Why didn’t you stay here! I thought you’d been captured!”

“I’m sorry” she panted. “You’d been gone for hours and I was starving so I headed out”.

He shook his head, why were sisters so bloody annoying? He thought to himself.

“Don’t do that to me again!” he exclaimed. “Anyway, we’ve found a place to stay, there’s this boy called Ronan and he’s letting us sleep there for a few nights. I left Keziah with him, I seem to think that they’ve become quite attached”.

Favel rolled her eyes and laughed. “Are you sure we can trust him?” she asked suspiciously.

“Fai, we can’t trust anyone” he kissed her forehead and she pushed herself away.

“I know, are we going to go back there now?” she asked him, tying her hair back from her face.

“I’m not sure, I don’t want to intrude on him. I think he is only letting us stay because of Keziah” he rolled his eyes disapprovingly.

“Haha” Favel laughed. “You need to stop being all over protective it’s really not cool, she’s nearly fifteen you know”.

“I just want to look after her, I need to do it for mum, it’s what she would want me to do”.

Favel nodded her head and they stood there in silence. It was an extremely hot day, the sun was at its peak so they headed towards a group of trees and rested there for a while. Favel tore out blades of grass and Robin fell asleep in the cool shade. He tossed and turned for ages, occasionally crying out so Favel wrapped her arms around him and stayed there for a while. About an hour passed before Robin awoke with a start.

He sat up, realizing where he was.“I think we’d better head back” he said inbetween yawns. “I’m slightly worried about Keziah and it’ll take us about three quarters of an hour to get there”.

Favel stood up and sighed, she hadn’t had much of a rest last night and her legs ached.

“I keep thinking about her” Favel began, and Robin swung around to face her.

“Yes, I wonder what they’ve done to her”.

“Does that mean you think she’s…”

“Dead? Maybe, maybe not. But they need us don’t they?”

“To find out what she told them, yes they do” Robin sighed.

“I think they’d hurt us anyway” Favel stepped onto the cracked pavement.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, even if they did kill her they would probably hurt us, to punish us just because she’s our mother”.

“They couldn’t do that” Robin shook his head and walked beside her.

“They would, and you know they would. Master Napier and the whole of the government, you know how corrupt they all are. They want revenge, they want blood, our blood”.

“Fai, they’re not vampires” Robin joked.

“But you know what I mean” Favel looked at him under her thick lashes, a smile playing on her lips.

“I do, and that’s why it’s really important”.

“What is?” she asked.

“That we hide”.
