Set in 2050, this story is based upon two societies that are at war, the Broads and the Narrows. The main character Keziah Bellamey and her siblings Favel and Robin are caught up in the middle of the war and are now on the run for the rest of their lives. Master Napier wants them dead, but can they stay hidden forever? especially as Keziah falls in love with Napier's son....

5. Chapter 5

Keziah woke up the next morning with a throbbing headache. She pulled herself up to a sitting position and ran her fingers through her knotted hair. Favel lay asleep next to her, her mouth slightly open and her breath calm and steady. She hadn’t seen her sister look so peaceful in a while now. Her brother was standing outside, peering out towards the city that she herself had admired last night.

“Morning Kez” he sighed, looking towards her with a thoughtful look on his face.

“Morning Robbie” She stood up and wrapped herself around him, burying her face into his shoulder as she had done when she was younger. He stroked her back and sighed again, ‘what were they going to do?’ he asked himself regretfully. Keziah unwrapped herself from his body and stared into his hazel eyes.

“So…” she started. “What now?” She seemed so eager, like a child yearning for an adventure. He had admired the strength in her. She had never given up in any situation and always had a bright, hopeful spark in her eyes. She was extremely beautiful for a fourteen year old he had thought on many occasions.

“We need food, and a proper shelter” he pointed to the small, damp alcove and frowned.

“What?! I was beginning to get quite attached to our new home” she joked, grinning at him.

“I’m afraid that the bathroom is a little too small for my liking, and the kitchen could do with a lick of paint” he smiled at her.

“When you say bathroom, do you mean the small puddle in the corner?”

Favel stirred suddenly and sat up with a yawn. “Morning” she murmured sleepily.

“Keziah and I are going to go look for some food, do you want to come or do you want to stay here? Robin asked her.

“I’ll stay here” she replied, shaking her hair out of her face. “But be careful!” she warned them.

“We will” Keziah answered, following her brother up the overgrown path.

“I don’t know what to do Kez” Robin shook his head. “We are penniless, and I’m not allowing us to steal anything”.

“We could beg?” Keziah suggested.

“No, we’d be reported to the orphanage and then Master Napier would certainly find us”.

“We could knock on someone’s door and just ask for some food?”

“That’s basically begging” he replied softly.

“Well what else are we going to do?!” she exclaimed.

“I don’t know, I honestly don’t know”.

They seemed to be on the pathway for ages until it led them round to a road lined with houses. They were a good hour away from the town and Master Napier (hopefully) wouldn’t find them here, although they still were extremely wary. Robin had decided to use Keziah’s plan and they had searched the streets trying to find the ‘friendliest’ house to knock upon. Keziah pointed out a cottage right at the end of the road, the front garden was filled with flowers and it had a welcome sign at the entrance. Robin took a deep breath, walked along the stony pathway and knocked lightly on the wooden door. The siblings waited outside for what seemed like forever and eventually gave up, no one was home.

“It’s such a shame” Keziah sighed. “It looked like the sort of place that would help us aswell”.

They wondered aimlessly through the streets again looking for another house but they all looked somehow menacing and cold.

“What about this one?” Keziah shouted from the other side of the road.

There weren’t as many flowers in the garden as the cottage but the garden did look pretty enough and the red brick walls reminded him painfully of their own home. He nodded at his sister and made his way through the garden and down the path, Keziah at his heels. Robin knocked twice on the door and waited for about ten seconds before the door swung open. Keziah gasped.
