3. Chapter 3

The children soon realized that outrunning the men would be impossible, and they panicked. They had run across the square and now were sprinting down the residential area, dodging the piles of rubbish and nearly colliding with bits of rubble that scattered the roadside. The men - who seemed to be in their late twenties, were directly behind them and they were seconds away from being caught. Keziah, who was the youngest of the siblings suddenly shouted out.

“Drew! Get to Drew!” she was panting, her brown hair cascading down her back as she ran. The others followed her but one of the men had grabbed Favel and was shoving her towards the floor. Robin rushed back to his sister, punching the man who held her firmly in his grip. Robin too got knocked to the floor by another one of the men and he groaned in pain. Keziah, instead of trying to help them, ran in the opposite direction screaming as loudly as she can. She reached a small, dilapidated cottage and banged her fists onto the door screaming as loudly as possible. The door was answered suddenly by an elderly lady who looked at her in surprise.

“Drew! Please get Drew!” Keziah begged, clutching at the stitch that had begun in her side. Seconds later a big built man appeared from inside, carrying a kitchen knife.

“They’ve found us!” Keziah panted. “Quick, they’ve got Favel and Robin!”

Keziah started to sprint back to where she had left Robin and Favel but they were already being dragged away. Drew flung himself towards one of the men, knocking him sideways and lifted Favel from the ground. Robin – who was clawing at another one of the men suddenly got thrown against a crumbling brick wall and doubled over, crying out in agony. Drew knocked the man to the floor and rushed to Robin, heaving him over his muscular shoulders. The girls had run back to the cottage and were panting uncontrollably. The elderly lady – who was called Edith, had brought them inside and sat them on some wooden stools in the sitting room. Drew suddenly burst through the door and slammed it shut behind him. He lowered Robin onto the rotting sofa and examined his bruised chest.

“What on earth happened?!” he exclaimed to the girls.

“We were in the hall and Master Napier spotted us” Favel told him, inbetween breaths.

“We didn’t think that he had noticed us! We thought we had blended in!” Keziah added weakly.

“And then we ran away, but those men followed us and we didn’t know what to do” Favel said, gulping down some water that Edith had given her.

“Well you can’t stay here” Drew sighed. “This will be the first place that they look”.

“Where should we go then?!” Keziah exclaimed.

“I don’t know, but I am your mother’s best friend, they know that this is where you will run to”.

Everyone suddenly sat extremely still as they heard voices from outside.

“Knock on everyone’s doors, they must be found” a man shouted.

“We have to get you out of here” Drew lifted Robin up and he winced in pain. They all headed towards the back door and stepped out into the garden. It had started to get dark and the air was hot and sticky.

“Can you walk?” Drew asked Robin cautiously.

“I think so” he replied. The children climbed over the back fence silently and lowered themselves into the alleyway that stretched behind the houses.

“Go, find somewhere to hide, but you can never come back here” Drew warned them.

He hugged the three children and they looked at him regretfully.

“I’m so sorry that I can’t help you, but please just do this for your mother, she would want you to be safe”.

There was a banging on the front door. Edith walked back inside to answer it.

“Goodbye” whispered Drew, and he watched as the siblings quietly slipped into the night.
