Overnight Princess

A story of how I went from being plain old Becky (Cooper to Si) to being Princess Rebecca of Ishramnia. Of how I gave up my normal life to follow in my late fathers footsteps.

1. My 18th Birthday

“Happy Birthday!” I opened my eyes and found my mother and baby brother, Lee, at the foot of my bed. Looking at my clock I saw that it was seven. Rubbing my eyes I saw that Lee had a present in his hands, whilst Mum had the post. “Where’s Jon?” I asked. Jon’s my step father. “Dad had to go out. But look! How come you got a bunch of post but I only ever get a couple of cards!” He whined. I rolled my eyes and took my cards. “Happy birthday sweetheart.” My Mum said as I took them. “Thanks. What’s in the box?” I said, glancing at the box in Lee’s hands. I put all my post on my bed side table as I reached for it, but before I had a chance to take it, he screamed “It’s a laptop! How come Beck gets a laptop! I want one!” And after he put it on my bed he went running out of the room. It’s really hard to believe that Lee is eleven. You’d think he was about four! Both mum and I rolled our eyes at the same time. “It was meant to be a surprise, Jon brought it for you. I really wish you’d try and get along with him. Anyway, this is from me.” She passed me an envelope. “What’s this?” I said dropping the letters I was already holding. “All your life you’ve asked me about your father and here he is. Everything you’ve ever wanted to know. But, I’m not going to make you open it. There are some things that will shock you, or possibly upset you. Your eighteen now, officially an adult.” I took the letter and placed it on my bed side table. “Mum, I don’t really want to know. It’s been eighteen years, without so much as a card. Whereas Jon, I know we don’t always get on but his been in my life for twelve years. My ‘father’ hasn’t even bothered. I don’t need him.” I replied. I did mean it, but at the same time I couldn’t help but be a bit upset. All my life, I’d seen little girls with their dads, or been to a wedding and seen the father/daughter dance and felt so jealous. Jon had tried to be a Dad, and he is a great one – but no matter what he did I could never bring myself to call him Dad. “Alright, I’m going to go and make breakfast. Sorry Lee ruined the surprise. You can set it up if you want. I’ll bring you your breakfast in about twenty minutes, okay?” I smiled in response and started opening my letters. I’d sort out the laptop later, possibly when Lee was about. Knowing him, he’d probably brought the most high tech one he could find. He liked all the gadgets. I flicked through all the envelopes, and hating myself for wanting there to be an envelope with writing I didn’t recognise. At least then I’d know he at least cared. When I saw it I couldn’t help but sigh. There was my name and my address in the fanciest writing I had ever seen. However, in the corner was HRH. I knew that this stood for His/Her Royal Highness. I assumed this was a weird joke and opened the letter. Scanning through it, I gasped and ran out of the room. “Is this a joke! According to this letter, not only is my father dead, he was also a prince!” I screamed at my mum. Calmly, she turned around. “I didn’t know he had died. But yes he was a prince. There’s a small country, called Ishramia. It doesn’t appear anywhere, because the royal family – your family – have paid quite a lot of money to have it the most private place on Earth. Hardly anyone knows its there. It means they don’t get a lot of tourists.” I felt faint. So mum had known that I’d had a prince for a dad and she’d never thought to mention it? “How did you meet?” I found myself asking. “I was seventeen, he was nineteen. He wanted a vacation, away from Ishramia and so he had come to England. By chance he walked into a cafe, where I was working part time. He spoke perfect English and asked for a Galopianus. When I told him I didn’t know what that was, he went bright red. Not wanting him to be embarrassed, I grabbed a pot of coffee, two cups and led him to a booth. He explained that he wasn’t from here – well, I’d already gathered that from his sexy accent – and a Galopianus was the best drink you’ve ever tasted. We hit if off and he suggested we go out for a meal. He hadn’t told me he was a prince. If it wasn’t for the fact that his cousin, Steve, had come looking for him I doubt I would of found out. But I’m getting a head of myself. Anyway, after we had been together for about two months, your father was settled in England. He had a flat and a job and all was going well. That was, until Steve came. Jack and I had been having lunch when he came through the door. I don’t know how he had found Jack, I just remember thinking why was this man here. Your father had a conversation with Steve which ended in a few sentences. “This is Steve. My cousin. I have to go home. I should never have abandoned my life as a prince. Good bye.” And with that, he walked out of the door, and out of my life. I found out I was pregnant with you a few weeks later. And well, you know everything about you growing up. I couldn’t find Jack and I wasn’t sure I wanted to. I promised myself I’d be enough for you.” She ended her speech with a loving tone, and she was quick enough to catch me, just as I fainted.
