Careless -Complete-

You were my best friend. We did everything together. You were my first laugh, my first trouble, my first time. Then you left when I needed you most. So Liam, please tell me why you're back. I want us to be the same but how can that be? We can't because back then we were careless...and I'm a mother now.

11. Soon

“Happy birfday mommy!” Jamie yells as he jumps on top of me. I was in a dreamy sleep when my little boy decided to wake me up.

I softly smiled, as I’m still tired. “Come on, wake up!” “What time is it baby?” I croaked.

“Time for your breakfast!” “Breakfast?!” I couldn’t hide the urgency in my voice. “Yes, I made you breakfast. I’ll go get it.”

I couldn’t smell anything so what could he have made. He’s nearly three for crying out loud, he can’t even reach the counter top.

Moments later he came waddling in here with a rather large bowl of cereal in his hands. The milk spattered off the side as it seemed to be a difficult task for him. I sat up and reached out my hands so I’d take the bowl. “Thank you” I smiled and kissed his forehead.

I ate my cereal. Yes it was soggy. Yes it had too much milk. Yes the spoon was small. But it was the thought that counted. I love my baby boy.

I was in the kitchen cleaning dishes and clearing off the table when Jamie stepped in. “Mommy?” I turned my head, “Yes, baby.”

“C-can you sit?” I slowly nodded, not sure what was going on. I walked to the table and slid out a chair for me to sit. He stood in front of me and fiddled with his fingers. “What’s wrong, Jamie?” He shook his head, “Nothing. I juss nervous.” “What about?”

“Yesterday when you had work and you took me to Liam’s…” he trailed off. He calls their shared house Liam’s house. They offered to watch him while I went to Nando’s for a shift. I was thankful for their offer. In all truth, I was lonely. Jamie is always with me because there was never another place.

After my shift Niall offered to take me out to eat as an early birthday celebration. I was very grateful.

“Uncle Louis helped me make a poma.” I cocked my head to the side, “A what?” “A poma.” “You mean a ...poem?” “Yes!” he smiled. “He helped me make it for your birthday. I just don’t know if you gonna like it.”

“I’ll love it no matter what” I reassured him.

I watched as he left the room for a few seconds before returning with a crumpled paper. He straightened it out with his little fingers and squint his eyes. Was he reading?

“Y-you are my m-mommy and my best fr-friend. You s-sing to me a-and read me stories. Y-you make me laugh when I’m sad and always love me. B-but today I-I wanna take care of you because you de…des…dessserrrrve it.”

He looked at me over the edge of the paper and his cheeks tinged. I sat there emotionless, still trying to process his words. Tears pooled in his eyes, “I knew you would not like it” he whispered. I shook my head as a smile spread across my face. “No, baby, I love it. Come here.” I wrapped my arms around him and kissed his temple. “It’s the best poem I’ve ever heard.” “You think so?” he mumbled into my neck. “Yes, that was very nice of you and Louis.” “He drew pictures so I’d remember” he smiled. He pulled away, showing me the paper. It had lots of drawing and little symbols that made up his letter.

I felt my eyes water. “Don’t cry, mommy.” I smiled through my tears. “I love you my sweet boy.”

I carry Jamie in my arm, settling him on my hip as we walk from the parking lot to the Nando’s building. Yes I have work on my birthday and it sucks. I clock in and start my shift. The boss is giving me ninety minute brake instead of sixty for my birthday. Jamie offered to help with the tables again. He’s working extra hard to refill drinks and ask the costumers if their food is okay, but he’s so small that it’s hard for him. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t cute when he got a soft V in between his brows from frustration. I kiss it away and tell him to relax for a bit.

As I walk out to a new table with new costumers, I’m surprised to see Harry and Zayn seated at it. They smile at me as I stand before them. “What’re you guys doing here?” “Just came to wish you a happy birthday” Zayn smiled. “Why thank you!”

“I got you something.” “Oh no, Harry, you didn’t have to.” He shrugged, “Too late.”

He stood up and out of his back pocket he pulled out a long box. He opened it and pulled out a necklace. I lightly gasped at the sight. It was silver with a small Super Man sign pendant.

“Oh, Harry, thank you.” I leaned up and pecked his cheek. “No problem” he smiled. He reached around my neck to snap the necklace in place. I shyly glance around the room at our close proximity. He clips it and runs his finger along the cool material, brushing my skin in the process, forming chills.

“I love it, really” I smile. “I’m glad.”

“Thank you guys for coming out here. I really don’t celebrate my birthday and all but thanks anyway.”

Zayn raised an eyebrow, “You’re not staying here and working, are you?” I shrugged, “I sort of have to.”

“Harry!” I heard Jamie’s voice cheer from behind me, along with the pitter patter of his feet. He ran past me and into Harry’s arms, which kneeled down to hug him. “Hello, little guy.” “Today’s mommy’s birfday!” He chuckled, “I know, I got her a superman necklace.” “She loves him!”

“No matter what Louis or Jamie told you, I also helped with the poem” Zayn said. I giggled, “I had an idea. Thanks Zayn.”

“You know, we’re leaving tomorrow and we want you and Jamie there to wish us farewell.”

Gladly Jamie hadn’t heard and was too busy messing with Harry because I didn’t want him to start crying. I nodded and through my sorrow I put on a smile. “Of course.”

“They’ll be back soon.”

I tried to soothe Jamie from my position in the driver’s seat. He was in the back, buckled up and sobbing. We were on our way to the airport and he’s been crying since we left the flat.

“But why do they go?” he whined.  “They have lots of things to take care of in other places. They can’t be here all the time.”

“But I want them too!”

I sighed and continued my drive to the right terminal.

“Can we go see Lea, so I can tell her about them?” his voice cracked.

“Yeah, Jamie, we can go.” Jamie and I occasionally drive miles and miles to the graveyard to see my baby’s grave.  I get really emotional when we visit but Jamie likes to talk to her and imagine she’s talking back.

We parked and got out of the car to enter the building. “Hold mommy’s hand when crossing the street.” He placed his small hand in mine and we walked into the terminal.

We got our gate passes, went through security and walked out to their gate. There was barely anyone here and security lined up. They let me through, knowing that I was with the guys. “Ed, over here.” I turned my head and saw Liam and the rest of the guys seated on the seats by their gate. I walked towards them while Jamie tried and wipe away his tears. Since I was carrying him, he buried his head into my neck. “It’ll be alright” I whispered as I rubbed his back. Niall gave me a questioning look. ‘He’s crying’ I mouthed. His mouth formed an ‘o’. He was the first to walk towards us. He took Jamie from my arms and frowned when he saw his tears. “Don’t cry Jamie, we’re not that special” he joked. Jamie lightly smiled through his tears and wrapped his small arms around his neck, giving him a hug.

Louis folded me in his arms. “It was great meeting you, love.” I smiled into his shoulder.

“Uncle Louis!” I let go of Louis and say Jamie pushing against Niall’s chest with one hand and reaching to Louis with the other. Louis smiled while taking Jamie from Niall’s arms and hugged him.

Niall came and hugged me goodbye and so did Zayn. I’m gonna miss these guys.

Harry smiled down at me and wrapped me in his arms, nuzzling is nose in my hair and inhaling deeply. “I’m gonna miss you, Eden” he mumbled. “I might just miss you more” I sighed. I expected the kiss to my cheek so when it came my cheeks slightly tinged but when he captured my lips…unexpected. The kiss was so demanding. His lips were soft and firm on mine. I kissed him back, as this may be our last time. He pulled away with a smirk playing on his reddened lips. I giggled, “Bye Harry.” We hugged one more time and he then pulled Jamie into his arms, saying their goodbyes.

I looked around for Li but I couldn’t really see him. A tap on my shoulder made me turn around. Before I could process who it was, I was folded into their arms. Liam. “Oh, Eden, I’m so sorry.” His voice was hoarse and his words cracked towards the end. His saddened state made tears run down my cheeks. “I’m gonna miss you so much” he said. I buried my face into his shoulder, hoping he’d somehow rub off onto me. The strong and compassionate boy I once knew. Oh Liam.

“You take care alright?” He said once we pulled apart. “Promise you’ll visit soon” I whispered. “Only a few months, maybe half a year. Real soon.” I nodded. He wiped my tears with his thumbs and leaned down, kissing my forehead.

“Li!” Jamie chirped as he came barreling towards us. Li kneeled down and embraced Jamie in a hug. Jamie had been crying with red rims around his eyes. “You take care of your mom.” Jamie nodded and. Li gave a kiss to his forehead before hugging him one last time.

I’m breaking here. I never even got the chance to tell him.

Oh Jamie, your dad does love you.

A/n: How's it so far? Is it good? Tell me what you guys think! I love reading comments and getting feedback for my stories. Should I make teams? Is that too cliche? Like team Harry or Liam?

Tell me!

Love you guys and thank you!
