Careless -Complete-

You were my best friend. We did everything together. You were my first laugh, my first trouble, my first time. Then you left when I needed you most. So Liam, please tell me why you're back. I want us to be the same but how can that be? We can't because back then we were careless...and I'm a mother now.

10. Don't tell

“What did you say to Liam yesterday after I left?”

Harry called me early this afternoon to see what I was doing later. He wanted to come over and I was just straightening up.

“I told him I didn’t want to see him anymore” I mumbled quietly through the phone. He sighed, “Why’d you say that?” “He was judging me. I didn’t like it. He…he used to be my best friend, Harry. The guy I see now isn’t Liam.”

“Eden, a lot can change in three years.” “I know, I know. I just miss it.”

“He’s been down ever since he got home. He hasn’t even left his room and the bitch-troll keeps coming over to see him.” “The bitch-troll?” “Sophia” he answers. I want to laugh but the nature of it wouldn’t be appropriate.

“You should talk to him sometime before you come over” I tell him. “No, YOU should talk to him. It’s not my place to ask what you said but whatever it was must’ve been hurtful.”

“Alright” I groaned. “I’ll talk to him tomorrow…maybe.” “Eden!”

Harry’s POV:

“I’m leaving” I told Niall as I passed him on the way to the door.

“Where ya going?” Niall asked. “To Eden’s.” “Oh, I see” he smirked. I laughed as I rolled my eyes. “She’s fit.” “I know right” I winked and grabbed my keys before leaving out of the door.

When I get to her flat complex, I park and get out of the car. I walk up the steps of the building and to her door. After knocking I wait a few seconds until she opens the door. “What’s up with the shades?” she inquires. “Well, hello you too” I laugh, leaning down and kissing her cheek. She tinges.

“I don’t want the paps to see me, they might follow me here and trust me you don’t want that.”

“Alright Mr. Celebrity” she sarcastically states, stepping aside to let me in. It’s quiet. “Where’s Jamie?” I ask. “Napping, thank heavens.” “What’s that mean?” I smile as I follow her to the kitchen where she offers me a drink. “They don’t call them Terrible Two’s for nothing” she giggles.

“As you can see, I made food. It’s in between time so let’s just call this linner. I hope you like chicken tacos.” “Love them” I smiled. “Excellent! I also have movies if you want to watch those” she suggested. “Wow, so prepared” I teased. She rolled her eyes, laughing.

We ate our ‘linner’ then sat in the living to watch a movie or two. We decided to watch Man of Steel, of course.

I like this.

Just hanging out and being myself.

I can do that anytime really with my family and the lads but this is different.

Just to find someone who likes me for me and not Harry Styles. I like Eden. She’s so carefree and young. She can be playful at times but a mother when necessary. Well, that’s what I got from the few days that I’ve known her.

“How old were you when you auditioned?”

We were asking one another general questions, trying to get to know each other better while the movie was our background noise.

“Eh, sixteen?” “Really? So you’re only nineteen?” I chuckled, “Yeah, you’re not that much older than me.” “That’s where you’re wrong, Styles. I’ll be twenty in three days.” “Three days?! You didn’t tell me.”

“It’s not that big of a deal” she shrugged, tucking her legs under her to sit on them. “Yes it is! Twenty is an official adult, a new decade, no longer a teen! You should’ve saw Niall a few days ago.” “I know who’s excited about their twentieth birthday” she teased, poking at my cheek. “You could say that” I chuckled.

“You cold?” I asked as I noticed her shiver. “A little.” “You wanna wrap ourselves and watch another movie?” I ask. “Yeah, I’ll get covers” she says and begins to stand up. I stop her, “I got it. Tell me where.”

She warmly smiled and plops back down on the cushion. “My room, first door on the left, in the closet.”

I nod and make my way down the hall and to her room. Being careful not to wake Jamie with my loud steps.

I enter her room, it’s…Eden. Her walls are plain yet decorated with small pictures. Making a quick scan, I see some of her and Jamie and others of her and some other boy. Is that Liam?

Shaking my I search for the closet and slide it open. On the top shelf there are fluffy blankets, just as promised. When I slide the blanket off the top, a flat box falls with it.

The lid of the box falls open. I place the blankets on the floor, kneel down and pick up the lid. I stop when I see something that catches my eye.

Certificate of Birth

I scan over it and my eyes widen.

Noah James Payne (A)

Mother: Eden Angela Hill

Father: ______________

There’s another but it’s addressed to Lea Adeline Payne (B).

“Wha?” I muttered, confused.

Liam and Eden?

He wasn’t there? I think and think, and then it clicks. The dates on these are October, 12, 2010.

Liam was already on the show with us by then. She never told him? If he would have known, I’m sure he would have made an effort to be with her during all this time.

“Harry, what’s tak-…”

Eden pushes open the door and sees me with the certificates and an exasperated face.

Her smile instantly drops and her face pales. “Don’t tell Liam…” Her voice is a croaked whisper, straining not to cry.

My assumption is correct.

“What?” I stand with the documents at hand. “You-you can’t do this. You have to tell him.”

She shakes her head, hung low but I could still see the tears streaming down her rose cheeks.

“You can’t not tell someone that they have a kid. It doesn’t work that way.”

“He doesn’t care anyway. He wouldn’t care” she whispered. “Listen to yourself, Eden. We’re talking about Liam here. He’d have to understand.”

I try to soothe her but in reality, I’m confused. I thought they were friends and the realization that she had his child is chilling. Something I’d have never expected in…ever.

“Come on, Eden.” “What am I supposed to tell him?” she raised her voice. “I got pregnant by my best friend, Harry. That’s not supposed to happen! What does that make me?”

I know in her mind she thinks she’s some sort of whore but she isn’t. I know she isn’t.

“Makes you a mother.”  “Obviously…” she murmured.

“Can you just…put them back?” I wearily nod and place them back in the box they came from. I reach up and place back the box, still confused.

“I just didn’t know you and Liam dated.” I shook my head in wonder. “We didn’t” she quickly answered.

“Wha?” “It was just one night of careless, stupid, curiosity.” She bit back her impending sobs. “You got something great out of that stupid night” I smile. “What?” she scoffed.

As if on cue he sleepily waddles into the room. She lightly smiles at me before leaning down and picking him up. “You had a good nap?” He nods, rubbing his eyes with the backs of his hands.

“Looks just like him” I mumble. She glances at me before sadly nodding.

“You have to promise not to tell” she said. “Eden, you have to…” “And I will…when I’m ready just promise.”

I see the innocence in her eyes. I nod, “I promise.”

Eden’s POV:

Getting my car back has been the best thing that’s happened this week. I’m free! No more walking…thankfully.

The first thing I did when I got it back was take Jamie to the park. The same park Li and I used to go to as kids. Ever since he left I came here every chance I got. Coming here made me feel like a kid again.

“Higher, mommy, higher!” Jamie cheered as I stood in front of him, only slightly pushing his swing. “You might fall, baby.” “Oh please!”

I laughed at his pouty face and gave in, only pushing him a fraction higher but he still seemed pleased.

His boyish giggle is so cute. After a few minutes, his eyes widened. “Okay, enough. I’m dizzy.”

I laugh at his expression and stop the swing. I kneel down in front of him so we’re eye level. “You are a silly little boy. You know that?”

“I knew I’d find you here” a very known voice says from behind me. I glance over my shoulder and see Liam. I stood up and turned to face him. “What are you doing here?” I mumble. “It’s our park” he smiled. I gave him a look, showing him that I wasn’t in the mood for his…Liamness.

In all serious, I was nervous. Did Harry tell him? Oh please no. I’m going to tell him…one day.

His smiled drops and he turns sadder. “I came to apologize.”

I hold up a finger, relief flooding through me, telling him to hold on. “Why don’t you go play on the slide? I’ll be there in a little while.” He nods and runs off to the other kids. I turn back to Liam.

“Continue…” I cross my arms over my chest and begin to listen.

He stuffs his hands into his pocket. A nervous habit of his as I remembered.

“Ed, the other night…I wasn’t judging you. It’s just- I’m still trying to wrap my head around all of this. Not that Jamie’s here but YOU’RE here. I haven’t seen you in years and now here you are all…different. A good different. You actually have a responsibility and I commend you because of it. But…when I saw you with Harry, I don’t know, I felt weird. Unwanted in a way. The only guy I’d ever seen you with was me and it left me confused. Very confused. Just please ignore what I said the other night…please. I was being dumb and…well myself.”

The gaze we held was different. I felt like he was trying to say something deeper but, being Liam, he couldn’t.  A small smile played on my lips. “I forgive you, Li.” He smiled and folded his arms around me, embracing me in a warm hug. I missed Liam. So much that it pushed me into depression.

He kissed my forehead and rests his chin on the top of my head, as I wasn’t very tall. I wanted him here, I wanted to tell him everything but I was scared. What will he say? What will he do? Would he regret that night? I didn’t.

I say it was stupid and…it was but I definitely don’t regret it. I had wonderful babies because of it. Babies…

I sighed, preventing myself from crying thinking about Lea. My baby left to get better.

Speaking of leaving…

“Why didn’t you tell me you were only here for a week?” I mumble into his chest. He held onto me tighter, not saying anything. I pulled away and looked up at him. “Hm?” I encouraged. He sighed, “I didn’t want to upset you. I know how you feel about me leaving. We’ll be back soon.” He rushed the last part.

He knows how I feel? Yeah right.

He wasn’t the pregnant one. Yes, we made love and had mutual feelings for each other but he has no idea how I felt. He wasn’t the depressed one. He wasn’t the one with the kids. He wasn’t the one that’s been living on their own for the past two years. He wouldn’t know. He wouldn’t understand.

The thought running through my head plagued  me but it didn’t show. I forced a sad smile.

“I guess we’ll see each other again soon” I mumbled, looking down at my knotted fingers. He took my hand and entwined it with his. He then pulled me into another hug.

This wasn’t us. Him leaving all the time. It wasn’t and I hated it. Why can’t he just stay?

A/N: Sorry for not updating in a while. Dedicated to Kevin! (Janae). She's been patient haha.
