3. Invitation

I heard the sound of apprehensive hands on my door as I was finishing up my homework one evening November. I smiled to myself, I went to the door and opened it. There stood Mazon quietly smiling at the floor, a flush of bright red spreading over his handsome face.

"I haven't even knocked yet."

"Super sensitive hearing. I heard you shuffling your hands." I said.

"Oh right, Rose, do you want to go to the Fall Formal with me?" I thought about the last dance I'd attended and whispered,

"I'd love to."

"Great, er Jennyfer, Jolene, and Martha invited you to go dress shopping after the sun sets tonight."

"Tell them I'd love to join them."

"Great, well good night Rose." I leaned in to kiss his cheek, but clearly surprised he turned his head so my lips touched his. Fireworks went off in my head as I moved my lips with his. I haven't felt this way since Stephen kissed me. I pulled away remembering Mazon had to breathe.  "Wow." he said as he blushed redder than the garden's tomatoes.

"Good night Maz." I said as I slowly shut my door. When my door was shut I slumped against it and fell to the ground. Kissing Mazon was confusingly wonderful. I felt as if I was betraying Stephen in some way. But if there was a chance that Mazon was Stephen then I could have my little Caroline back. I could have her again. Hold her, raise her and love her again. I smiled to myself as I heard the familiar click clacking of my female friends shoes on the wooden steps. Although school has been started for two months the girls haven't visited my chambers until now. I open my door before they even reached my bedroom. "Hey girls."

"Rose! Oh goodness what a climb!" Jolene giggled. "Suppose it doesn't bother you or Mazon for that matter does it?"

"No, come in," Jenny, Jolene and Martha shuffled into my room and stopped mid stride as they took in my bedroom.

"You live in here? By yourself?" Jennyfer said astonished.

"Yep, have lived here since I was five."

"You weren't made into a vampire?"

"No...I was born just as Anna was and my daughter. My whole family besides Stephen were born."

"Cool. Oh where does this door go to?"

"My daughter's room." I said casting my eyes to the floor. Remembering that door being pulled open and my blonde curly haired daughter come bouncing out of it into my arms overwhelmed me and I fell to the ground in tears.

"Oh Rose we're so sorry. What horrible memories."

"No not horrible Martha just sad now."

"Tell us about her, maybe that will help some?" Jo said.

"Alright. Well Caroline was my first and only child with Stephen. She was perfectly innocent, something unheard of in a vampire child. She had gorgeous sea green foam eyes, and curly blonde hair that was almost invisible in certain lights. She was human, until her thirteenth birthday and then she would lose her blonde curls and her green eyes for them to be replaced with black hair and silver eyes. The trade mark of the Silver Family, unfortunately my family was killed before her sixth birthday. I was not there. I could not foretell the events of that night! Its my fault." I cried.

"Rose, its not your fault. Its those humans. They couldn't understand what could make a woman or a whole family look so a like to one another. They couldn't understand why you didn't go in the daylight." Jolene said reassuringly.

"Yeah I suppose your right."

"Let's go shopping!" Jennyfer said. The four of us got up and I wiped my tears looked at Caroline's door one last time and followed my friends to the shops.

The first boutique we entered I was surprised at how many tasteful dresses there were. Of course Jenny and Jo decided to try on the least tasteful dresses; ones with sky high hems and plunging neck lines. Martha and I clucked like mother hens until finally they settled on a turtle necked mini dress. Jo's was green and Jenny's was orange, I smiled they were perfect dresses for them. Marti had a dress as well and now their attention was on me. Even as a woman in the 1800's I hated shopping. I groaned as they led me to the aisles of dresses.

"We have to make you look hotter than you already are! Mazon is going to flip when we're finished with you, welcome to the twenty first century my darling." Jolene laughed.

"Now you sit here while we go and look for dresses. What's Mazon's favorite color?"

"Burgundy." I said without thinking. "Well Maroon like our blazers." I added.

"Perfect." The three girls disappeared. Great, only you Louise would be stuck shopping with three human females. One by one her friends appeared, all equally burdened with mass amounts of dresses of all different material. I groaned as they led me to a changing room. "Alright, here's Jo's choices." A pile of dresses cascaded down around me, all a different shade of Burgundy. I sighed as I picked them up and discarded the ones I knew I would never wear. I tried on a strapless deep burgundy gown, with tiny rhinestones carefully sewn into the fabric. It shimmered with every movement I took. I carefully opened the door and my three friends dropped whatever was in their hands.

"I love this one. Sorry girls but could you look for shoes now?" I said.

"Of course." Jenny said as she and Martha put their choices in the 'return' bin. Jolene came over to me and checked the price tag. She whistled, I didn't care how much it cost, I was rich. As most vampires are. Jennyfer came back first with a pair of ultra high heels the color of midnight with a silver toe like a crescent moon. I waited to make my decision, waiting for Martha to return. When she did she held a pair of sling back heels that matched my dress. I was drawn to Jenny's pick and I asked Martha to find me something to put around my neck and something for my hair.

"Jenny I love these." I said as Martha retreated to the accessories. I smiled as I changed out of my dress and returned it to its hanger. When I was dresses in my uniform Martha returned with a four row diamond necklace and a matching bow for me.

"Oh Martha they're beautiful." I gushed. We gathered our things and went to the check out.

As the days neared the Formal the hustle and bustle in the school seemed to increase. Mazon was becoming more bold, during breaks he would hold my hand, before we left each other for classes, he'd kiss me good bye and when we parted for the night his kisses left me dreaming of only him. Finally the night of the dance came and the girls gathered in my bedroom. Our dresses hung from my wardrobe and Jolene was busy doing my make up. Jennyfer was doing my hair and Martha was doing my nails. They all looked like perfection before they came up here to put on their dresses. When they finished I looked more amazing or so they said since I can't see myself in the mirror. They helped me lace up my dress and I slipped on my shoes and Jo put the necklace around my neck and placed the bow on the side of my head where my bangs disappeared behind my ear.

"Rose you look beautiful, its a shame you can't see yourself." Jenny said.

"Take a picture," They did so, I didn't expect to show up but I did and I look amazing. It was the first I'd seen what I looked like since my Wedding portrait.

"Thank you guys this is the best feeling in the world."

"When's the last time you saw what you looked like?"

"About two hundred years ago give or take." I answered. I continued talking and helping them until we all looked equally as attractive as any super model now a days. "Ready?" I asked just as three knocks alerted us to our dates. I smiled and went to open the door. Mazon, Sebastian, and Marcus stood there. Looking very handsome. Marcus took Jolene's arm and Sebastian took Martha in his. Mazon smiled at me and slid his fingers through mine. Jenny smiled at us and saw Justin just entering the hall way. He looked at Jenny and smiled. The eight of us made our way to the ball room, a room I haven't entered since my wedding.

"Thank you for inviting me to go with you." I whispered to Mazon as we entered the room.

"Was it an unexpected invitation?" I blushed.

"Not really but I wanted to thank you, you had your choice of many girls here and you chose me."

"You're different from everyone else. I feel like I've known you for a very long time." he answered as he swept me to the dance floor. "Rose, I've never felt like this about anyone."

"Me either. Well not in two centuries."

"Yea, Rose;"

"Yes Mazon?"

"I think I love you." His words brought tears to my eyes.

"I think I love you too Mazon." The music slowed some and he brought me close to him. As we swayed to the music he kissed the tip of my nose and I felt as if I was floating.

"Have I told you lately that I love you
Have I told you there's no one else above you
Fill my heart with gladness
Take away all my sadness
Ease my troubles that's what you do."

Mazon sang to me, mimicking the recorded song as it played around us. His eyes never leaving mine as he sang to me, as if the song was meant only for us to hear. I began to sing the next verse,

"For the morning sun in all it's glory
Greets the day with hope and  comfort  too
You fill my life with laughter
And somehow you make it better
Ease my troubles that's what you do."

Then he took over,

"There's a love that's divine
And it's yours and it's mine like the sun
And at the end of the day
We should give thanks and pray
To the one, to the one

Have I told you lately that I love you
Have I told you there's no one else above you
Fill my heart with gladness
Take away all my sadness
Ease my troubles that's what you do

He spun me around as he sang, never missing a beat, as we danced a crowd formed around us, swaying slowly their hands on their chests. Happy tears sprang up in my eyes, as he spun me around, the dance was a blur and I loved him more with each word he sang.

There's a love that's divine
And it's yours and it's mine like the sun
And at the end of the day
We should give thanks and  pray
To the one, to the one

And have I told you lately that I love you
Have I told you there's no one else above you
You fill my heart with gladness
Take away my sadness
Ease my troubles that's what you do

Take away all my sadness
Fill my life with gladness
Ease my troubles that's what you do
Take away all my sadness
Fill my life with gladness
Ease my troubles that's what you do."

As Mazon finished I reached up and kissed him. "I love you Mazon. I really do." The crowd dissipated and a new song began but it wasn't the same. It was too fast and I was becoming tired. I haven't hunted in a while and being around all these humans was taking a toll on me. Mazon noticed and led me from the room. We walked up the six flights of stairs. Hand in hand until we reached my bedroom.

"Good night Mazon. It was amazing. Thank you." memories of our dance came back to me and I kissed him again before opening my door.

"Good night Rose." He turned and walked down to his bedroom on the third floor. I smiled and quickly changed into jeans and a sweater Mazon had given me I slipped on sneakers and braided my hair down my back. I opened my window and dropped the six stories that was my home. I landed on my feet and without a moment hesitation I took off into the forest. Tonight I would hunt. The moon's invitation was all I needed. I let out an animal like snarl as I searched for my first victim.
