12. The Party- Harry’s Story

(AUTHOR'S NOTE: I know I suck and that I haven't posted in a long time. I've been going through a lot lately. But I'm back now. -Rileyes)

“This got weird,” I say.

“Don’t worry. It gets weirder,” Harry replies as he picks at his hangnail.

“Louis never explains why he flashed everyone at the ceremony?”

“It all comes out at the party.”

“Which is really random by the way,” I point out. “Louis was just like,” -I lower my voice to sound like him- “‘Oh, I got suspended for five days, but hey we are all going to go to this party this weekend.’”

Harry raises one finger to my lips, “Shhh. It will all make sense, young grasshopper.”

I smack his hand away. “Don’t call me that.”

“I don’t get why you guys are forcing me to come,” Liam sulks in the back seat.

“Because it’s going to be the biggest party of the year- of the century even!” I say excitedly.

“What makes you so sure of that?” he asks in the same monotone voice.

“Trust me,” Louis says turning into a neighborhood, which I’m guessing is Richard’s. “It will be. And besides, like we said, you were either coming willingly or we were tying you up and locking you in the trunk.”

Liam leans his head against the window. “I’d love to see you guys try.”

“We are glad it didn’t have to come to that,” I turn around and smile at him.

“Oh please. Even if Zayn and Niall weren’t with their girlfriends right now and were here to help you, I would still be able to kick all your asses.”

Louis and I laugh. “Then one day you will have to prove it,” I say.

As Louis continues to drive deeper into the neighborhood, we begin to hear music blasting and begin to feel the bass shake Louis’ new car that he got a couple months ago when he got his license. Louis is a year older than us but started school late so we are in the same grade. He wasn’t technically allowed to drive us yet, but no one needs to know that. He pulls up outside a huge three-story house with glass doors as clean and clear as crystal. It was definitely bigger than my house. By looking through the glass door, I can see there are barely any lights on in the house. There seem to be a strobe effect and every few seconds a different colored light will flash. The music was deafening from outside. Smoke was coming out of one up the upper room windows and unlike any other party I’ve been to, no one was sitting on the lawn outside.

“This looks a little too crazy,” Liam says what I am thinking.

“Stop being a downer,” Louis says turning off the engine. He opens the driver’s door to get out, “Come on.”

I get out as well, because what else am I going to do?

Liam moans and does the same. We follow Louis up the path leading to the door. He opens it and walks right in with us close behind. As soon as we walk in, a bunch of voices call out “Louis!”

Five members of the football team, including Richard, come up to him happily. Richard slings his arm around him, clearly already wasted.

“You, my friend, are the most badass freshman I’ve ever met!” Richard yells over the music.

Louis shrugs, “So I’ve been told.”

They laugh and walk away with him.

“Well, bye then Louis,” I mumble.

In front of us is a big staircase leading to the upper level of the house. To the left of us is a doorway and the lights are flashing from the other side of it. To the right is a hallway that leads to a much quieter place, but that could be just because the music to the left is so loud. My left ear is losing hearing by the second.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Liam turn around for the door.

“Where do you think you’re going?” I ask.

“Louis won’t notice I’m gone. Please, Harry, don’t be a dick about this. Let me leave.”

I shake my head and wrap my arm over his shoulder to lead him in the same direction the football members took Louis to the right down the hallway.

“Have some fun for once.”

“I have tons of fun with Andreah, thanks.”

The room is crowded with people sitting on couches and there is a big plasma TV on the wall that isn’t powered on. The lights were dim and people were either talking or making out.

“Is that why you want to go so much?” I ask. “To be with her?”

“Well, duh.”

“Why didn’t you invite her?” A group of cheerleaders by the couch ahead catches me eye. I check them out to see which one I want to talk to and notice one in particular.

“She has more important and better things to do than go to this lame party,” Liam snarls at me.

I smirk at Liam. “You sure about that?”

He gives me a confused look before I nod my head in the direction of the girls in short shorts and low cut tops. Andreah is in the middle of them, red cup in hand.

Laim’s eyes widen and for a second he looks stunned. Then he runs up and pulls her away from the group. I make my way to the group of now confused looking girls.

“Hello, ladies.”

They all turn their attentions towards me. A few fix their hair and some step closer.

“Hey, Harry,” Ashley smirks at me.

I feel my heart stop a little bit as I notice her for the first time. Her long blonde hair is up in a sleek ponytail, and on her is a gold, tight shimmery top that wasn’t hiding anything and a pair of black shorts that would never be allowed in school. Memories of the past week flood my mind. The girls start to talk to me, but all I can think about is getting Ashley back in bed…

No, that was a one week thing. It’s over now. Focus on someone else.

I grab the hand of the girl closest to me and pull her through the kitchen connecting the kick-back room to the dance room. We walk through crowded rooms of people until I finally find the room with the curtain of heat at the entrance. We push through the bodies of dancing teenagers and find a spot in the middle. I haven’t even seen the girl’s face before she starts grinding with me.

Her hips move with mine to the beat. Slow at first and then faster as we got more comfortable. Her hands are on top of my hands which are on her hips and her back brushes against my chest as we dance. I pull one of my hands away from her hips and move all her dark hair to one side of her neck, leaving the other side bare. I lean down and begin to kiss up her neck. My lips trace up to her jaw and then back down to her shoulder. I gently start sucking at the skin and as I do, I feel her hand go up to my head. She entangles her fingers in my hair, to make sure I stay there. When I pull away, I hear a faint moan come from the back of her throat.I look down at the mark I made; a large red circle on the side of her neck. No doubt it will be there for the next week or so. I gently bite her ear. She turns around and next thing I know her lips are against mine. It isn’t longer before her tongue is in my mouth. She tastes minty and sweet at the same time. She pulls away from me and grabs my hand, leading me out of the sweaty room and to the front of the house. Her friends stare at us as we walk by, but she doesn’t stop or say anything to them. She pulls me up the huge wooden staircase and I continue to follow, mind blank. She drags me into the first bedroom she sees and locks the door behind us.

I shut the bedroom door behind me, feeling pretty pleased with myself.

The music is still blaring and I make my way downstairs. I make a stop at the kitchen to get a drink to chug and look around for my friends. Louis is still with the football and a few cheerleaders and Liam and Andreah are nowhere to be found.

“Hey!” I feel someone pat my shoulder. I turn around and see Niall and Veronica.

“Hey, man! Where have you been?” I ask, noticing the strong smell coming from him.

“I’ve been making the rounds! Catching up with people!” he yells and finishes what is left of his cup.

“I never knew Niall was so social when he’s drunk,” Veronica laughs.

“You should drink with me. You need to get on this level,” Niall slurs a little.

Veronica laughs and shakes her head. “I don’t drink,” she says to me now. “I keep telling him but he seems to keep forgetting.”

I laugh, “Where did you find whiskey, Niall?”

“In the backyard! I hate that cheap shit these type of parties usually have! But we went in the back yard and there are coolers and tables set up of nice, expensive alcohol. You want some?”

I shake my head, “No, I’m good with beer.”

“Your loss, man.” He begins to make his way to the living room, stumbling and tilting.

Veronica rolls her eyes. “I should help him. See you later, Harry.”

I watch as she grabs Niall’s arm and leads him to one of the many couches in the living room. I notice a familiar face leaning against a wall in the hallway.

“Hey, Nicole,” I say. I guess I had startled her because she jumps a little. “Whoa, it’s okay. It’s just me; I didn’t mean to scare you.”

She gives me a small smile, “S-sorry.”

“I’m surprised you actually came tonight. When I mentioned I was going you seem pretty disgusted at the idea.”

She shrugs. “I guess I just wanted to get out of the house.”

I look down and notice the completely full beer cup in her hands. “You might want to slow down on the drinking,” I joke.

She shrugs again. “I-I tried it, not a big fan.”

“Would you like me to take it off her hands?”

She shakes her head.

“Oh, you want to give off the illusion that you are drinking?” I smile.

“I-I guess.”

“Well, here,” I grab the cup, chug three-quarters of it, and hand it back.

“What’s with the stutter?” I ask before I could even think. Right after, I feel sort of bad asking because I’m not quite sure if this is a touchy subject.

She looks at the ground. “I don’t know. I-I stutter when I’m nervous.”

“Why are you nervous around me? I’ve been living with you for the past four days.”

The past four days had gone by very slowly. It wasn’t awful or anything but comparing them to the days spent at Ashley’s house, they were just boring. We would go to her house after cheer practice where she would stand off on her own while all the other girls talked to each other until they did the cheer again, then we would eat and make some small talk, next she would ask me if I needed help with any of my homework, I would say no, and then she would spend the next few hours doing homework until midnight, only pausing for dinner. Her parents were really nice to me. They were at first very surprised when Nicole first brought me home, but they welcomed me anyway and let me stay in their guest room. While Nicole spent her time doing her homework, I was forced to do the same since I really didn’t have anything else to do. I really should have brought my Xbox 360 over, but I didn’t think about it. And it would have felt rude asking her if she could drive me to my house just so I could pick up my game console. So I just finished all my homework for the first time in a while and watched a lot of TV. I think all of my grades have gone up at least 3% because of this, but I know they will just go back down when the week is over.

Oh well.

Nicole shrugs. “I-I’m nervous around everyone.”

“But, why? You’re on the cheer squad. You must have friends there?” I know I am pushing her and m brain is telling me to stop but my mouth wouldn’t listen.

“I-I did.” Nicole continues to keep her gaze down. “A-and then junior year everyone got boyfriends and just sort of left me behind.”

“And you didn’t get a boyfriend?” I ask.

She looks up at me. “Y-you’re like the first guy I have actually talked to in almost a year. I was sort of seeing this one guy over the summer before junior year, but then he and my best friend since elementary school started dating. And because of this she didn’t want me to be around him so she cut me out. And now they are everyone in the school’s favorite couple and the homecoming king and queen.”

I feel my stomach fall a little. Nicole rolls her eyes and makes a face at her cup before downing what I had left in there. Her face shows disgust as the alcohol burns down her throat.

I held in my surprise at the fact that she finished her cup and that she was opening up to me. “That’s awful. I’m sorry you had to go through that.”

She shrugs. “I-I think that’s why I started stuttering. I didn’t really talk to anyone for a while. And now when I do I get really nervous.”

“Well,” I say, “You don’t have to be nervous around me. I’m your friend.” I smile at her.

She looks at me with a blank expression. “Great.”

“Well don’t be too excited about that,” I laugh.

She shakes her head. “Sorry. I-I just-” she shakes her head again. “Thank you.”

I nod.

“Can you come with me to get me some more?” she asks, gesturing to her cup.

I take it from her. “I will get you some.” And before she says anything, I make my way to the kitchen. I pour some more beer into her cup when I feel a hand on my back.

“Hi, Harry,” I hear Ashley’s voice.

I feel my heart beat quicken but I play it cool.

“Oh, hey.”

“So, I was wondering,” she says as I feel her hand travel from my shoulder, down my chest to my stomach and finally resting on my hip. “What it would take to get you to come upstairs with me.”

“And do what?”

She raises her eyebrows. “What we usually do.”

“I thought it was only for that week though?” I ask.

Ashley takes the cup from my hand and downs it.

“Why not add one more night?” she speaks. She bites her button lip and I know I am done for. I let her lead me upstairs.

I pull my shirt on over my head and leave the room with Ashley still in it getting dressed.

I look around for the source of the noise.

“Psh! Harry! Over here!” I see a head of black hair sticking out of one of the bedrooms.

“Zayn?” I ask as I make my way over to him.

He grabs my arm and pulls me inside the room, quickly shutting the door behind me.

I look around the empty room. Just grey walls and a bed. But the smell of it was that of a locker room.

“Are we in Richard’s room? Where’s Natalie?”

“She’s in the bathroom. And yes, this is Richard’s room.”

“Okay…” I notice Zayn holding something behind his back. “Why are we in here?”

“Well, I was walking by the room and just thought I might as well poke around. I always thought there was something weird with him. Bullying Niall and then buying Louis and then stopping bullying Niall and now the whole football team is best friends with Louis. It’s all so weird,” he says.

I shrug, “I guess, but I don’t think snooping through his room will help figure out anything.”

Then Zayn moves his arms from behind his back and holds a metal box in front of me. I take it and look at him.

“Is this supposed to be something important?”

“Look at the bottom!”

I turn the box upside down and a sticker with the words “Property of Mission Niguel High School” written on it.

I laugh, “God, our school is so cheap they have to put their name on a metal box.”

Zayn shakes his head. “You don’t get it! That’s the box they use to keep the slave auction money in!”

I look back down at the box in my hands. “What are you saying?”

“Remember how I said the football team left the second auction early? I think this is what they were doing! I think they made Louis moon everyone for a distraction.”

“You’re insane.”

“Right after he got suspended, Louis was telling us about this party. That’s why he wanted us to come so badly! He knew it would be an epic party because of all the money they could spend on it.”

“Louis wouldn’t just steal thousands of dollars.”

“Peer pressure changes people.”

I shake my head again.

“Harry, think about this: All the nice alcohol, the lights, the DJ, not to mention all the other stuff going around at this party, all of that costs money.”

“Richard is rich, he wouldn’t need to steal. He has his parents’ money.”

“He couldn’t have secretly taken the money because that is way too much money to disappear unnoticed. And what parents would be okay with giving their kid money for this type of party- with all these minors smoking and drinking in their house? Besides, they aren’t even here. Apparently they’ve been on vacation for the past two weeks.”

“How would you know that?”

“I may have accidentally listened to the messages on Richard’s house phone answering machine.”

“That part was an accident, I swear. I hit the button on the machine by mistake while making out with Natalie and I didn’t know how to shut it off. Answering machines are confusing.”

I shake my head not knowing what to think about any of this.

Could this be true?

“That doesn’t matter now,” Zayn says. “We have to find the guys and get out of here. If this was a normal party we could get in trouble for being here. Imagine how much shit we’d be in for getting caught at this party.”

I nod and give the box back to Zayn. He puts it back in the closet where he found it and we make our way back downstairs. I notice Nicole still standing alone in the hallway- with no cup in hand.

Shit, I completely forgot.

“You go look in the dance room for the guys, I will look in the living room,” I say to Zayn. He nods and leaves. I go straight to the kitchen to fill up a cup of beer to give to Nicole.

“Here you go: one cup full of apparently expensive beer, as promised,” I say, handing the cup to her. “We should probably get going soon, though.”

She rolls her eyes and takes the cup from me, draining the contents in a matter of seconds.

“Gee, I wonder what took you so long,” she says harshly.

“Sorry, I was-”

“Save it, Harry. I know exactly who you were doing.”

She rolls her eyes again. “Never mind,” she breathes out before storming away towards the dance room.

“Nicole, wait!” I call. I begin to run after her but loud voices from the bottom of the stairs catch my attention.

“Don’t you dare, asshole!” Richard is yelling at another member of the football team. Louis is next to him.

“I’m the asshole?” The football player responds. “That’s funny.”

“Warren, listen,” Louis chimes in. “Think about what you want to do here. Think about the repercussions this will have on so many people.”

“Yeah, but if I don’t tell, think about all of the repercussions it will have on me! I would lose my scholarship!” Warren exclaims. “I have to do it.”

Warren tries to move towards the door, but Richard connects his fist to Warren’s face. Warren falls to the floor.

“Rich!” Louis yells.

“Fire!” Someone calls from the kitchen.

Louis and Richard exchange looks before running down the hallway. I follow. A crowd of people run in the direction away from the kitchen and make it hard to get there quickly. Once finally there, I see the room filled with smoke. The bright orange flames come from the stove top. I see Richard start digging through cupboards and Louis grabs the extendable sink faucet and begins to spray water on the stove. It doesn’t help much.

“Help me find the fire extinguisher!” Richard calls to me.

I open the set of cupboards next to the one he is looking through and move aside all the bowls and cups inside. I don’t find anything and then move to the next cupboards and so does he.

God damn, they have a lot of cupboards.

I see a flash of red and quickly pull out the large metal can, causing glass plates to crash to the floor. I pull out the clip, aim the hose, and squeeze the top of the can to make the white foam come out. After about thirty seconds, the fire finally dies.

“Crap,” Richard exhales when he sees the damage. The cupboards about the stove were black where they were once white. “How do I explain this to my parents?”

“Just say you were cooking something and a towel caught fire,” Louis says, patting him  on the back.

“Yeah. Because my parents will believe that I tried cooking.”

Louis laughs.

“Why the hell did you punch that guy?” I ask. “What was he going to do?”

“Harry, it’s complicated,” Louis says.

“Oh look, another secret my bes friend is keeping from me.”

“Harry, I’m sorry but I can’t-”

The sound of sirens interrupt him.

“The cops are here! Everyone get out!” Someone yells.

People start running through every exit they can: the back door, the garage, windows, everything.

Richard’s eyes grow wide. He grabs Louis by the shoulders. “Lou, you have to help me.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Louis pushes him towards the back door. “You and the guys just get far away from here.”

“Thank you so much, Lou. I owe you.” And with that, Richard and a few other football players follow the crowd running.

“Louis, what the hell is going on?” I ask angrily.

He shakes his head. “You just need to get Liam, Niall and Zayn out of here.”

“There you two are! We need to get out of here!” Niall runs towards us with Liam, Andreah, Zayn, Natalie, and Veronica close behind him.

“That’s just what I was telling Harry. You guys have to go.”

“Aren’t you coming to?” Liam asks.

“I can’t.”

“You don’t have to take the damn blame for them, Louis,” Zayn pleads.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Louis rolls his eyes.

“We know about the money,” I say. “We found the box in Richard’s room.”

“What’s going on?” a sobering Niall asks.

“I promise I will explain later just please, guys, leave.”

I shake my head. “I’m staying with you. I’m not letting you take all this blame on your own. I think it’s stupid for you to do this, but I’m not leaving you. I’m not letting my best friend go through this alone.”

“Same here,” Zayn says. “Maybe they will go easier if there’s more than one person behind it.”

“That’s stupid, no they won’t,” Louis argues. “Just leave.”

Liam turns to Andreah. “You have to get out of here. Take the girls in your car and let Veronica drive. You haven’t been drinking, right?” Veronica shakes her head. “Good. Let her drive. Just get far away from here. Okay? I will call you in the morning.”

Andreah nods and kisses him softly on the lips before heading towards the back door. Veronica and Natalie do the same to Niall and Zayn before following her.

“You all make me sick,” I say.

“You guys should go too. Don’t do this,” Louis begs one last time.

We all just sit on the couch. A second later, the police barge in. Along with the high school principal.

“Harry!” Anne calls from downstairs. “I’m home!”

“Coming!” he calls back. “You have to go now. I have to help her with the groceries.”

“But there’s still so much left I don’t know about!” I exclaim.

“Jenna, go talk to your boyfriend about it.”

“He won’t tell me either.”

“Then just bribe him with a striptease or something.”

I roll my eyes. “Very funny.”
