24. ch24

The rain was pouring down as Arcum looked at the tall building with bars on the window and the city’s and town’s name draped before the word Police over the door. It was chilly outside and Arcum felt every cold droplet on his head as he pulled his hood off of his head. He could feel his heart race but he knew he needed to do.

“No more hiding.” Arcum reminded himself as he looked back to Winter and Greave. He started to wonder how could Greave live with herself day by day knowing that she has hurt so many people and taken so many lives that she is still able to care for Winter and teach her enough to protect herself in the world of the creed that is now no more.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Greave asked while Winter huddled close to her. Arcum was glad that the rain was covering the same tears he shed for the creed when he was inside the hideout. He could see his shadow among Winter’s and Greave illuminating under the streetlamp thinking that this was my family through this experience how can I leave them but they deserve better than another person that rather goes in hiding forever.

“I am.” He said calmly.

“But this is the last chance for you to back out we have plenty of room where we live so you won’t be a bother. Do you really want to go through with this?” Greave rambled as Arcum looked more sincere since he made up his mind.

“Make sure you take care of her you are doing wonderful bringing her up out of the creed.” Arcun said to her face and Greave nodded as he noticed that she too was shedding a few tears herself but he wasn’t sure by the streaks of rainwater on her face as it went from a drizzle to a straight down poor during the conversation.

“I will.” Grieve said in a very soft voice looking like she is trying to stay strong for Winter and Arcum as he looked down at her hands. He could see that Greave was using her nails or something to hold or remind her that she has to stay strong.

“I’m sure.” Arcum sighed and then he went right to Winter and knelt in front of her. She moved her white hair out of her eyes and Arcum can see that she had been crying as well. “It’s ok Winter you can cry.” Winter smiled a slight smile as a tear or a raindrop strolled across her cheek.

“Arcum don’t go.” Winter wined as she threw her arm around his neck. At first Arcum was stunned but then he warmed up to the hug and wrapped his arms around her. The comfort of the hug was warming to Arcum and he wanted the moment to last forever.

“Like I said, I have too much blood on my hands but you have very little and do whatever you want to do and not to waste a moment of it. Promise me that.” Arcum explained looking directly into the innocence in Winter’s eyes. The very same innocence that he had started this journey with and had never faded through thick and thin.

“I…Promise.” Winter got between breaths and it broke Arcum’s heart to see her this way but before he changed his mind he stood and walked up the police building steps.

He glanced behind him to see Winter sobbing historically in Greave’s arms then Winter tried to bolt out towards Arcum but Greave caught her while she yelled, “Arcum, Arcum, Don’t go! Please don’t go!” While she tried to fight out of her sister’s hold.

He wiped the tears from his eyes as he looked directly at the communication box and pressed the button that said “Push here for entrance.” He waited a moment while he can still hear Winter in the background and it is really making Arcum rethink his decision but when a women’s voice, that had the classic operator’s voice, rang through the speaker.

“Police department, how may I assist you?” She asked. Arcum was confused and nervous about doing this but he has gotten this far too where now he has to see it through.

“My name is Arcum. You may not have heard of me but I am here to turn myself in.” Arcum said and waited for the voice return to the speaker.

“Are you armed?” the women’s voice asked and Arcum was bewildered by the question but he shook it off and reminded himself that the creed has disbanded.

“Yes but I am not going to use it. My pen dagger is evidence only.” Arcum said and then he heard a latch unhook with a loud click.

He looked back to Grieve and Winter for the last time knowing that those two had done so much for him. “Now he is doing that one thing that would better everyone else in the world.” He thought as he went on into the building.

Arcum opened the door and a blinding white light greeted him as he went in with his pen dagger in hand. The policeman there didn’t give Arcum a chance to explain the situation about why he has the pen dagger out before they started to yell out several orders to where it confused him.

Arcum just placed the pen dagger on the brown desk and then was tackled to the ground while the policemen and a few women took him away to be locked up and he knew he had made the right choice and had officially got out of the creed forever.
