20. ch20

Arcum had been in this bed for only one day and night was creeping in by each second. He looked around to see if Fear was going to spot him since she has been eyeing him like a hawk because she knew that as soon as he got freed from the chains Arcum would be looking for Winter and Greave to see what their next move will be.

He glanced around and saw that the hall looked clear. Arcum smiled for a moment and found something like pliers, but smaller for something that Fear had planned for. But right now it is the perfect escape tool.

Arcum dug the tool into his right cuff where he cut his mark directly into the lock and moved the place around to the correct spot and paused as he felt a door opening. He quickly moved. He quietly dropped the tool on the table while flipping the covers over himself and making sure that he hid the handcuff that he scratched under the covers to escape questioning.

Arcum silently rolled over away to the sound of the door opened widely and silent footsteps came in but he knew who’s it was since he was trained on the soft steps just like everyone else but each person’s step is a little different. Like Winter’s footsteps was when she snuck into the infirmary wing.

“Arcum?” Winter asked and he was relieved that it was her not someone else since he knows he is in hot water with he creed. He rolled over to see Winter’s saddened eyes that scared Arcum because he was used to seeing Winter’s happiness.

“I’m up.” He acted like he was asleep.

“Arcum I found Greave!” She yelped and Arcum was stunned that she was able to hurry herself to where she can find Greave and then Arum in just a day but it did help her that they were both in the same building.

“How is she?” Arcum quietly asked hoping that Winter would tone down the excitement. Winter stopped bouncing when he mentioned Greave. Her eyes fell to the floor and shifted her weight.

“She’s in the holds and Shiv has already declaimed her as a sacrifice to the creed.” she sighed while holding back tears and looked quite nervous.Arcum didn’t blame her because time was of the essence at the moment.

Arcum quickly grasped the tool that he was using earlier and started to try to unlock the hand cuffs again. The lock wasn’t striped to where he didn’t have to make noise that might attract

“What are you doing?” She asked as she quickly put her hand over his wrist. Arcum was mad that she would stop him from getting free so they both started a mini stare down to where you can see the mini sparks start to fly between them.

I’m trying to get out of this place your sister needs to be rescued before Shiv decides to do away with her.” Arcum said as he sat back and letting the tension between them settle down a little but Winter still had tension in her eyes but it was mixed with a bit of understanding.

“What about the poison? I heard from Fear that it is a double active type of poison.” She rambled and then the clouds parted in his mind that she is like everyone else that doesn’t like Shiv and want him to live to carry out these tasks that will lead the family to a lot larger world.

“I think it has passed. I am a lot stronger than the poison so I will be fine.” Arcum said trying not to sound arrogant but failed. Winter looked at him with disgust since his last statement failed on him.

“You can do as your wish for right now but I know that we have to be sure that you are all right like you did me when I was drugged.” Winter said and she was right they had completely switched roles from caretaker to arrogant child. Arcum felt ashamed about this fact and nodded slightly as Winter calmly moved her hand to his leg and for a short time both were on middle ground.

Winter lifted the object from his hand that wasn’t bounded and started to work on the handcuffs. Arcum was amazed at the quick work she was getting done as she tried to free him and every time he tried to interfere Winter would shrug him off saying that she got the picking down pat during her training.

Come to find out she was right about the lock picking as only a few minutes later he was free from the bounds. The chain fell to the floor with a thud and Winter smiled brightly at the success.

But the celebration didn’t last long when Arcum spotted Fear and Shiv come in from the opposite side of the common way that most people enter and exit. His senses were immediately hyphened by the entrance while she came to his bedside but he forgot to bring over the chained cuff that held his wrist when he turned so he could hide that he was unbound and free.

“I can see that Winter had escaped. And so did you.” Fear sassed as they entered the room.

Arcum’s heart fell to the pit of his stomach when he heard that statement. He can see why Fear got her family name because of her words and that she is a doctor, or at least a nurse that has a lot of practice as a true doctor.

“I want to see Greave.” Arcum demanded and Fear switched to sorrowful eyes while Shiv glanced at him with the death like stare and then nodded to Fear and she got close to Arcum.

“I can’t do that Arcum.” She said holding a needle in her hand. Arcum knew what was happening and he tenced up since he wouldn’t stand down Shiv wants Fear to kill him. He reached for the tool and Winter held it away from him. He was stunned that Winter was a piece of the plot saying that she was sorry and that she didn’t have a choice.

“Arcum please make this simple on all of us and just stay down and take the fall.” Shiv sassed as she grasped Arcum by the shoulder. Fear injected the needle into his skin as he struggled to get fee from the grip of Shiv and Winter as they both held him down since he was punching and staring to feel dizzy as the room spun around in a circle like the effects of the poison only nicer because it was like he was falling asleep than having his last moments alive. He fought to stay awake as he looked around the room as sound muffled and blended while faces faded into just blobs of faces with hair instead of showing details. Soon the liquid won as the last thing that he could hear and see was Winter saying not to worry.
