3. Chapter Three

It was a normal Tuesday morning currently. The sun was out, the birds were chirping, Lux was watching cartoons. The last three Cheerios in my bowl floated around while I stirred my spoon back and forth, watching the little circles of cereal move away each time.

I hadn't done much of anything these past few days, and I didn't want to spend the rest of my summer like this. Tom was out already, running some errands I think. Lou mentioned she was taking Lux to work with her today. Maybe I could come along.

As I put my bowl in the dishwasher, Lou appeared in the kitchen, holding her big bags full of makeup. It looked like she was double-checking to make sure she had everything.

"It's a big day today for the boys, so I can't forget anything here." She explained. I wasn't quite sure who 'the boys' were but I assumed they were some of her clients. I nodded and closed the dishwasher, debating whether to ask or not.

"Hey Lou, mind if I join you and Lux today?" I turned around to face her.

She stopped to push her bangs behind her ear and smiled widely. "We would love that! Right Luxie?" She looked over in the living room, where little babbling noises came from.

"Yeah, that sounds great. Just go get ready because we will be leaving here in a few." Lou continued to check every pocket of her makeup case.

"Cool." I smiled, running upstairs to my room. My closet was filled with clothes that I hardly ever wore and didn't think I ever would. My fingertips brushed across a floral dress, but I thought too dressy. I picked out some black leggings, but that might make me look too underdressed.

Well, Lou always wore some cute skinny jeans and a jacket or something. I found some black skinny jeans on my second shelf and slid them on. They weren't half bad. A flowy crop top caught my eye on a hanger and I tried that on too. It was still summer after all, and I didn't know how warm it would be inside the photo shoot area. I found a cute leather jean jacket and slid that over my arms. To add the some finishing touches, I tied my hair up in a messy bun, pulling out a few strands by my ears.

I sighed, fixing my shirt in the mirror and put some cute earrings in that I found on my dresser. They sparkled in the light every time I moved my head. After admiring my ears in the mirror, I grabbed my bag from underneath my bed and practically ran downstairs.

"You look so cute!" Lou complimented, opening the front door for me. She picked Lux up and held her in one arm.

"Thanks," I laughed. "So do you."

"Eh, I was going for the casual look." She closed the door behind her, and walked us to the car. I hopped in the passenger seat as she buckled Lux in. We took a short little road trip to downtown London, where we pulled into a rather large studio. I was shocked to see hundreds of girls crowding the building, screaming and crying and holding signs.

"Who are they?" I asked Lou, staring out the window.

"Fans." She answered, not even phased. Obviously, this was a regular routine for her. But for me, I had never seen so many people gathered in one place.

We were let in past the gates by security and found a parking spot in the back. We hopped out of the car and I looked back to see girls, squished on the fence, still screaming and sobbing. Lou took my arm and pulled me inside.

"What are they here for?" I followed her down the hall.

"The boys."

Just as I was about to open my mouth to ask who they were, 5 teenage boys ran out and practically attacked Lou and Lux. I felt the urge to help her, but she started giggling with Lux. They circled around her while I stood back and quietly watched.

"Geez! You boys have never been this excited to see me!" I heard Lou laugh again from inside their huddle. I looked down at my hand and pretended to scrape off any nail polish I had left on my nail. Maybe this wasn't as good of an idea as I hoped. The excitement died down quickly as Lou escaped the circle to find me.

"Ah, there you are." She smiled. I put on a smile for her and stood up from the wall. "Boys, this is Paige."

Each of the 5 boys flashed me a smile and told me hello. I felt really shy all of the sudden but I said hi back to be polite.

"This is Liam," Lou introduced me to a tall, muscular boy, wearing a man tank, flashing me an adorable smile. I stuck out my hand to shake his, which was surprisingly soft. Yeah, I do notice these things. It's a weird quirk about me.

"This is Zayn." Lou put her arm around another boy with olive tan skin and a little bit of a beard going on. Tattoos ran up his right arm, like a sleeve, which I thought was pretty cool. I shook his hand too and gave him a little smile.

"This is Niall." Lou walked over to the next boy, who had dirty blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes. He smiled directly at me and shook my hand. I laughed lightly at his firm grip which made him blush and take his hand away.

"This would be Louis." Lou sighed, teasingly and he rolled his eyes at her.

"Lovely to meet you, dear." He smiled and shook my hand quickly. "Ah, what the hell." He pulled me into a hug. I was a little surprised at first but I smiled and wrapped my arms around him. His shirt smelled of mens' cologne and a hint of lemon.

"Last but not least, Harry." I pulled away from Louis and turned my attention to the last boy. He was tall and fit, wore skinny jeans with leather boots, and had curly brown hair that was all messed up. There were also tattoos on his arms, placed randomly.

"Nice to meet you Paige." He smiled, revealing his obvious dimples.

"She's gonna help me out today." Lou wrapped her arm around mine and nodded. "But she's off limits... That means you Harold." She pointed to him.

"What?" He asked, playing back with her. But he laughed and ruined his little performance. I smirked and followed Lou out of the room. As if any boy, especially from a famous boyband, would like me.

We walked into what looked like a dressing room. It had lights along the mirrors and loads of tools in front of it. Tools being cases of makeup and hair things. I graciously took a seat in a leather chair you would usually see at hair salons. Lou's station was right next to it so I got the best seat to watch.

"Harry you're up first." Lou spun the chair around for him to sit on. He winked at me before taking a seat. I rolled my eyes teasingly and chuckled. I had a feeling he was known for his cheeky personality and good looks.

"What is all this for?" I placed my feet up on the counter and swung myself back and forth, looking at a bottle of hairspray in my hands.

"They have a photoshoot today." Lou explained, putting a little cape around Harry's neck. She grabbed a comb and pulled it through his hair. "It's for some teen magazine, I think."

I nodded, pulling my feet back under my chair and set the bottle down. Another lady came in and asked for Zayn to help her choose his outfit for the shoot. He followed her out of the room and disappeared down the hall. Louis and Niall were sitting on the couch across the room, scrolling on their phones. Liam sat behind Harry and I, arm wrestling with a security guard. I tried not to stare at his flexing biceps, but the boy had muscles the size of softballs. How could I not stare?

After Liam won arm wrestling twice, I turned my attention back to Harry and Lou. Harry was making faces at himself in the mirror, trying to make Lou laugh. But she just ignored him and sprayed hairspray across his head, covering his small ears and blocking his face. I crossed my legs on the chair and watched as she made the finishing touches to his "perfect" hair.

"There." She stood back to admire her work. I looked up from playing with my hands and saw Harry smirking at himself in the mirror.

"Nice work." He nodded in approval and unbuttoned his little cape thing.

"Liam, you're up." Lou took the cape and spun the chair for Liam, who graciously took a seat.

The lady who borrowed Zayn returned, but for Louis this time. I sat up, starting to feel uncomfortable from my chair.

"Oh Paige, this is Caroline." Lou introduced me to the woman without turning around. She smiled and waved before disappearing out the door again. "She is the boys' stylist."

Liam sat quietly, watching Lou do all sorts of things with his hair. Eventually, I stood up and walked over to the couch, taking a seat next to Harry.

"Well, hello there." He smiled.

"Hi." I smiled back. "Whatcha doing?" I asked, referring to his phone.

"Twitter." He turned his phone to show me his profile. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram... those things never attracted my attention. It seemed pointless to me. Despite the fact I had no friends.

"Cool." I tried to keep the small talk up, considering Harry was the only one who actually made an attempt to talk to me. The other boys seemed nice but obviously didn't care for me. They probably thought I was just another intern or co-worker.

"Were all those girls out there your fans?" I spoke, remembering the craziness outside. Girls clawing through the fence, screaming and crying.

"Oh yeah," he chuckled. "They're ours." He said it like he was proud of them. I thought he was insane.

"Are they always like that?" I sat back into the couch.

"Not all of them." He shrugged, putting his phone down. "Some are more quiet and secluded than others."

I furrowed my eyebrows, trying to imagine girls like that being 'quiet.' I would consider them to be more like me, staying in their rooms for half of the summer and reading or something. Although, that didn't make me seem very exciting.

"Zayn, you're up." Lou announced, letting Liam up from his seat. Zayn stood up from the couch Niall and him were sitting on and walked over to the mirror.

Just as I was about to open my mouth and ask Harry something, Louis appeared in the doorway.

"Harry, Caroline wants you." He pointed out the door. Harry pushed himself off the couch and fixed the bottom of his shirt.

"Catch ya later Paige." He smiled and disappeared out of the room. I smiled back, watching him leave.

"So you and Harry, yeh?" Louis smirked, taking a seat next to me. Niall's head popped up and he looked over at us. I tried not to notice him and focus on Louis instead.

I sighed and rolled my eyes. "It's not like that." I shook my head.

"He's quite the charmer." Louis shrugged, nodding. "And I think he likes you." He whispered.

"I agree with Lou." Liam passed by us with his fancy, quiffed hair and sat behind him on the armrest. Great, another person to embarrass myself in front of.

At least Niall hadn't moved.

"I really don't think he does." I disagreed.

The thing was, I didn't even want to date anyone. Especially from a boyband with paranoid fans. Harry seemed really sweet and funny, which was the type of guy I liked. But it felt more like we would be good friends. And it doesn't make any sense why a boy with fame and fortune and fans would like someone like me. I'm probably the most average person out there.

"I guess we'll see." Louis smiling like he had some sort of plan.

Lou and Caroline finished dressing the boys just as someone else came in to tell us to bring in the boys. All five of them stood up and walked out of the room in a group, following the man.

"Did you want to come with? I'll bring Lux with too." Lou stopped next to me on her way out.

"Uh, sure." I pushed myself off of the comfy couch. Lou carried Lux and lead us down another hall to an even bigger studio room. Huge lights were placed everywhere. Cameras were set up in the middle, pointed towards a white backdrop. Tons of workers were gathered around the boys standing in front of the cameras.

We approached them and Lou handed over Lux to me. She took out her smaller case of touch-up makeup and waited for her needed help. Each of the boys were dressed nicely. More on the casual side of clothes, but still nicer than some of the things people wore these days.

I bounced around with Lux in my arms, trying to keep her entertained. We walked around a little bit, looking at empty boxes and plastic props. There were framed pictures covering the wall that were each a different cover of this magazine. I recognized a few celebrities on them; Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Hilary Duff, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens... to name a few.

I glanced at the clock, noticing we had already been here for almost an hour. Lux was resting her head on my shoulder and I decided we should probably go check back with Lou. We found our way back to the photoshoot and saw the same crowd surrounding the boys.

Flickers of light flashed across the room. The boys were messing around, jumping on top of each other and making silly faces. I stood next to Lou, watching them curiously.

"Alright thanks boys, that's all for today." The man behind the camera waved them off. Niall jumped off of Liam and Zayn patted Harry on the back. They all came back over to us, smiling and laughing. I had to look up at most of them, which made me feel small. A few of them greeted me nicely and I smiled back. I carried Lux back to the dressing rooms and gathered my coat and bag.

Lou was packing up and getting ready to leave. I didn't know where the boys went or how to find them. So, I figured I could just wait in the car for Lou. Unfortunately, all the long, winding hallways looked the same. I tried to remember how we got in as I wandered around, looking for a familiar path.

It was quiet in this part of the building. My footsteps were the loudest noise echoing off the walls. I bit the inside of my cheek, continuing to walk forward. I knew I would get myself lost, I should've turned around a while ago. The lighting was slowly dimming the farther I walked, decreasing my confidence in my concious.

In the distance, I heard muffled conversations. I let out a relieving sigh and headed toward the noise. But the closer I got, the louder the conversations became. I turned down another hallway and found myself facing a large pair of doors. Assuming it was an exit, I pushed the doors open and was immediately shocked to find myself frozen in front of a crowd of about a thousand people.
