12. Skyline - Chapter Eleven

“Skyline,” started a woman, named Marini, “Is what you have stumbled across, Kaliska,” She looked over at me. We sat at a table, all of us. There were more Skyborn than I expected, though I didn’t really know what to expect. Everywhere I looked shining eyes looked back at me.

“We are The Skyline; the group of Skyborn fallen, or pushed to earth for whatever reason. Good or bad. But Skyline is here to keep The Skyborn safe from the dangerous world around us. New Skyborn are taught how this planet thrives, manners and general knowledge of how to blend in. We know now that many Humans know of our existence, but the majority are sworn to secrecy, the others have been or are being dealt with.” She finished on a grim note.

“Dealt with?” I asked, fearing the worst.

“That’s right; the humans who would not keep our existence a secret were killed. After many discussions and reasoning’s with them, of course,” she explained.

“As I was saying, Skyline is what you are now part of; Kaliska,” She gestured me, every pair of eyes looked at me. I felt the blood pulsing through my cheeks.

Skyline invited me into their open arms, I was taught about humans, and how to act around them. I was taught their ways and how people live. How the whole purpose of a human’s life is to get a good job, and earn enough money to pay the bills. It seemed pointless, learning about humans; it’s not like I ever wanted to be one.

Skyborn were quick learners it seemed; though it made perfect sense. We had excellent memories and were far superior to humans.

The appearing tattoos were explained to me; it seemed that everybody had a pair of wings inked beneath their skin, though I was told that it wasn’t ink. A normal, human tattoo was made by using a needle to inject ink under a human’s skin, but it appeared that the tattoos appearing on us Skyborn were created by blood, leaking and staining our skin. Though they were not red, or in any way blood like. The other members of Skyline had their own wings bled on their back; they called the tattoos Imbuet, Latin for stains.

Everyone had a feather on each of their wrists; Marini said it was there to bring us together, to prove that we are one. We believed every word she said.

The Skyline head quarters, that Nio showed me on my first day in the city, was an old, hidden bed & breakfast. There were many rooms, but we still had to share. I was in a room with Naledi, or Dee, as she liked to be called.

“Rock. Paper. Scissors!” We chanted together. I positioned my fingers so my hand looked like a pair of scissors. Dee had hers clenched in a fist.

“NO!” Dee shouted at me, falling backwards onto the bed, giggling.

“You can choose rock, paper, or  scissors!” She continued to giggle, hysterically. We had played many times and I still didn’t understand the rules.

“I give up!” I said, throwing my hands into the air, in surrender.

“You go and play rock, paper or scissors with somebody who knows how to play!” I said  joining in her laughter, it was irresistible not to.

Dee taught me a lot about humans and their silly little gestures and games. She told me of love also. She told me that love is when you know that you would not want to live without a certain person. And that person can make you smile or laugh, for no reason. That no matter how many flaws they have, you love their flaws in every way. That is when you are in love, she told me. The idea of love intrigued me. I had asked her how she knew so much about love. She replied by saying that she has experienced it herself. She said she is in love with one of the boys here, in Skyline. That he loved her back. I had asked her who, but all she had done was winked at me and tapped her nose.

Soon I knew nearly as much as the other Skyborn...I’ve got to stop doing that...Soon I knew nearly as much as the other members of Skyline. We aren’t Skyborn anymore, I have to get over that.

It’s going to be difficult. I’ve been here for nearly a month and I still can’t get it into my head that I will never be among the stars again.
