2. Part One - Skyline - Chapter One

The probability of landing on the solid ground of earth and dying instantly is very low, as it’s mostly made of water. But as I fell, I noticed I was going to be the unlucky one, and I’d only been human for a couple of minutes.

What a shame, I thought as I saw the ground below me. It was night time; below me was an open field, full of crops, near a check work of houses. I saw a city not far away, it shone brightly. It was beautiful, I was glad this would be my last view of the world. My last thoughts. The hardest part would be watching my life flash before my eyes. Seeing my sister, smiling down at me. Singing me to sleep; her voice was so sweet. I won’t say her name; it hurts too much. She was killed by a meteor shower on Palioxis (Pall-y-ohx-sis) I told her not to go, even though we were starving.

Palioxis Is a very dangerous planet, on a meteor belt, though it’s inhabited by peaceful creatures, in the plenty, and we were desperate. So hungry, that’s all I can remember, my sister crouching down, her hand on my shoulder, telling me she’s going to go and get food, that we’re gonna be okay. Then she flies off, her lime green scaly wings flattering and then vanishing. I’d been alone ever since. Skyborn mothers sacrifice their wings to have children; they use the feathers or scales or skin to create a nest for a small egg, which grows, and hatches.

A Skyborn mother will usually kill themselves after their child has hatched, with no wings, they cannot fly. If they cannot fly they have no life up among the Liakorth. My sister and I weren’t even technically sisters. My mother and her mother were very close and when she was born, my mother swore to protect her, but then when I was born she told her to protect me. She did. I miss her. So much.

A tear fell down my cheek, the air whipped my golden hair and the tear left with the cool breeze. I was still falling. Still waiting.

“Hope Skyborn, That’s all you needed.” The woman’s words rang through my brain and I closed my eyes tight, to stop myself from crying. Hope is far away now, I thought.

I was nearing a building now, I was very close, I instinctively tried to flap my wings. Nothing.

I was going to die.

There was no way out.
