31. For Mirella

For Mirella

Ah, New Year’s Eve… I thought to myself as I walked down the street to my small flat.  I really didn’t like the Christmas season…being single and all.  December was just a time to not get kissed under the mistletoe and not get kissed at a New Year’s party.  I shoved my hands further in my pockets and hunched my shoulders in the wind.  I finally got onto my street, hurrying into the small drugstore near my flat.  The little bell over the door jingled as I walked in, and I quickly grabbed a few microwavable dinners and a bottle of fizzy (AN: I am so proud of myself…that’s the British word for soda! I’m so smart… Back to the story…). I set the boxes and the bottle on the counter and dug around in my pocket for a minute, trying to find my cash.  I heard the bell jingle again, and then smelled a sort of cologne behind me. Gosh, that smells good.  Setting my money down on the counter, I glanced over my shoulder at one of the cutest boys I had seen in a long time.  He had curly brown hair and emerald eyes that shone in the light.  He grinned at me, revealing the cutest dimples, and I blushed, turning around again.  I quickly paid for my things and hurried out of the store.  I didn’t see the stray cat that was walking in front of me until I tripped over it, landing on the ground.  I grunted as I felt a pain in my hand.  “Whoa, there!”  I felt hands gently pull me up to a sitting position.  “Are you okay?” I looked up and met the eyes of the boy from before.  He grabbed my bottle of fizzy that was rolling away and set it next to me.  “Oh, that doesn’t look good.” He said, looking at my hand.  He took it in his, and examined it. “I’m Harry.” He said, glancing up at me again.

“Mirella.” I winced as he pressed down on my wrist.

“Well, Mirella, nice to meet you.” He grinned at me. “Wish it was under better circumstances.”

“Yeah, well, I’m a klutz, so…” I shrugged and giggled.  Harry smirked again, and helped me up.

“I’m going to walk you home.” He said decisively. “Cant have you falling again.”

“Um, my flat is right there.” I pointed. Harry gasped.

“You mean a pretty girl like you is all alone on New Year’s Eve?” I blushed as he called me pretty.

“Yup. I’m not much for the party scene.”

“You're walking home pretty late.” Harry said as we slowly walked to my flat.

“I got out of work late.” I shrugged.

“You know it’s nearly midnight.” We could hear the faint cheering from a couple of blocks downtown, where the ball was being dropped.  I sighed. FIVE! FOUR! THREE! TWO! ONE! HAPPY NEW YEAR! We could hear the roar of the crowd as 2013 disappeared and 2014 came in.  I smiled at Harry.

“Happy new year, Harry.” I said, giggling.

“Happy new year, Mirella.” He grinned down at me.  “You know, I think I’m supposed to kiss you now.  You know, for good luck?” I laughed again.

“I think that we should know a little more about each other than our first names and the fact that I’m a klutz.”

“So does that mean that you're going to give me your number?” Harry winked at me, and I smiled.

“If you ask nicely.”
