2. Chapter 1

I woke up to the stillness like every single day. I simply got out of bed and searched for the light in the pitch blackness. I opened the blinds and light almost blinded my eyes. I yawned and stretched and quickly pulled on my jeans, and black shirt. I didn't bother to brush my hair, because it would bounce right back up. After getting dressed, I walked to the kitchen.

Instead of opening all the blinds in the house like I usually do, dad was fixing breakfast in our small kitchen. That was strange. I never saw dad in the kitchen. Never.

"Dad?" I asked, not believing what I saw.

"Hey, sleepy head, I'm fixing pancakes..." my dad said, almost too perkily.

"What- what are you doing up?" I asked, astonished.

"Why are you so surprised? I'm fixing breakfast for my baby on her first day of high school!" Dad said, trying to flip the pancakes, but he failed.

Did I forget to mention today was my first day of high school? After a dark, lonely summer, I'm going to my first day of high school, which isn't that much better. But it's something to do, even though everyone laughs at me and says I'm little miss freak, just because I don't wear colorful dresses, and talk about boys all the time. I usually keep to myself. Also, did I mention today was my birthday? Well, it is. 16.

"And Happy Birthday, Poppet!" my dad said.

"Thanks, dad..." I said awkwardly, still not understanding everything. I sat down at the table and grabbed a piece of toast. My dad layed my plate on the table and sat down beside me. He stared at my food as I sat there munching on my toast.

"Dad, aren't you gonna get something to eat?" I asked.

"I'm good..." Dad said, still staring at my food. Everything grew quiet, then he asked, "Have you still been seeing things?"

I nodded, food in my mouth.

"Well, you know, today's a special day..." my dad said awkwardly looked at the clock.

"Not really..." I said, thinking of today as every other day.

"You are probably going to hear from your uncles today, you know," Dad said, still watching the hands on the clock tick by.

"Finally!" I mumbled under my breath. We never speak to my uncles and I miss them. Even though they all have that darkness about them like my dad, Uncle Louis always makes me laugh. The last time I saw them was on my 10th birthday. That's five years!

"Ok..." I said, looking down.

"Baby, you know I love you, right?" Dad asked, quickly.

"Of course!" I said, because I do love my dad.

"I know I'm not the best father, but today--" dad broke off as a he heard a loud knock at the door.

I turned my head, staring at the grey door. Before I could get up, dad gently pulled me back down.

"No..." he said, shaking his head, almost mesmerized by the boring door. He looked strangely alarmed.

Another knock came soon after, a little bit louder.

"Dad!" I yelled, trying to squeeze out of his reach.

"Shhh!" he yelled, holding on tighter. After silence, his eyes widened.

I could feel darkness in the air.

"Camille, I want you to go to your room and lock the door," Dad whispered seriously to me.

"But--" I whined, before dad quickly shushed me again. "Camille, don't argue!" he said, his eyes growing darker as he looked at me.

Before I could get out of my seat, the door was slammed open. A large figure stomped in and asked in a deep, scratchy voice, "Where's Camille?"

I quickly straightened up in fright. Finally, I could see his face. Red, bulging eyes with little fangs sticking out his mouth. His jaw twitched. His huge boots stomped more in the room, and I tried to run but couldn't seem to move my feet.

Dad stepped up. "Go away now, Shadow Keeper!" he yelled.

Shadow Keeper?

"I want Camille!" Shadow Keeper's voice boomed throughout our small apartment. All of a sudden, people started running into the room. People with red eyes and fangs piling in.

I stood there, my feet frozen in position. Then I saw something horrifying. Something terrible.

My dad's eyes grew bloodshot red, just like all the others. His facial expression changed, and I saw him lunge at the people, biting into their neck.

I finally was able to run. I ran not only because I was frightened by the creatures, but by my dad.

I ran to my room, and slammed the door. I looked for a place to hide, and crawled under my bed. I sat there in dead silence and listened to the shrieks outside. Hot tears poured down my eyes, and my head was clouded with thoughts. I've never been so frightened.

Was my dad- No, he can't be! Everything began to make sense. Those people out there were vampires! And my dad was one of them...

My thought were interrupted as the door swung open and boots walked close to me. I closed my eyes and tried to keep my breathing under control, even I was terrified inside.

"There's nothing here!" someone yelled.

The boots walked out of the room.

I took a deep breath, and opened my eyes. Right before huge hands grabbed my feet and pulled me out.
