When We Run

Your life can change in a heartbeat.
I walked downstairs and when I came back, everyone was dead and everything was over. But I survived and I ran.

9. 9.

Evan's point of view.

Holly wakes up after a while, but I don't acknowledge her. I just keep reading my book. If I'm being honest with myself, then I know that all I want to do is go and say hello to her, see how she is feeling, sort her ribs out and make sure she's not in pain. I just have the biggest urge to just have her in my arms, because if she's there then she's not in any danger and of course, she's not in Sam's arms.

"Hey." she says to Sam, stretching. She winces when she realises what she's done to her ribs and I just want to go over and fix it, but I can't.

"You okay?" Sam chuckles at her. I know that chuckle because I have wanted to do it so many times. I don't know, there's just something that is so endearing about her doing stupid things sometimes.

"Fine." she laughs, pushing herself up and going to get some water. She chucks Sam a bottle of water and then glances at me. "Want one?"

I nod, holding my hands up. She gives a hint of a smile and throws it. Not to me; at me. And hard. But she is laughing and I can't help but laugh a bit too. I manage to catch it, unscrewing the lid and taking a drink casually.

"Not bad." she grins and comes and sits next to me, taking my book away and looking at the cover. She glances back at me. "Lord of the Rings fan, hey?"

I laugh, brushing my hand across my face, a bit embarrassed, but I don't know why. "Uh, yeah. Childhood thing that just stuck."

She grins. "No, I love this series. Favourite book?"

"Favourite book? Fellowship of the Ring-"

"You're kidding!" she protests. "No, no, no, Return of the King is the best book of all time, let alone just the series."

I laugh, disagreeing. "No way. Return of the King is the best movie, but not the best book."

She shakes her head, smiling. I can't even put up walls right now. I glance over at Sam who has my headphones on, listening to some music.

"Hey, do you wanna go walk for a minute?" I ask.

To my relief, she nods and we walk up the stairs, outside.
